ED PS 6750 ISTE Standards Identified Bobbi Kassel and Shalece Nuttall After looking at the ISTE standards online

at http://www.iste.org/standards.aspx we found a few standards that align with our project of an online orientation for new and transfer students to the Criminal Justice Department at Utah Valley University. Listed below are the ISTE standards from the three levels: Student, Teachers, and Administrators. NETS for Student: http://www.iste.org/standards/nets-for-students/nets-student-standards-2007.aspx 6. Technology Operations and Concepts Students demonstrate a sound understanding of technology concepts, systems, and operations. Students: b. Select and use applications effectively and productively Students will be introduced to specific applications that they will use throughout their education at UVU. After reviewing the orientation, they will be able to select and use the applications effectively. d. Transfer current knowledge to learning of new technologies One of the goals of the online orientation is to expose students to the online applications that they will be using throughout their education at Utah Valley University. Students will watch a video of an advisor navigating through UVLINK, using the Wolverine Track audit system, registration system, and waitlist programs. Once students have observed this, they will be able to transfer the knowledge of the new technology to their own education. NETS for Teacher: http://www.iste.org/standards/nets-for-teachers/nets-for-teachers-2008.aspx 1. Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-toface and virtual environments. Teachers: d. Model collaborative knowledge construction by engaging in learning with students, colleagues, and others in face-to-face and virtual environments. Students will be required to complete the online orientation prior to meeting with their academic advisor. The student will be exposed to the advisor through the orientation, and will personally meet with the advisor for a more personalized, seamless, and intentional advising session. During this personal appointment with the student, the advisor is able to engage with the student about their educational and career goals, instead of focusing on the information that was covered in the orientation. 2. Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments

Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessment incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the NETS S. Teachers: b. Develop technology-enriched learning environments that enable all students to pursue their individual curiosities and become active participants in setting their own educational goals, managing their own learning, and assessing their own progress. Once the orientation has been viewed by the student, and after meeting with the academic advisor, the student will see the potential use of the online applications through UVLINK and will also be able to set their own educational goals and assess their progress towards accomplishing those goals. 3. Model Digital-Age Work and Learning Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in global and digital society. Teachers: b. Collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community members using digital tools and resources to support student success and innovation. Student success is very important to an advisor. We want to ensure that students will meet with their advisor already knowing college terminology, how to locate resources, and use the various tools within UVLINK. The advisor can then work one-on-one with the student to foster their education success. c. Communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital-age media and formats. The purpose of the online orientation was to give new or transfer students interested in the Criminal Justice program at Utah Valley University the opportunity to learn about program and college requirements, resources, and tools that will help them succeed as a student. Students can share this information to their parents and peers, and the advisor can share it with their peers. The information covered in the online orientation will include a variety of media and formats. d. Model and facilitate effective use of current and emerging digital tools to locate, analyze, evaluate, and use information resources to support research and learning. The online orientation will include the process of locating the Wolverine Track Audit, Registration, and Waitlist tools, and enable the student to analyze and evaluate their current course requirements and which courses to register for. Educational Administrators inspire and lead development and implementation of a shared vision for comprehensive integration of technology to promote excellence and support transformation throughout the organization. Educational Administrators: a. Inspire and facilitate among all stakeholders a shared vision of purposeful change that maximizes use of digital-age resources to meet and exceed learning goals, support effective instructional practice, and maximize performance of district and school leaders. Our clients, administrators at UVU, are in strong support of the online orientation. They share with us the vision of student success, and realize that students today succeed with the digital-age technology. By having an online orientation where students receive the basic information that would be given during the initial advisor appointment, advisors can now focus on the individual student use the best practice of Personalized, Seamless, and Intentional advising. 2. Digital Age Learning Culture Educational Administrators create, promote, and sustain a dynamic, digital-age learning culture that provides a rigorous, relevant, and engaging education for all students. Educational Administrators: c. Provide learner-centered environments equipped with technology and learning resources to meet the individual, diverse needs of all users. Since the orientation is housed through CANVAS found in UVLINK, students will have the option of referring to the information throughout their educational experience at UVU. The online orientation will meet both the individual and diverse needs of all users.
