Diana Raylyanu Larry Neuburger Eng 102-102 31 January 2012 Essay Response On Dumpster Diving On Dumpster Diving is a short

essay written by Lars Eighner detailing Eighners experience as a Dumpster diver or scavenger. Even though Eighner survives on others trash, his contentment arises from knowing what he wants, not from what he has. Most scavengers begin their diving careers filled with self-disgust and loathing, but as they gain more experience, scavengers come to realize that one mans trash is another mans treasure. At this point, many become obsessed with acquiring everything they touch. But easily acquired things are just as easily lost. Eighner writes Many times in our travels I have lost everything but the clothes I was wearing and Lizbeth. Lizbeth was his dog and valued companion. He ends the essay stating that he feels sorry for the rat-race millions who nightly scavenge the cable channels looking for they know not what. The rat-race millions have everything they think they want, and they are still not satisfied. Eighner may have only had the clothes on his back and Lizbeth at times, but he knew what he was looking for. (182)
