The entire nation celebrated when the central government declared River
Ganga a national river. Had Prof. B. Katle been alive today then he would have
been extremely happy on hearing this news. Military engineer Katle working
under British government had fought at the highest level to declare Ganga River
as a national river and Ganga canal as a national canal. However, his mission
could not be completed. But now Save Ganga Forum and people from various
walks of life are completing that mission.
Prof. B. Katle had immense faith on Ganga River. During 1840 famine in
north India, the British government had given him the responsibility of building a
water source. At that time he had tried to see Ganga with a religious viewpoint.
It is said that Prof. Katle had called Ganga as a symbol of faith after completing
the task of construction of Ganga canal.
He had begun his efforts to get Ganga declared as a national heritage from
that time onwards. He had also presented the technical basis for this in front of
British government. Katle was called to British senate then he had said that
Ganga is not an ordinary river, therefore every tributary of Ganga is actually a
flow of faith for all the countrymen. It is noteworthy that Prof. Katle had trav-
eled on horse from Bheemgoda Barrage to Neelkantha Mahadev at the time of
construction of Bheemgoda Barrage. He had seen Ganga quite closely till
Gangotri. The retired engineers of irrigation department say that this is the rea-
son that Bhagirathi and Bhilangana rivers are also clearly described in Katle
Atlas. They said that India can never be poor because there are rivers like
Bhagirathi, Bhilangana, Alaknanda, which are associated with peoples faith. It
is not just water that is flowing in these rivers, but it is the flow of prosperity,
progress.
The scientists claim that the bacteria present in Ganga are helpful for it.
They keep the river clean. They make it pollution free and also eat away the
harmful bacteria. Its water is unmatchable. Ganga cannot be compared with
any other river. The Ganga water never gets decomposed. It contains iron in
abundant quantity, which is not present in other rivers. This has been found out
through scientific research.
Scientific research began with the initiative of Ministry of Science and Tech-
nology. IIT Kanpur began the investigation. Prof. Vinod Tare of civil engineer-
ing department said that soil samples were collected from the banks of Ganga
river. It was tested in core lab. Five types of bacteria were found in soil and
core, which are beneficial for Ganga. On the other hand, Prof. Rajiv Sinha told
that according to the facts mentioned in ancient texts, Saraswati river had disap-
peared six thousand years back. The history of Yamuna is two thousand years
old. Ganga is flowing from the last 30 thousand years. Core and sand samples
were collected from a depth of 50 feet with the help of pipe. Different types of

tests were done to find temperature, magnetic and multi
proxy approach.
This was the basis of finding the age of river Ganga.
Research is also going on to find out its longevity. Prof.
R.Raghunath of chemistry department is also involved
in this work. Unique bacteria were found out with his
help. The movement of bacteria is being observed along
with the methods to find their names. These bacteria
help in cleaning the river.
The history of revolutions for Ganga is around 100
years old. Pt. Madan Mohan Malaviya had started this
revolution in the beginning of 20
th
century and finally
won it in 1916. But subsequent revolutions were
directionless and solution less. If we talk about the past
100 years then Ganga faced the first danger in 1905.
Malviya was involved in the establishment of Hindu
University. Meanwhile Babu Shivprasad Gupta shared
the information related to the plan of British to con-
struct a dam on Ganga river. Afterwards they joined
hands and contacted the kings of small provinces. 11-
year-old struggle proved to be successful.
There were no transport sources in 1916. New tech-
niques were not developed. Hundreds and thousands
of Hindu kings gathered in a meeting at Hardwar. As a
result, British had to bow down. The British decided to
let the Ganga flow like a perennial source of water.
Then the revolution came to an end. Lakshmi Narayan
Rao and then UP Chief Minister Dr. Sampoornand Ji
led the mission of beautification of Ganga banks after
independence. They established a Kashi Ganga bank
development committee.
It is said that everything bows down in front of faith
in India. The government finally realized after two and
half decades and an expenditure of two thousand crore
rupees that Ganga should be declared a national river
and give it a new life. The Ganga Action Plan was started
in 1985. It was believed that the first phase would be
completed over a period of six to seven years. But noth-
ing special happened. The work proposed for 1990 could
not be completed even till 2004. This point was raised
in the report of public accounts committee report of
parliament. CAG and the apex court did come down
heavily on concerned authorities and state governments
from time to time.
The second phase of Ganga Action Plan was started
before the completion of first phase. The purification of
Yamuna, Gomati and Damodar rivers also started along
with Ganga. The objective was to complete the second
phase by 2000, but it will take more time to complete it.
The dream of Clean India is baseless unless Ganga
is clean. Swami Ramdevs statements made on Sep-
tember 18
th
at Kanpur worked like magic. The Save
Ganga Forum under the leadership of Patanjali Yogpeeth
proceeded. Eminent people from different social orga-
nizations, saints of pilgrimage centers, members of
Gayatri family took the resolution at Har-ki-Paudi. The
issue gathered heat with invitations, actual work, dis-
cussions etc. and the resolution taken at Har-ki-Paudi
to declare Ganga as a national river finally reached its
historical goal.
Ganga river, the symbol of Indian culture became a
victim of industrial pollution for the last several years.
However, various measures at different levels were
taken by the government to make it pollution free. But
it had no impact. The situation was so critical that the
water was not worth of using even for religious pur-
poses (Achaman etc.) Former Governor of
Uttarakhand, Sudarshan Agarwal participated in the
Ganga Mahotsava at Gangotri, the origin place of Ganga
and was disappointed to see the condition of the river.
He later proposed to start the movement of cleaning
Ganga. The saints of Hardwar organized a rally from
Gangotri to Delhi and expressed their anger against the
government.
Swami Ramdev performed an Abhishek (worship
of Ganga) with milk, turmeric and honey at Sarasaiya
ghat, Kanpur and made the people present at the occa-
sion to take a resolution of Save Ganga. It was said that
construction of dam on river would prevent its free flow
and increase the risk of environmental dangers and pol-
lution. Therefore the demand for declaring Ganga a
national river became stronger. The religious leaders,
social and cultural scholars declared openly at Har-ki-
Paudi that if Ganga is not declared a national river by
2010 then the saints would boycott the Mahakumbha.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called upon the Home
Minister for State Shri Prakash Jaiswal, Swami Ramdev
and chief of Gayatri Pariwar, Dr. Pranav Pandya in
New Delhi and discussed this matter with all serious-
ness. Prime Minister was told about the faith attached
with Ganga and the demands of saints.
Central government declared Ganga as national river.

This decision was taken by a high level meeting pre-
sided over by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. A
decision to set up a Ganga River Basin Authority was
also taken in this meeting. This authority would prepare
its plan for making the Ganga pollution free and their
effective implementation.
The Prime Minister said that Ganga is residing in
the heart and mind of every Indian. Therefore it is nec-
essary to take strong and effective measures to keep
Ganga clean and pure. Dr. Manmohan Singh will be the
president of this authority. The chief ministers of the
states through which Ganga flows will be its members.
Ganga Action Plans are being implemented since
1985. In spite of spending several crores of rupees the
report says about the water of Ganges that its water is
not worth taking bath also at several places.
The plans of different ministries, agencies working
for purification of Ganga will now be under the scanner
of this authority. There is possibility to bring the various
campaigns, sewage treatments, industrial wastes and
other programs being carried on in villages and cities
around Ganga river also under this authority. This work
will be given final shape in the next two months. Yog
guru Swami Ramdev Ji Maharaj expressed his happi-
ness on the step taken by the central government along
with Dr. Pranav Pandya that this was the victory of the
peaceful revolution made in this direction. Swami
Ramdev said at Har-ki-Paudi in the presence of thou-
sands of people that the government has done its task
and now it is the duty of the citizens to keep the Ganga
clean, pure and pollution free.
People of Hardwar celebrated as soon as they heard
the news of declaring Ganga a national heritage. A spe-
cial Aarti was conducted at Har-Ki-Paudi. Dr. Pranav
Pandya along with various communities, saints of
ashrams, officers of social and political organizations
and devotees of Ganga were present at this occasion.
Swami Ramdev, founder of Save Ganga Forum and
other members of Patanjali Yogpeeth reached Har-ki-
Paudi to participate in this occasion.
Swami Ji addressed thousands of Ganga devotees
present there and said that Save Ganga Forum was
established just last month and people of various spiri-
tual, cultural and social organizations from across the
country had associated with it. The movement was
started from Kanpur. Signature campaigns from 550
districts of India were sent to the Prime Minister and
President. This is the result of this peaceful demonstra-
tion that the government agreed to their demand within
two months.
He thanked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and
said that he kept the promise he had made to the del-
egates of Save Ganga Forum. He also thanked the
members of VHP, RSS, Shantikunj, Ganga forum, all
India Akhada Parishad, All India Saint Committee, saint
Morari Bapu, Ramesh bhai Ojha and other organiza-
tions for their selfless contribution.
He said that today a historical decision has been
taken with respect to Ganga. This day has a special
importance in our history. Ganga is polluted up to 99
percent at almost all the places, now polluting Ganga
would be a cognizable offence as per the governments
decision. The perennial, pure flow of Ganga will be easily
available for everybody. He said that the government
has also set up a national Ganga Authority along with
this declaration. Prime Minister would be the president
of this authority. He said that the government has done
its work and now it is our turn to contribute in maintain-
ing it.
Swami Ji is organizing special training programs for
Yog volunteers. The decision of Prime Minister
Manmohan Singh to declare Ganga as national river
has been seen as a great decision. Swami Ramdev Ji
Maharaj said in this regard that a reform cannot be
completed by just making acts. There is a need for so-
cial awareness. He said that Prime Minister is himself
the president of this authority therefore there are no
chances of any loopholes in the work of saving Ganga.
However public awareness is very necessary.
Swami Ji said that the revolution of Save Ganga
Forum has not ended, but its form has changed. Now it
will start campaigns against anti-social elements, which
are polluting Ganga. Swami Ji believes that polluting
Ganga is a serious punishable offence. The public would
have to watch such people and make sure that they are
punished. The Indians having faith towards Ganga would
have to be responsible and maintain its sanctity just like
worship of God. Committees of devotees would be made
at all the banks of Ganga. He also said that the workers
of Patanjali Yogpeeth would be made alert in this re-
spect.

BREAST CANCER CURED WITH
PRANAYAM
Respected Swami Ramdev Ji
Maharaj!
Namaste!
Breast cancer was detected in
May 2006. I was given normal medi-
cines and chemotherapy. Chemo-
therapy has many sides effects. I
watched your pranayam on Astha
channel. I started practicing
pranayam for one to one and half
hours daily, which mainly included
Kapalbhati and Anulom-Vilom. I am
a doctor and I could easily notice the
presence of oxygen in the body. The
cancer cells do not take the oxygen.
While practicing pranayam I could
feel whether the oxygen has entered
the lungs or the arteries or veins. I
could also feel that Kapalbhati has
massaged my internal organs and is
successful in removing the poison
from the body. I felt that the trouble
has arisen and I have to overcome
it. I should have the strength and
self-confidence to overcome it. This
was possible only because of your
Yog revolution. Now it is one and
half years since I have been diag-
nosed cancer. I am continuously
practicing pranayam. You have
dreamt of making India free from
diseases in the same way I have
dreamt of freeing women from this
cancer. Chemotherapy is one of the
methods of recovery but it has side
effects. Pranayam is a life giver and
does not have any side effects. If it
is diagnosed in the initial stage then
it is curable.
I thank you from the bottom of
my heart; you have taught me an
easy, natural and inexpensive way,
which is a combination of bliss and
blessings.

PRANAYAM RELIEVES
MANY DISEASES
Respected Sri Swamiji Maharaj
Namaste!
Five years back one of my
friends told me that if Swami
Ramdev Babas yog is practiced
then it is possible to relieve several
diseases related to the human body.
But I did not pay much attention to-
wards his words at that time. I suf-
fered from many diseases like fat
tummy, constipation urinary prob-
lems, cold etc. Every month I used
to take treatment for the same. My
father also suffered from chronic
common cold. He was not able to
hear properly, and his appetite also
reduced. He used to get angry and
used to get irritated for simple things.
One day I watched your program
on television. I liked the program and
thought of practicing yog regularly.
The next day, April 15
th
2006, I prac-
ticed Yog watching television. I prac-
tice Yog and asanas for one and half
hours and regularly watched your
program from 8 to 9 p.m. Now I am
free from all diseases and I have got
a new life.

MAGIC OF PRANAYAM, DEAF
WAS ABLE TO HEAR
Respected Swamiji Maharaj
Namaste!
Swamiji, I was not able to hear
properly from past 6-7 years, the
doctor did my audiograph on 05-
01.2001 and said that I have to use
hearing aid. I could not buy the ma-
chine due to some reasons. I started
practicing pranayam and other ex-
ercises slowly. Since 5 years I have
been practicing pranayam and
asanas for one hour daily and now
I am able to see the difference. On
10-09-2008 Dr. Rajesh Rane called
me for the audiograph and after ex-
amining the ear he said that both my
ears are perfectly fine and I need
not use the machine in future. The
doctor was surprised and asked me
how it could be possible. I then told
him that I was practicing pranayam
and asana, especially Brahmari
pranayam, the doctor recom-
mended to continue the same in fu-
ture.

Menopause is not a disease. The menstrual cycle
becomes irregular when a woman reaches 45 48 years
of age and she suffers from various health problems.
Many women suffer from different health problems
before menopause. It is not necessary that all women
have the same symptoms like other women. Some
women might suffer from some problems while others
could have some different complaints. Changes occur
in womans face, head and neck region. She experi-
ences heat in these areas and perspires more. Reddish-
ness is observed all over the body. The woman usually
complains of headache, giddiness, vomiting, restlessness,
sleeplessness, loss of appetite, indigestion, irritation,
anger, fear are usually observed. Many women com-
plain of high blood pressure, suspicious nature and mental
instability.
Few women complain of inflammation of uterus and
excess bleeding. This occurs before menopause. Ar-
thritis, obesity, low back pain, partial headache are also
observed. The woman feels unhappy, depressed and
heart beat increases, woman gets hot flashes. Some-
times there is shivering and skin diseases occur due to
blood impurities.
Why this development takes place?
The production of estrogen hormone stops with in-
crease in age. The mood swings takes place during
menopause due to the imbalance of hormones. she un-
dergoes many physical, mental and sex related prob-
lems.
Menopause is a natural process. It is a beginning of
a new life. Woman should take it as a normal phenom-
enon and try to be happy.
Depression during menopause
Depression during menopause is due to low produc-
tion of estrogen. There are some social reasons also.
Woman feels lonely when the children grow up and
become busy in their career. Woman who was busy all
these days gets free time and she becomes unhappy.
Some women like to sleep always or some even have
suicidal tendencies.
Women who tend to get depression should always
keep themselves busy.
They should go to temple, mosque, Gurudwara or
go for walks. They should take balanced diet or take
soybean or calcium in more quantity.
Irregularity in Menopause
If menstrual cycle has stopped before the normal
age then it is a bad sign. Excess bleeding, bleeding for
several days or menopause occurring much earlier is
also a matter of concern. If the menstrual cycle has
started at the age of 14 years, add 32 years to it. That
means it should go on till 14 + 32 = 46 yrs. If there is
irregularity, it stops before time or it is excess or mild
and then following measures have to be taken
Medicinal treatment
If a woman loses interest in work, her behaviour
becomes irritable then it can be assumed that it is
due to irregularity in menstrual cycle. One has to
understand that she is not getting adequate calcium
in food. Consume food products rich in calcium or
even calcium tablets.
Women should consume easily digestible, fresh and
little quantity food, which is rich in nutritional value.
If the woman has blood loss then let her take food
products, which increase bloodlike clarified butter,
butter that is necessary to increase blood.
Take equal quantities of Suhaga, asafetida, heera
kasis, and musabbar, grind it and add it in gheekvar.
Make 120 gm of tablets. Take one to two tablets
with hot water daily.
Hingashtak powder is good for any problem in men-
strual cycle. Take it with hot water before 4 5
days twice daily.
Equal quantities of roots of black sesame, roots of
cotton, bark of drum stick, brahmadandi roots,
Moolhati, dry ginger, round chilly, Pippali. Grind it
and sieve it with fine cloth. Take 2 3 gm of this
powder with old jaggery 2 -3 times with hot water.

Query What is the form of contemplation?
rr-fr-rt rtrr +
Word meaning: Deshbandha chittasya focusing
the mind on a particular place; dharna is known as
contemplation.
Meaning: Focusing the mind on any thing internal
or external to the body is known as contemplation.
Contemplation is focusing (stopping) the mind on a
particular place. The place could be either internal or
external to the body. The places inside the body could
be navel area, Agya chakra, heart, tip of the tongue, tip
of the nose etc. and the places outside the body could
be a flower, a picture, sky, moon, star, the sound of a
flowing river etc.
All the devotees should remember that the eight
branches of Yog have a sequence, wherein the first
branches prove helpful for the other branches. If the
first branches are not completed properly then the other
branches are not carried on properly. This point is very
valid with respect to contemplation because it is the
preliminary stage of the internal Yog. Till such time that
the stage of restraining sense organs is not achieved
contemplation cannot be achieved. Therefore the
practitioners should restrain the sense organs before
practicing contemplation.
As far as the procedure of practice of contemplation
is concerned, there is no special secret. After achieving
the stage of restraining sense organs, the practitioner
should be free from any feeling or imagination and try
to focus his or her attention on the desired object.
Regular practice will show that the mind is focused on
that particular place or thing and is totally free of
blockages. This is the stage of contemplation. In this
stage, the practitioner experiences difference between
himself, subject of contemplation and procedure of
contemplation.
Query What is the form of meditation?

Meaning: The continuity of senses in the place
where the mind has been focused is known as meditation.
Once the mind gets focused on the place of meditation
and when a sort of stability is achieved in that position
then it is known as meditation. We can understand this
position in another way as has been mentioned at the
end of the previous verse that the contemplator
experiences the difference between himself, the subject
of contemplation and the procedure of contemplation.
When this stage matures then the contemplator does
not have the experience of the procedure of
contemplation. He or she only has the experience of
himself and the subject of contemplation. This stage is
known as meditation. In literal sense the person
contemplating is known as contemplator and the subject
of contemplation is known as the objective.

Meaning: We can understand the meaning of deep
meditation in simple and easy manner like this it is the
matured form of meditation. In other words the stage
of deep contemplation on a particular thing is known as
deep meditation. In other words we can also say that it
is the highest stage of meditation. In this stage, the
contemplator experiences only the subject or object of
contemplation and forgets his own existence.

A patient of epilepsy is always afraid and is very
weak internally. When the patient suffers from any head
injury and loses the brain loses control on the nervous
system, which causes mental imbalance, faints and stiff-
ness. This condition of the body is known as epilepsy.
The patient comes to know about the attack of epi-
lepsy before it actually happens but many times it is
sudden and the patient falls down due to this disease.
The muscles become stiff, and the body becomes
pale. The patient experiences severe pull in the whole
body for around one minute. The patient rotates pupils
like lunatic patient and bites teeth. Many times he bites
his tongue also and urinates. This condition continues
for some time and the patient comes back to conscious-
ness and goes to sleep. Some people suffer from this
attack several times in a day while some once or twice
in a month or year. This is hereditary in nature and passes
from parents to children. If the menstrual cycle stops
suddenly in women then they could suffer from this prob-
lem. Sometimes it could be due to worms in the intes-
tines.
Nature cure
It is necessary to clean the stomach and maintain
the digestion process in order to strengthen the ner-
vous system. This is the correct treatment for this
disease. Medicines cannot cure this problem com-
pletely. Nature cure and yog can only cure it.
Take enema regularly, drink lukewarm lemon water
with honey, hot and cold fomentation on stomach,
mud bandage on stomach, hot and cold fomentation
for 15 minutes on back, and lie down on stomach for
rest.
Sunbath and oil massage on body should be done
twice or thrice in a week. As soon as there is feeling
that an attack can take place, the patient should keep
cold towel on head. He should lie down on the bed
and pour bucketful hot water on his legs. Cold wa-
ter in small quantities should be taken after this to
reduce the chances of attack or stop it completely.
When the patient becomes normal after attack then
wash his head with cold water and give sponge bath
with cold water.
Yogic cure
Practice Surya Namaskar, Vajrasana, Ushtrasana,
Suptavajrasana, Bhujangasana, Halasana,
Hastpadotasana, Makarasana and Matsyasana regu-
larly.
Shitali, Sitkari and Nadi shodhan pranayam are ben-
eficial. Increase the practice of internal Kumbhak
in Nadi shodhan. It will strengthen the nervous sys-
tem and it will be beneficial for the patient of epi-
lepsy.
Regular practice of Shavasana for ten minutes is
beneficial. It relaxes the body and mind.
Diet regimen
Diet and regimen is also important along with nature
and yogic cure.
Juice made with raw vegetables, salad, sprouts should
be taken with salt. Take milk, fruits, raisins and dry
raisins.
Take only vegetable juice in the first week, fruit juice
4-6 times and 40 raisins, 10-12 dry raisins, one fig
twice daily. Take milk twice or thrice for two to three
weeks and sprouts for two week once or twice daily.
Take sprouts and raisin mixed milk for breakfast,
light lunch, fruits and milk for dinner. Take vegetable
or fruit juice in between in case of hunger.

one species of a tree, which is older than dinosaur, is
present today also. Jingo Bailova tree belonging to
this rare species can be seen in Kashmir but it is now
on the edge of extinction. It is known as Chini Darkhta
in local language.
This tree is useful in maintaining the soil fertility
and also in the manufacture of cosmetics. It is found
in Japan, America and Europe. Jingo Bailova found
in the Lalmandi area of Kashmir is the oldest tree of
south Asia. This tree would also have died had flori-
culture development extension officer Fida Ali
Alamgir would not have seen this tree. The tree was
completely dry when he saw this. Now it has new
leaves and other trees are being planted with its
branches.
Fida Ali says that this tree does not belong to any
category of trees available on earth. It has a different
category altogether. This tree grows in cold places.
The average temperature in Kashmir is 17 degrees
with a rainfall of 1100 mm. The soil should also be
acidic in nature. He told that this tree was available
three crore years back also. At that time dinosaurs
were present in the world. This tree had become ex-
tinct in America around 75 lakh years ago and 25
lakh years before in Europe. But the tree was brought
from other places and planted here. China is supposed
to be its house. This tree bears fruits after 40 years
and at the time the gender of the tree is known. Fida
told that male species of the tree are more than fe-
male. Its leaves are very beautiful and appear like
golden leaves when they fall down. The male tree
also bears fruits. He told that jingo trees could be
found in Jalandhar, Ooti and Dehradun. But there are
only one or two and are older than 30 to 40 years.
The diameter of the tree is 1.75 meter, whereas
the diameter of the tree found in Korea is 6.75 meters.
According to Fida Ali when he saw this tree then it
had almost died. Somebody had cut the tree in a wrong
manner. He constructed a mud surrounding and
started its treatment. Now branches are coming out
in the lower part of the tree. This is a male tree. Fida
told that 50 jingo trees were found in the valley after
this. Out of which 30 are female. He told that radio-
active rays have no affect on this tree. Atom bomb
was dropped on Hiroshima in 1945. At that time ev-
erything had destroyed in that place but Jingo sur-
vived even after getting burned.

Chronic diseases can be
avoided if high cholesterol is con-
trolled from a younger age. The in-
creasing rate of obesity, high blood
pressure, and high cholesterol is be-
ing seen in young people.
High cholesterol is a silent killer,
which does not give any indications.
Cholesterol level should be checked
every five years after the age of 20.
Causes of High Cholesterol
Food intake, obesity, lack of
physical work results in cholesterol.
Men have more cholesterol level
when compared to women. Con-
sumption of alcohol also increases
cholesterol. Besides, it could be also
due to hereditary reasons.
Tips to avoid cholesterol
Most of the cholesterol is pro-
duced in the liver and rest comes
through our food. Therefore it is
necessary to avoid fat rich food
that increases cholesterol.
Avoid fried food made from milk
products. Increase intake of fi-
ber rich, as it is good for health.
Consume chapattis made from
whole wheat or other grains. In-
clude cereals, oats, fruits and
vegetables in breakfast. Oats re-
duces cholesterol from fats and
helps in digestion.
Take a walk for half an hour.
Take the staircase instead of lift.
Walk down up to the market in-
stead of using vehicle.
Avoid Vanaspati ghee, which is
the source of Transfats acids, and
is bad for health.
Avoid food products made from
refined flour. It creates imbal-
ance in insulin, and increases cho-
lesterol. It has almost zero fiber
content.
Products made from soy, like
flour, milk help in decreasing the
cholesterol level.
Fruits should be consumed along
with their skin because it contains
nutritious fiber. It does not allow
the cholesterol level to increase.
Coriander, mustard seeds, curry
leaves decreases the cholesterol.
Consumption of ginger also helps
in reducing the cholesterol.
Cholesterol is not the only cause
of heart attack. Infection of ar-
teries cause heart attack. In-
crease of homosistine in blood,
stress and lack of vitamins can
also cause heart attack. The other
reasons for heart attack can be
excess physical strain, stress, air
pollution, smoking, polluted food
products and water. External and
internal stress can also lead to
heart attack.
Food products, which reduce
cholesterol
Groundnuts decrease the choles-
terol level. It contains vitamin A
and E, Folic acid, calcium, mag-
nesium, zinc, iron and fiber in bal-
anced ratio. Regular consump-
tion of groundnuts makes man fit
and healthy, it reduces cholesterol
level. Consumption of groundnuts
and groundnut oil makes man
healthy.
Soybeans also reduce cholesterol.
It also reduces the possibility if
breast cancer. 20-30gms of soy-
beans should be consumed daily
in case of Osteoporosis and pros-
tate cancer. It can be in the form
of milk, flour, curd or ice cream.
How to reduce cholesterol
Avoid fast food and junk food.
Consume double toned milk. Full
cream milk contains saturated
fats, which increases cholesterol.
Fruits, vegetables, Isabgol,
wholegrain, contain fiber. The fi-
ber helps control cholesterol and
avoids constipation.
Standard cooking oil should be
used to prevent cholesterol. Bal-
anced diet contains 30% fats; fats
are of three types saturated,
mono saturated fats and poly
saturated fats. Saturated fats in-
creases the cholesterol level, it
should be consumed in limited
; YOG SANDESH-ENGLISH ; 22
quantity. Unsaturated fats reduce the
cholesterol level. Sunflower, soy-
beans, corn, castor, groundnuts,
mustard and cottonseed oil
should be used alternatively. It is
good for health. Cooking in veg-
etable ghee, pure ghee, butter,
coconut oil and palm oil should
be avoided, as they are full of
saturated fats. Never use hydro-
genated vegetable ghee. It in-
creases cholesterol. Products
can be steamed, baked or grilled
instead of deep fry.
Avoid eating cake, biscuits, past-
ries, sweets, jam, honey, marma-
lade, sweet pickles, chutney,
chocolates, horlicks, bornvita,
tubes beetroot, sweet potato
which are rich in calories. It in-
creases fat on waist and hips
along with cholesterol.
Leafy vegetables, cereals, grains
do not contain cholesterol. Veg-
etarian food is better than non-
vegetarian food. If the food is
taken in balanced quantity with
essential nutrients, vitamins and
minerals then vegetarian food can
be consumed.
Onions, raw vegetables, salad
carrot, radish, tomato, onions, and
cucumber can be consumed for
breakfast. They contain less calo-
ries and essential nutrients. Sa-
vories, biscuits, snacks increase
cholesterol.
Scientifically ginger is a plant that
belongs to alium family. Regular
consumption of ginger decreases
the cholesterol level.
Consumption of 50 gm whole
barley in the form of mash or
chapatti is good for health.
Consumption of niacin controls
the cholesterol made from the
liver.
Exercise is good for physical and
mental health. Exercise de-
creases the L.D.L level. It helps
in functioning of heart and lungs.

Matsyasana, Dhanurasana should be
practiced regularly. Kapalbhati, Nadi
shodhan, Anulom-Vilom pranayam
should be practiced daily.

Acharya Balkrishna
Life is incomplete without liver. In other words, a person cannot live even
for one minute without liver. Liver is situated on the right upper side of the
stomach. This is the biggest organ of the body. It completes the chemical
processes inside the body, which produce necessary elements and enzymes
for the body. It is the place where pitta is produced. Pitta proves helpful in the
absorption of LDE; a dissolvable vitamin present in the fat, this fat is present
in the intestines. Liver has the special quality to inactivate the harmful ele-
ments, toxins and medicines. The liver weighs 1.5 kilo in an adult. Liver also
produces the elements necessary for blood clotting and dissolving. This is the
place where several vitamins are also produced. These vitamins are very
necessary for the body. It also produces blood proteins. Blood cells can also
be produced in liver if necessary. Liver plays an important role in controlling
the blood glucose level. Healthy liver is necessary for healthy body. Liver has
a specialty to protect and maintain its health. Another important point about
liver is that liver can be constructed if the functioning remains 10-20 percent.
Different myths are prevalent with respect to liver. The mothers take their
children to the doctor when the child suffers from loose motions, does not
drink milk, become weak. The baby is under weight due to weakness and
suffers from loose motions. The mother thinks that baby is suffering from
liver disorder. The children generally suffer from the above problems due to
malnutrition and lack of hygiene but not because of liver disorder. Many doc-
tors and quacks misguide them and charge heavy amounts. They give differ-
ent types of tonics and medicines. The child actually requires balanced food
and hygiene instead of tonics and medicines. Similarly when adults suffer
from indigestion, stomachache, loose motions, weight loss then it is considered
to be liver disorder. But this is not the truth. Adults can suffer from the above
problems due to other reasons. A qualified doctor should be consulted if the
above are notice and proper tests should be done for treatment.
It has been mentioned earlier that liver has the quality of protecting itself.
But many times liver becomes diseased due to several reasons. When liver
stops functioning properly then it is known as liver failure. This condition could
be extremely dangerous in the absence of proper treatment. Liver failure
leads to the accumulation of several intoxicants in the body. It has negative
impact on heart, kidneys, and intestines. Jaundice, hepatitis, cirrhosis are the
main diseases affecting the liver. Liver cirrhosis can also occur due to exces-
sive consumption of alcohol, medicines and toxic things.
Reasons:
Excessive consumption of alcohol damages the liver. It increases the risk
The patient should not
do self-medication in
case of liver disease.
However, the medicine
can be taken after
consultation with the
doctor. The myths preva-
lent with respect to liver
failure should be
avoided and try to get
the correct and detailed
information about liver.

of liver cirrhosis. If alcohol con-
sumption is reduced then the risk of
this disease can be reduced. Those
who have weak liver have the risk of
infection. Sometimes fasting also in-
creases the risk of liver damage.
Medicines like morphine etc. harm the
liver cells. The amoeba parasites or
hidetid reach the liver through blood
and turn into cysts. Alcohol consump-
tion causes hepatitis B, virus, fungus
or infection or consumption of con-
taminated food excretes harmful tox-
ins, which increases the risk of cir-
rhosis. Besides this cancer produced in other parts of
the body reaches liver and causes cancer. Hepatitis A,
B, C, D and E spread in our body through virus. Such
diseases are known as viral hepatitis. Hepatitis A and E
diseases occur due to contaminated water, food, and
eatables.
Hepatitis B, C, D diseases occur when the healthy
person comes in contact with diseased person through
blood, infected sperm, and sexual intercourse. This dis-
ease can spread through infected syringes, using infected
tools on the body, ear piercing, nose piercing, tooth ex-
traction, operation, shaving, acupuncture, head shaving,
infected blood transfusion, sexual acts with infected
people and it also passes from infected mothers to ba-
bies.
The person suffering from viral hepatitis complains
of loss of appetite, vomiting, discomfort, mild fever, body
ache, pain in the right upper side of the stomach, bad
taste and jaundice. The eyes and skin becomes yellow
and the colour of the urine also becomes yellow. Hepa-
titis A infection is the most common disease. The people
suffering from this disease recover themselves within a
few weeks or with medication. Hepatitis A infection
can prove dangerous for pregnant women.
This virus spreads gradually in the body and the liver
gets damaged after sometime. This increases the risk
of liver cirrhosis.
In the preliminary stage the behaviour and nature of
the patient changes. They get into
fights and quarrels unnecessarily and
get from the bed and run. The respi-
ration becomes fast and uncontrolled.
There is shivering in hands and legs.
The patient experiences jerks and be-
comes unconscious. The blood is ex-
creted from the intestines and comes
out from the mouth in the form of
blood. Liver cirrhosis is the most criti-
cal disease of the liver that prolongs
for long duration. The liver cells get
damaged and the liver shrinks and
becomes hard. This disease occurs
due to alcohol consumption for long time and hepatitis
B infection. The children suffer from a special type of
liver cirrhosis. If the child is given milk boiled in brass
vessel then it could suffer from this kind of problem.
The brass particles enter the body of the child through
milk and accumulate in the liver. This damages the liver
and the child suffers from cirrhosis.
The cells get damaged in this case and the patient
does not have any specific complaint in the beginning.
The patient complains of loss of appetite, weight loss,
vomiting, weakness and jaundice after some time. This
disease increases gradually. The outcome of this dis-
ease is liver failure. The stomach swells; water gets
accumulated in the stomach, the body swells, and blood
vomiting take place. The faecal matter is black coloured
and sticky. The patient finally dies.
Liver diseases also occur in the body due to exces-
sive consumption of alcohol. The patient suffers from
fatty liver in the initial stage and later suffers from alco-
hol hepatitis. The patient can recover if alcohol con-
sumption is stopped and proper treatment is taken. If
alcohol consumption is not stopped then it results in liver
cirrhosis. This is a very dangerous stage. Women drink
alcohol in little quantities yet can suffer from this prob-
lem.

vere constipation, frequent loose motions, or when the
phlegmatic covering of the rectum becomes inactive
and comes out.
Diagnosis

this is the reason for constipation then regular prac-
tice of Uttanapadasana, Dhanurasana, Chakrasana
and Matsyasana is beneficial. The practice of these
asanas helps in bringing back the navel to the origi-
nal position.

in rectum. He has the urge to urinate frequently.
The patient has to exert lot of pressure during mo-
tions and hence causes bleeding. He loses appetite.
Excess blood loss leads to paleness. The person feels
pressure on anal region.
Piles are a stubborn disease. When the patient ex-
erts pressure the warts also swell, the polluted blood
accumulated in the warts comes out. Frequent in-
take of laxative medicines and sitting on very stiff or
soft surface causes piles.
Eating food quickly without chewing properly and
eating food in noisy place, eating indigestible food
weakens the digestive system. This slows down the
digestive process and finally becomes the cause of
piles.
Natural remedies
Keep fast for two or three days and consume only

etables in sufficient quantity. Do not consume sweets
and spicy food.
Keep mud bandage on stomach and hipbath with
cold water is extremely beneficial.
Soak two dry figs in water. Eat it on empty stomach
every morning. Soak two dry figs in the morning
and consume it at 4 or 5 p.m. do not eat anything
one hour before or after. Consuming this medicine
for around eight to ten days to cure dry and bleeding
piles.
Buttermilk is very beneficial to cure piles perma-
nently and avoid its recurrence. Drink buttermilk with
afternoon meals mixed with one and half gram pow-
dered Ajowan and equal quantity of rock salt for
relief.
Mix camphor in eight times lukewarm castor oil and
prepare the mixture. Clean the warts after bowel
movement and apply this oil gently on the warts to
heal them. This overcomes swelling, pain, burning
sensation, pricking pain and gives relief. Regular use
dries the warts.
In case of severe piles, the patient should take only
curd and kichdi made with rice and Moong dal. A
little bit of clarified butter can be used. Avoid thick
stools and constipation. Avoid consumption of heavy
and spicy food.
Drink diluted curd or buttermilk in case of bleeding
piles. Eat 500 gm fresh ripe papaya two hours after
lunch.
Eat raw radish or drink 25-50 gm radish juice daily
for benefit.
Do not wash the anus with hot water to prevent
piles. During summer season very hot water comes
out of the taps, do not wash the warts with this wa-
ter.
Piles can recur due to indigestion. Therefore it is
necessary to have good food habits to avoid indiges-
tion.
Yogic cure
The patient should clean the stomach while follow-
ing yogic treatment. It is advisable to avoid sitting in
one place for long time. It is beneficial to walk at

Yogrishi Swami
Ramdev went to his
paternal village Sayed
Alipur. The villagers
gave him a warm wel-
come and were thrilled
to see him in the vil-
lage. They garlanded
him and took his bless-
ings, they were very
happy to receive him.
After reaching the
village Swamiji took
the soil of his village
and applied on his
forehead like Tilak as it
was sacred soil. he
talked to his villages
and asked them to unite
and work for the nation.
Swamiji also met his
father and grandfather.
World famous Yog Guru Swamiji Ramdev visited his native place Sayed
Alipur to know the welfare of his village men and mentors who nurtured him
and guided him at different stages. people welcomed him with great spirit and
showered flowers. He took the soil from the ground and applied on his fore-
head like Tilak.
When people crowded to see him, he said everyone has equal rights on
me, but now I have to think about the nation along with you. He also said that
people should never forget their mother, the motherland and the mother insti-
tute (mother is the first school for a child). Man can never come up in his life,
if he does not respect these things.
He addressed the villagers and said that if they want to achieve something
in life then they should have higher aim and have a positive outlook, because
people with negative approach have ruined their families, society and the na-
tion. many diseases occur in the body due to this negative affect.
He said that we should start our work with the blessing of the parents. The
villagers were very happy to welcome him. World famous Yog Guru Swami
Ramdev was born in Sayed Alipur situated 6 km away from Nagal Chaudhary.
He completed his primary education in the village school and his class VIII in
Shahbaj, a near by village. He studied Paninis Asthadhyayi in Sanskrit for one
and half years in a Gurukul situated at Khanpur.
Swamijis grandfather was very happy to see his grandson Ramkishan
(Swamiji childhood name). He tied a turban on Swami Jis head and wel-
comed him. Swamiji touched his feet and took his blessings. Swamiji met his
father Ramnivas and took his blessings.
Swami Ramdev said, The villagers have always complained that I have
done so much for the nation but never worked for development of the village.
He said that he has asked the Chief Minister of the State, Mr.Bhupinder Hudda
to release 50 lakh rupees for the development of Sayed Alipur and has been
approved also. Swamiji asked the villagers to invest the funds for higher edu-
cation.
Recollecting his old memories he said that when he was young he used to
hide and perform yagna because he always had the fear that somebody would
see him. He said that the elders used to scold him that offering pure ghee for
yagna is a wasteful expenditure. He said he went on hunger strike in order to
make his father quit smoking. His father promised to quit smoking but he
smoked the whole night before he finally guilt smoking. He appealed the vil-
lagers to stay away from drugs and other addiction.

Guru Swami Ramdev has being very successful in
lighting the torch of Yog in India and abroad and has
invited the well-established medical institutes of India
to come forward to fight cancer with Yog. He expressed
his views if the medical institutes are ready to treat the
needy with the combination of medicines and Yog then
he would readily contribute in this direction. This could
be useful in curing serious diseases as well.
He said that Yog is completely scientific based and
that there is no disease that cannot be cured with Yog.
It is necessary to know the cause of the
disease. World famous John Hopicks
Cancer Hospital, of America has taken
the initiative to fight cancer with the com-
bination of Yog. Discussions are going
on in this regard. He said that he would
give priority to some leading institute of
our country to carry out the research
work in this matter.
He once again claimed that thou-
sands of patients have been benefited
with Yog in India and abroad. Majority
of the patients were suffering from Re-
contence. Swami Ramdev said that can-
cer and HIV are debatable issues for
doctors and Yog practitioners even to-
day. However, solutions could be found
out if the issues are discussed openly.
Swamiji has claimed that Yog can also
reduce HIV and AIDS. He said that nothing is impos-
sible with Yog. When the AIDS VIRUS C.D 4 count
decreases the immunity of the body decreases and with
regular practice of Yog this count increases. There are
evidences to prove this fact. Therefore this disease can
also be cured with Yog. Maharaj said that a number of
youngsters working in Gurgoan are stressed. Yog is the
only cure to relieve stress. A person can be tension free
with Yog.
Swamiji said that his main aim is the welfare of the
patients. The patient should not be worried in any way
with Yog and Ayurved. Timely treatment at the right
time is utmost important in order to become disease
free. The Arabian countries are also recognizing the
importance of Yog. He said that Cobras poison is also
effective in curing the patients. Therefore Yog should
be treated just as a method of treatment and reach the
stage of deep meditation.
Swamiji also expressed his sorrow on the increasing
rate of corruption. He said that this is a mental disorder
and Yog gives peace of mind and when the mind is
peaceful then there is no question of corruption or crime.
There are two reasons for bad governance prevail-
ing in the society, insecurity and lack of confidence.
The solutions of both these conditions have been de-
scribed in Yog. He claimed that when
the jail inmates were made to practice
Yog regularly then they also developed
positive attitude and started admiring
it.
Union Health Minister Ambumani
Ramdoss said that if Yog and Ayurved
are combined then any serious disease
could be cured. He stressed on the col-
lective use of allopathy and Ayurved to
cure any serious disease. He also said
that Yog is being accepted all over the
world. People in America and other
western countries are showing enthu-
siasm to learn Yog. Yog is becoming
famous at global level. He said that the
Health ministry would join hands with
Swami Ramdev and encourage Yog
mission. Ambumani Ramdoss also said
that he is happy to have begun Yog camps. Yog is fa-
mous all over the world. Our fathers and grandfathers
also performed Yog. Yog can control stress, sugar, blood
pressure and arthritis. Yog is very helpful in curing
chronic diseases. Students should be taught Yog from
school level. One should keep away from diseases in
order to lead a healthy life. It is also necessary to take
precautions along with the practice of Yog. Chewing
tobacco, consumption of junk food, which increases
stress and other diseases, should be avoided. The min-
ister suggested people to keep away from all these.
Health minister said that keeping in view the increasing
trend of Yog the health ministry would work in this di-
rection with the help of Swami Ramdev.
Yog is completely
scientific based and
that there is no
disease that cannot
be cured with Yog.

The new era has entered our lives with all possibilities and opportunities.
The world with a high number of Information Technology companies is also
becoming a world of AIDS. The world is able to reach new heights but the
increasing number of AIDS patients is a matter of concern. AIDS is not merely
a caution of danger but in some countries it has become the synonym for death.
The concern for AIDS has to be part of our daily life and there is an urgent need
to find measures to overcome it.
Discussions in this regard have begun in India before two decades. In spite
of the talks and discussions the general tendency of the people is very casual
and is surrounded by three to four beliefs. They feel that AIDS is a western
disease, which is the result of the openness of their culture. Secondly, it is re-
lated to a specific segment and that married couple leading a normal life need
not worry about it. Thirdly, lack of proper health care facilities.
According to the latest reports of the United Nations AIDS Agency the
number of people suffering from AIDS in India is not less. This epidemic has
spread its roots in countries like South Africa, Burma, Vietnam and other South
Asian countries. The number of people suffering from this deadly disease was
around 83 lakhs until 2005, which includes India also. According to World Health
Organization a large number of people are suffering from AIDS, and are fight-
ing with death.
The possibilities to cure AIDS are being researched and till then patience
is the only cure. There is no cure for HIV and if detected then there is nothing
less dangerous than it. There is no vaccination available to cure AIDS. HIV and
AIDS are the two words, which need description. In brief we can say that being
HIV positive is the initial stage and AIDS is the later stage. AIDS means Ac-
quired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. Acquired means, which comes through a
particular behaviour. Immuno deficiency means weakness of the immunity sys-
tem, which means symptoms of a group of diseases. When the immunity of the
body becomes weak then different diseases attack the body and ultimately lead
to death. The viruses, which carry them, are known as HIV or Humino Defi-
ciency Virus. This virus destroys the immunity of the body.
In spite of the non-availability of the vaccines and possible dangers there is
one positive phase. We have been successful in finding the virus, which is re

Swamiji says that good
conduct and self con-
trol is the only method
to cure AIDS. He says
that it is necessary to
introduce Yog educa-
tion in the schools
instead of sex educa-
tion. Yog develops
tolerance and changes
the attitude. Sexual
relationships with
many people is a sin

Acharya Balkrishan
; YOG SANDESH-ENGLISH ; 34
sponsible for the disease and also the pattern of its
spread, and hence it is possible to save ourselves from
the disease. AIDS spreads from person to person only
by four methods unsafe sexual intercourse, blood
transfusion from a person suffering from HIV, using
the same needle for a healthy person and the infected
person, transfer of HIV from mother to the child, or
getting affected immediately after the birth.
HIV does not spread by shaking hands or touch, or
sharing food, or staying with the person or even kissing
the infected person. There is no doubt that the risk of
AIDS has increased and it is incurable but its preven-
tion is very simple. Firstly, sexual indulgence only with
spouse. Secondly, HIV tests before blood transfusion.
Thirdly, using disposable syringes and fourthly measures
to be taken for HIV affected mother. These are the
precautionary measures and can be put to practice very
easily. If people are not aware of these common mea-
sures then media alone should not be blamed.
This is the age of fast communication and if people
are not getting the required information then the prob-
lem lies somewhere else and is probably related to the
attitude. Today we are facing a big danger in the form
of AIDS and therefore it is necessary to bring in a
change in attitude. Almost 80% of AIDS cases in our
country are due to unsafe sexual relationship.
There is a need to look at the sexually transmitted
diseases from moral values and consider them as dis-
eases. These diseases are the result of a particular type
of behaviour and it has to be accepted. On one hand
the common man should know the common measures
to prevent AIDS and on the other hand it is also neces-
sary for the medical practitioners to become more alert.
The medical institutes and medical practitioners should
realize their responsibilities.
HIV test should be compulsory for blood and other
organs test. The consumers in the medical field should
know their duties and be ready to fight for their rights.
There are easy methods to cure AIDS and prevent its
dangers but careful understanding is necessary in order
to find them. If we start giving easy solutions like com-
pulsory HIV check up then we will move away from
the actual solutions. It is also important for the person
to know the limits of certain things, like when are the
forcible check-ups crossing the limits of the privacy of
a person, and where the social, cultural thinking and
moral values are interfering in sexual relations. When
anything is imposed then there are ways to get out of it
also. But it is also evident that such callousness can
prove to be fatal. In this situation there is no other bet-
ter solution than public awareness.
AIDS and sexual diseases have become very dan-
gerous only because we were rigid in our age old be-
lieves and practices. Now the question is not just of
morality or relevance, now it has become a challenge in
the field of medicine and we have to put up with it. We
have prepare the people mentally forgetting about moral
and ethical values. It can be prevented only by under-
standing and awareness. It is necessary to extend the
message to each and every individual that AIDS is the
result of a particular life style and it is easy to prevent
it. It is challenge in the form of an individual and society
(people suffering from AIDS). Awareness towards
AIDS is its cure.
Patanjali Yogpeeth is carrying clinical trials to cure
AIDS with Yog and Ayurved. Allopathy gives immedi-
ate cure but has side effects. There is no other effec-
tive cure than Yog to fight out this disease. The main
aim of Patanjali Yogpeeth is to propagate Yog and
Ayurved all over the world and cure people from all
diseases make this world healthy.
Respected Swami Ramdev Ji Maharaj says that the
different companies which are advertising various al-
ternative in order to eradicate AIDS is indeed shameful
for the Indian culture. Swamiji says that good conduct
and self control is the only method to cure AIDS. He

with many people is a sin and leads to many diseases.
Our age old Indian tradition tells us that a person should
have sexual relationship only with the spouse. On the
occasion of AIDS Day, we would like to say that
Yog, Ayurved, the traditions of the Indian sages and
seers can only liberate the world from AIDS.

Swami Ramdev
The navel region consists of a divine
strength, which enlightens the brain or
increases the intelligence; this develops
divine strengths in a person.
The Mooladhar or root chakra
consists of divine strength, which is
known as Kundalini strength in an-
cient texts and as the existence of
Brahma in Vedic literature. Gener-
ally the vital life energy flows in the
Ida and Pingla nerves. When the
person practices pranayam, yogic
asanas and meditation with self-con-
trol then the wonderful divine
strength lying dormant in sushmana
nerve becomes active. The energy
that was used for enjoyment now
moves upwards and gets trans-
formed into strength with Yog prac-
tice. Famous scientists like Plato and
Pythagoras have also mentioned
about these in their articles. They
wrote that the navel region consists
of a divine strength, which enlight-
ens the brain or increases the intelli-
gence; this develops divine strengths
in a person.
Arousal of Kundalini
The strength present in this uni-
verse, is also present in this body -
. fz = orz the main source
of strength is the root chakra. When
this stage and the person is able to
free himself from the cycle of birth
and death. He attains ultimate hap-
piness.
Methods of kundalini arousal
According to Sidhayog, kundalini
is aroused with the help of strength.
if you happen to meet some austere
devotee and a learned guru then his
strong determination become a
stream of light at the time of medi-
tation and starts working in our body.
This bright light full of consciousness
works like a conscience. This posi-
tive strength flowing from gurus
mind helps the devotee as he need
not work much, he saves time and
also attains quick success.
But it is extremely difficult to find
such an accomplished person who
can penetrate in the devotees mind.
Therefore it is important to use
Hathyog to arouse kundalini. Shri
Gorakhnath has described all the
nine chakras in his book titled,
Sidha-Sidhanta Padhati even then
Hathyog is based on the six chakras
namely, root, sacral (swadishthan),
solar plexus (Manipur), heart
(Anahat), throat (Vishudh) and Ajna
chakra. The devotee is able to see
lord Shiva in the crown chakra
(Sahasrar) with the devotion of these
chakras. The body is purified with
this chakra gets
activated, the energy
moves upwards. This
is arousal of kundalini. It
is something like the control
of a switchboard, which has all
the wires connected with it and the
bulbs glow when the switch is on.
The electricity flows from the wires
and lights the bulbs. Similarly, the
divine electric power present in root
chakra gets aroused and other
chakras also arouse automatically.
The kundalini strength moves up-
wards, wherever this strength
reaches, the dormant chakras get
activated and their strength starts
moving upwards. When this strength
reaches the Ajna chakra the con-
templation of mind with idol takes
place. When the same strength
reaches the crown chakra
(Sahasrar) then it removes all the
conditions of the mind and leads to
contemplation of mind without idol.
Divine world present in the mind
also starts showing up in this stage,
this is known as divine wisdom. The
person understands the complete
truth with this wisdom and finally
reaches the stage of deep medita-
tion leading to ultimate bliss, happi-
ness and cheerful state of mind. This
is the final stage of Yog. the lusts
present in the mind get destroyed in

shodhan at least 3 to 11 times.
Concentrate the mind along with
vital life energy and aim for self-re-
alization. In this way continuous
meditation along with chanting
Aumkar helps in reaching the high-
est level of Yog. the vibration cre-
ated with the devotion and medita-
tion done in sequence causes nice
tickle in the root chakra, these mild
tickles or good experiences and
reach the crown chakra through the
nervous system. The electric vibra-
tion created in the crown chakra due
to the stretching of prana creates a
sound in the navel area. This cre-
ates a special heat in the stomach.
This heat changes into determina-
tion. When the electric vibrations
produced with regular practice of
devotion and meditation enter the
astral body through the nervous sys-
tem then some flow moves from our
brain and affects the solar plexus
situated in the navel area through the
nervous system.
The objective of devotion and
meditation is that the vital life en-
ergy moves to upper level from
lower level, and the mind is raised
from active area and positioned in
the scientific body and ethical body
of mind and mind-stuff. In other
words it is the status of crossing the
astral body, mental body and scien-
tific body and gathers the conscious-
ness spread all over the body and
establishes it in the blissful state of
mind and getting established there.
The practitioner can also prac-
tice Gayatri mantra besides chant-
ing Aum. The practitioner should try
to see inside the brain and practice
meditation. He should think that his
mind is full of divine light, it is full,
and a bright light is flowing inside
the brain like torch. This light com-
ing from divine world is like moon-
light and is like a bright light. When
the scientific body becomes pure
and bright then sensory organs come
under its control and they also be-
come pure, clean and pious. In this
condition the cheerful and calm
bright light enjoys the stay in brain
and heart.
The practitioner can also prac-
tice divine brightness along with
chanting Gayatri mantra and
Aumkar. He should feel that the su-
preme soul is providing him bright-
ness and divine light, and this light is
flowing in the heart like sun. the god
is in front of me like a cool light, it is
appearing in my soul. I have just one
desire that this divine light continues
to enlighten my path of life and re-
main with me throughout my life.

Our respiratory system begins from the nostrils and
extends up to the lungs. The air inhaled through nose
passes through voice box and pharynx and reaches the
trachea. It gets divided into right and left side in the
chest. It branches and sub-branches itself 17 to 18 times
and makes a tree like structure of the respiratory sys-
tem. The last branch is known as terminal bronchial, it
also gets divided and opens into 15-20 air vesicle, which
look like bunch of grapes. The blood veins also carry
blood along with all the branches and sub-branches of
the respiratory system. The air vesicles that expand and
contract while breathing in and out and its surrounding
minute capillaries consist of a thin covering which helps
the easy entry and exit of oxygen and carbon dioxide.
Pulmonary arteries bring impure blood from heart to
the lungs and the blood that gets purified in the air vesicles
is carried back to the heart through the pulmonary ar-
teries.
The lungs are conch shaped, narrow from top and
broad from bottom. The lungs spread in two-thirds of
the chest are spongy and stretchable. When we breathe
in, the ribs and chest muscles rise above due to con-
traction and the chest expands. This increases the di-
mensions of the chest on the right-left and front and
behind. In the same way the diaphragm also contracts
and goes below. In this way the dimensions of the chest
increases vertically also. This helps in the entry of air
into the lungs. In normal situation, 75 percent of 400 to
500 ml of air entering in is due to the shifting of dia-
phragm to lower side. The diaphragm moves only one
and half centimeter during normal respiration. All the
muscles come back to original position along with the
diaphragm after inhalation. It exerts pressure on the
lungs and the air moves out. This process of muscles,
ribs and lungs is called elastic requital. Therefore when
we breathe in the chest and stomach expand and come
back to normal position when we breathe out.
In normal respiration, lungs function only up to 20 to
25 percent. The remaining 75 percent remains inactive
and hence the blood flow remains very slow in the re-
maining portion naturally. If we do not exercise the lungs
remain deprived of fresh air and sufficient blood flow.
This is the reason that when we climb up stairs or moun-
tain or run, we start panting. The reason being that the
inactivate portion of the lungs is made to work sud-
denly.
When we practice pranayam the diaphragm moves
seven centimeters below, the muscles of the ribs also
work more. Fresh air entering the lungs makes us happy,
and also increases blood flow. In this way the heart
situated between the lungs gets pressed from all sides,
as a result it also has to work more quickly and effi-
ciently. The oxygen demand of the cells increases which
forces the heart to work more. The cells are also filled
with sufficient blood circulation, vital life energy and
nutritional elements due to quick flow, which were forced
to do fasting in normal situation. The foreign particles
lying there are also removed naturally.
This is about the changes taking place in the chest.
Now let us know about the changes taking place in the
stomach. The liver, 30 feet long digestive system, pan-
creas, spleen, kidneys, adrenal glands, urinary bladder,
rectum and uterus and ovaries in case of women are
situated in between the diaphragm and hipbones. When
the diaphragm moves seven centimeters below then
these organs become weak. Where will they move?
They cannot shift to the legs. The only way out is that
all the organs have to contract a little bit every time this
process takes place so that the diaphragm gets five to
six centimeters extra space. The anterior abdominal wall
also exerts pressure instead of giving space in the front.
This internal massage benefits all the organs with
the help of quick blood circulation, fresh vital life en-
ergy and nutritional elements. All the organs start func-
tioning in synchronized manner. The glands excrete in
sufficient quantity, the foreign particles are removed,
quick blood flow does not suit bacteria, and the cells
have increased immunity power to fight out the diseases
as they get proper amount of vital life energy.
Extra blood is produced in the bone marrow. The
faecal matter accumulated in the intestines is thrown
out. The food consumed gives positive results and
strengthens the body. Quick blood flow strengthens the
central nervous system and all its cells and makes them
hundred percent efficient. Therefore it improves
memory power, grasping power, logical and analytical
skills. It also increases patience and wisdom. Anger,
ego, greed, attachment, addiction start losing their ex-
istence. To conclude the definition of a healthy man
explained in Ayurved starts happening in real life,
^ =-r-n f- nr ttr ;-f+rta ' in other words the
blissful state of body, sensory organs, mind and soul is
real health.

To,
Respected Swami Ramdev Ji Maharaj,
From,
Kathotiya canal flood relief camp, Biharigunj, Dist Madehpura, Bihar
Respected sir,
We are the residents of the nearby village of Kathotiya canal camp. We were the flood victims. We
became homeless. Our house and fields submerged in the water, we could save our lives by reaching Kathotiya
canal. We made small houses with plastic and started living in them. Our cattle were with us. We did not
have any wood or kerosene to make fire, nor we had proper food to eat. The councilor had installed some
temporary taps, which gave us enough water.
Initially volunteers had come to help us. They gave us kichdi. It gave us a ray of hope. Their program
could not continue for long due to some reasons. That was the time when the Patanjali Yogpeeth people
arrived. It was decided to organize Swami jis camp. We got enough food. Food was supplied from 12 noon
to 1 p.m and at night 8 to 9 p.m. On 8
th
one middle aged person dressed in white clothes (Acharya Balkrishna)
came. He met us personally. We felt very happy to receive a person who spoke to us with warmth. We
informed him that we were very happy and we were getting enough food.
One day later Swamiji himself came. We thanked the god. Floods were the means to see him.
Yog camp started from next day morning 6 oclock onwards. Camp in-charge taught us Yog. We could
hear your devotional songs also. The Yog camp was successful in removing the wall of indifference, caste
and creed, rich and poor. We learnt how to survive in the need of hour. We could regain our confidence. We
have decided to lead our lives by following your footsteps.
We will always practice Yog. We shall not have any indifferences. We shall overcome all the hurdles of
cast creed, religion, rich or poor. We shall make our village wealthy. We will grow medicinal plants in our
villages. We shall produce honey. We will plant trees all over the village. We will make the rivers Ganga,
Yamuna, Krishna, Kaveri, and Kosi clean and sacred. We will select a gentleman as our leader. We shall
follow birth control. We will educate our children. We will inspire them to practice Yog. We will avoid bidi,
cigarette, gutka, tobacco, and alcohol. We shall lead a celibate life. We will avoid eating meat, fish and eggs.
We will become healthy and cultured citizens. We will make Kathothiya, Rajni, Shaikhpura, Baidyanathpur,
Ramgunj, Tulsiya, and Babhangaama ideal villages. We will make the entire Bihargunj clean and wealthy.
We shall try to eradicate prevailing indifferences, illiteracy, and blind beliefs from Bihar. We will make this
entire motherland clean, healthy and wealthy.
Swamiji we are villagers, we are illiterates, but we have started loving you. We treat you as our guru. We
are constructing a huge sacred gate at the place where you met us for the first time. We will plant many trees
surrounding it. We shall always remember you. We shall invite you again when the gate is constructed.
The 187 form is a promise to you, which means that we shall always remember you.
Thank you once again
Respectfully,
Villagers of the 5 panchayats
Prakhand Biharigunj Dist Madehpura.

Dr. Bhawanilal Bharatiya
The first 12 chapters of Bhagwadgita propounded
by lord Shri Krishna depict the existence of self. But
one can find the element of God and his unbiased de-
scription from the 13
th
chapter onwards. The descrip-
tion of element of God mentioned in these chapters
clearly shows that the narrator of Bhagwadgita recog-
nizes only that form of God, which is described in Vedas,
Upanishads and Vedic philosophical books. For instance,
read the 12
th
verse of the 13
th
chapter. Here, lord Shri
Krishna keeps himself detached from Godly feeling and
says;
a -r- +rfn ar-rn anr a
I will talk about that element, which is worth of
knowing and the man obtains immortality after know-
ing him. That unending element is the supreme soul.
The Vedas and Upanishads have mentioned immortal-
ity as the synonym of salvation. Rigved also explains
about truth and false (the nature in the form of cause
and work). Yajurved declares it clearly as follows;
an ff-r:fan - n fa r-. -rr fua s+.+s
It means the man reaches beyond death (salvation)
by knowing the God. There is no other path than it to
obtain salvation or immortality. This is the clear decla-
ration of obtaining salvation. The following verse = a.
rfrr (+s.+s is the narration of this sentence
from Upanishad because the same sentence has been
mentioned as =r f r r r r n rt ar ' in
Kathopanishad. But the meaning is similar to that men-
tioned in Gita. The 14
th
verse =f-) nrnr= =f-)
ffan' also proves this fact that the supreme soul
can see in all directions and hence is unending. He has
no fixed qualities, attachment, and is sees everywhere.
The verse fr-at +rarr =t tn' of 15
th
chapter can be compared with the verse a t af-a '
mentioned in Ishavasyopanishad. He is unknowable as
he is extremely minute and is far for ignorant but close
for learned men. He is omnipresent and whole but still
appears to be divided. The devotee feels that he is in-
side his heart. He nourishes and takes care of the men.
He destroys the world during natural calamities and is
hence known as destroyer but at the same time he is
effective.

pears to be the translation of a mantra from Yajurved
(31/18) which describes the divine soul as bright and
beyond darkness. A verse from Kathopanishad

Describes the supreme soul as sun, moon, stars, elec-
tricity and superior to other illuminating elements in front
of fire and producer of lights. In this way, he is knowledge,
knowable and should be considered as the destination of
knowledge. This is the meaning of verse mentioned be-
low.
He is positioned in the heart of the devotee
fr = t ffraan~ (13@17)
The narrator of Bhagwadgita has described nature-
wisdom as knower and knowable in brief and clearly
mentioned in the next verse that this duality of nature
and man is suitable to Hindu philosophy. However , it
needs to be understood that the word man has been
used for both soul and supreme soul in Hindu philoso-
phy. Therefore this duality of Hindu philosophy is actu-
ally the triple element of nature, soul and supreme soul
mentioned in the Vedas because both soul and supreme
soul are expressed through man. Both the man and na-
ture have been mentioned as unending in the verse 13/
19. It is also necessary to understand the other disor
; YOG SANDESH-ENGLISH ; 42
ders produced from unconscious nature and con-
scious man along with understanding the nature and man.
Hindu philosophy (Sankhya) describes these (important
elements, five main elements) in detail. It is essential to
know about the main elements developing ahead of the
nature. The man experiences happiness and unhappi-
ness under the proximity of this nature or its disorders.
Nature is the purpose of his work efficiency or sources
of work. If the man does not come in contact with the
nature and does not take the advantage of its proximity
then the man will not have the desire, interest and
strength to work. The man gets the qualities of work
and enjoyment due to the closeness to the nature. The
same thing has been mentioned in the 21
st
verse;
=rr. fatrr fr n a far-n rr
The 22
nd
verse describes about the qualities and spe-
cialties of supreme soul as follows;
s rr: n-ar +rar +rr ar nr rt.
tnr-n fa rt ar r :ftn =rr. t.
It means the supreme soul is the looker of the works
of creatures. He is not the worker like the living being.
He is the authority, who gives permission to the living
beings to do auspicious work, he bears the world and
hence he is the bearer, he nurtures the world also. The
element of day in this body is known as the supreme
soul.
The 27
th
verse mentions the immortal existence of
the omnipresent supreme soul in the destructive world.
= = rr +r a rr fara-a tn rtn
The supreme soul is present in all the creatures in
equal manner. The devotee who is able to experience
the presence of supreme soul in all directions is the ac-
tual looker. a believer who sees the omnipresent and
omnipotent God will never do any work, which makes
him do anything against the directions of soul and su-
preme soul. such person attains salvation. The 31
st
verse
confirms that the God lives inside the bodies of living
beings yet different from its (body) work. In other words,
the supreme soul resides in the bodies but does not do
or engage in any acts like that of ordinary creatures.
Why is the God different and unengaged in spite of
being present all over? The narrator of Gita replies to
this question and says the sky is spread all over and is
very minute but does not get included in water, fire and
earth. It remains unaffected and separate, similarly, God
is present in the whole body and therefore it remains
separate from it (13/32). The second example mentioned
in Gita is of Sun, the sun enlightens the whole universe
with its brightness. Similarly, the supreme soul residing
in the universe like body enlightens it. This verse can be
compared with the mantra mentioned in Upanishad -
at nr=r = fn fnrfa
In other words, the visible world is enlightened with
the brightness of the supreme soul. he enlightens sun
and other bright objects of the universe.
This philosophy of the supreme soul has been men-
tioned in the 15
th
chapter also. Arjuna asks lord Shri
Krishna due to curiosity in the fourth verse of this chap-
ter

It means we should find the position, which would re-
lieve us from the cycle of death and birth. We should
take the shelter of God in order to achieve this. He is
the one who manages this unending cycle of creation
and would continue for countless years in future also.
The duality of nature and man has been repeated in the
16
th
verse rfr =r r (+s.+e where it has been
said that these two (nature and man) are known as na-
ture and living being. The nature includes mortal be-
ings, whereas the other is immortal soul. the 17

nature.

Prof. Dr. Ravindra Nath Mishra
Gita is not just limited to national or social
subjects, and the subjects that are included are
so meaningful, serious and have a large scope that
their scope can be given extensive scope without any
impact on its teachings or meaning, not only that this
extension of scope will increase its depth, truth and
strength. This widespread form has been mentioned
repeatedly in Gita, which can be related to a particular
virtue, period, respectful feelings. Gita has termed the
yagna related ancient Indian methods and feelings as
mutual give and take relation between lords and human
beings. This ancient practice seems to have disappeared
from India. But the word yagna in Gita is very sym-
bolical, enhanced and denotes element.
The lord related feeling are so free from place, time
and limits and so complete with philosophy and versatil-
ity that we can grasp both yagna and lord with the psy-
chological and natural methods as a fact. These feel-
ings can be implemented on the modern thoughts with
respect to sacrifice and offering oneself for the benefit
of each other and the exchanges taking place amongst
the creatures. This will make their meaning more sig-
nificant and in-depth that they become more true, spiri-
tual and serious and get enlightened with extended light
of truth.
Wherever Gita talks about Sankhya and Yog there
we will talk about Sankhya that propounds the principle
of one man, we will do a comparative analysis of im-
mortal Sankhya that propounds the principle of many
men and nature only that much as is required in this
narration.
We will also analyse the classical, chronological and
actual path of Saint Patanjalis Yog along with the mul-
tidimensional, rich, minute and easy natural Yog of Gita.
Sankhya and Yog as mentioned in Gita are the two paths
taking towards the ultimate truth of philosophy. They
are two mutual-complimentary sources taking towards
the accomplishment of philosophical truth, one is philo-
sophical, intellectual and analytical and the second is
full of devotional feeling, practical, ethical and co-coor-
dinating that reaches to knowledge through experience.
According to Gita, there is no actual difference between
these two teachings. Many people believe that Gita is
the result of some religious community or particular tra-
dition, but it is not true. The teachings of Gita are appli-
cable for everybody, mankind although its origin could
be something else.
The truth of the philosophical method of Gita and
the chronology of its arrangement is not a part of its
advice that can be said to be very important and per-
manent. Majority of the topics of it, its elements and
touching main thought that have been beaded into this
complex literature have an everlasting importance, they
will always be priceless. This is not just an imagination
of philosophical intelligence or some trick that will sur-
prise us. They are the permanent truths of spiritual ex-
perience; they are the facts with evidence of our high-
est spiritual possibilities. Whoever wants to find the se-
cret of this world can never neglect these truths.
Whatever be the analytical procedure of Gita, it does
not mean to authenticate any particular Yog or to sup-
port some philosophical opinion. The language, thoughts,
feelings that have been incorporated in Gita and their
balance are such that can never be found in the nature
of any communal leaders. The flow of thoughts has a
wide scope; its pace moves like waves and embraces
different types of feelings, which is the actual proof of
a sharp intelligence with the strength of synchroniza-
tion and a rich experience. The thoughts of Gita do not
differentiate one from another, but they bring in har
ON GITA JAYANTI

mony and unity.
The principle of Gita is not limited only to philosophy
although its opinion implies the position of pure, ancient,
permanent universe. The principle of Gita is also not
limited to mysteries although the mystery of the nature
of three worlds has been described at all places in its
thoughts.
The principle of Gita is also not special kind of phi-
losophy and Sankhya although its thoughts express that
this world is the creation of the union of nature and
man. It does not propagate god and its devotion like
Vaishnav although it talks only about lord Shri Krishna
the reincarnation of lord Vishnu described in the
Puranas. There is no actual difference between lord
Krishna and Brahma; the status of Brahma is also not
higher to Krishna in any way. The kind of flow we find
in Upanishads can also be seen in Gita, which is both
spiritual and intellectual and therefore we do not find
any such impractical principle, which can hinder its uni-
versal scope. We find all the spiritual truth and experi-
ence of the world in Gita and we can see the glimpse of
holy places in this experience.
Gita begins with philosophical synchronization and it
has established a combination of three great sources
and strengths, namely love, knowledge and work on the
basis of original principles. Gita uses the body and hu-
man devotion in order to establish the divine life in all
areas. This has been said with reference to some con-
text with a different opinion. Besides an attempt has
been made to accept the feeling of man to attain god in
this thought. The sages of Vedic period did have au-
thority on this but it was neglected in the middle age. It
will have an important place in the combination of
thought process, experience in future.
The conclusion derived at on the basis of study of
Gita and thoughts of Shri Arvind on Gita that the study
of Gita does not imply that the objective of its study is to
criticize it on the basis of classical or intellectual analy-
sis or to go back its philosophical principles to history
through spiritual research, we also do not aim to analyse
the thoughts mentioned it in a logical manner.
We read Gita to attain knowledge and seek help.
Therefore our objective should be that we get true mean-
ing and live messages, we should get the real thing with
which can be used by the mankind as a basis of highest
spiritual representation and completeness.
Children! A student has to work hard in order to get
education. It has been written in Mahabharata:
==rrrt t-fur furrt r --==rn,
==rrfr. ar fur ar furfr. ==rn
It means those who want happiness cannot ob-
tain education and those who want to study will have
to sacrifice all types of happiness. if anybody wants
that he should obtain all types of happiness and com-
forts during the period of education and also com-
plete the education then it is not possible.
A student faces lot of difficulties in order to get
education. They do not have complete meals, do
not enjoy full sleep. If a student eats to his satisfac-
tion then he will feel sleepy and will not be able to
study. Therefore a student who wants to study al-
ways eats little, which will save his energy and
thereby be able to study and get educated.
A student who studies till late night does not
sleep. He spends very little time for sleep and the
rest for studies.
A student remains far from different types of
sports and entertainment, he sacrifices all types of
comforts.
You should always remember that if any stu-
dent tries to get comforts at the time of education
then he will not get education, he will remain dull
headed and suffer all through his life.
If a student faces different types of problems
during his education and learns then he will enjoy
all sorts of comforts and happiness throughout his
life.
Moral- the students should concentrate and study,
they should grasp all the good qualities from whom-
ever possible, they should try to obtain them. They
should always have one goal, and that is to become
learned. A student can be successful in his or her
life only with this thought, this is the foundation to
make his nation and family proud.

Water is life. It is the basis of life of all the living
beings. Water is necessary for different activities and it
is used differently depending on its purity. Clean and
pure water is used for household activities, in other
words, water used in house should be free from bacte-
ria, pollutants and fresh, which can be used for drink-
ing, cooking food, taking bath etc. The municipalities of
different cities and towns collect water from rivers and
process it and make it usable for household activities.
The river water is used directly for irrigation purposes,
and also to produce electricity. Contaminated water is
the only reason for almost 50 percent of health related
problems in India. Contaminated water causes serious
diseases like cholera, typhoid, constipation, hepatitis,
intestinal diseases, viral diseases, chronic disorder of
bowel movement etc.
Generally, the municipal authorities chlorinate the
water, to make it pollution free and destroy the bacteria
but virus does not get destroyed. These viruses become
the cause of diseases.
The water coming out from bathrooms, toilets, hos-
pitals, laundry etc is collected in sewerage treatment
plant, and the rainwater is also collected in the same
plant. Generally, in our country the water coming from
sewerage plant is left out into drainages without treat-
ment and they are connected to the nearby rivers, which
actually is the biggest reason for river pollution.
Polythene, silver foil and industrial chemical wastes are
the biggest pollutants.
Solution:
This type of sewerage should be divided into two
parts with the help of treatment. The poisonous and
harmful water (extremely polluted) should be separated
and comparatively non-toxic, non-carbonic water should
be used for the irrigation of plants and fields.
Ganga is the symbol of Indian culture. Its water is
known as the source of liberation from ancient times.
Public awareness has to be created on the basis of fol-
lowing points in order to keep its water pollution free.
Waste conservation:
Green colored waste bins should be placed at the
banks of Ganga in order to collect biodegradable waste
and this should be sent to waste management plant.
Similarly yellow colored dust bins should be placed
at the banks of Ganga to collect bio-non degradable
waste which consists of plastic etc. this should be thrown
in deep ditches or sent to waste management plant.
Waste management system:
The city municipality has to set up a waste manage-
ment system but if it is not available then you can write
directly to the local councilor or MLA and request sanc-
tion of funds from MLA fund for setting up waste
management system. Two separate different colored
dustbins will have to be placed in order to throw wastes.
Public awareness would have to be created by visiting
each and every colony. Polythene, silver foil should be
thrown in yellow colored bins and vegetables, fruit peels
etc. should be thrown in green colored bins.
Tree plantation:
It is extremely necessary to plant trees at the banks
of river Ganga in order to fight out pollution. This can
be done free of cost by contacting the forest depart-
ment. Medicinal plants like neem, wood apple, and
Arjuna and rose wood should be planted. Tree guard
should be used in order to protect the plantations, which
can be obtained with the help of nationalized banks.
MLA fund and Ganga Action Fun can be used for
the following:
Set up a waste management system.
Yellow and green colored dustbins should be placed
in different streets and lanes.
Industrial pollution treatment plants should be setup.
Sewerage treatment plants should be setup.
The closed treatment plants should be restarted and
make them function properly.
Awareness campaigns should be organized in all the
directions and explain the consequences of polythene
waste etc.
Supervision:
Meet the MLA/ councilor/ District collector/ and
concerned officers for this task and give a written ap-
plication. You can demand the district collector to set
up a five-member group of officers associated with
Ganga Action Plan and district administration. This
group will monitor the work on a weekly basis. The

government expenditure is carried on with the taxes
that we pay, in other words do not neglect any callous-
ness in government work and report the matter to the
concerned head of the department.
Fieldwork
You can take the support of municipility welfare as-
sociations, students groups like NSS, NCC, Red
cross and work at the banks of Ganga for at least
two hours on Sundays.
Request the district collector that Patanjali Yog com-
mittee, Save Ganga Forum should be made the mem-
bers of pollution control supervisory committee.
All types of pollution are harmful for man like:
Water pollution, air pollution, noise pollution, soil
pollution.
But water pollution is the fastest reasons for several
dangerous diseases. Water pollution has to be controlled
if the objective of Healthy India has to be achieved.
The word cancer is very frightening. Doctors
all over the world are doing research in order to fight
out this dreadful diseases. The American researchers
have now claimed to have found a solution to cure
brain tumour. The researchers claim that this method
would help in performing operation before the spread
of cancer.
They also say that it is still difficult to understand
cancer in spite of conducting all types of research.
Genes play an important role in this case. Chief re-
searcher Dr. Bert Volzalstine of Hopkins University
said that the more we want to understand cancer, the
more difficult it gets. If you take the case of 100 can-
cer patients, then you will find all the 100 cases to be
completely different. Whatever medicines are being
manufactured, they have impact on only one gene
whereas there are different reasons for cancer.
According to the researchers the best possible
treatment to stop cancer is to control the abnormal
growth of tumour. The researchers conducted a study
on the patients of pancreatic cancer and brain tumour.
These types of cancer occur at some particular places.
Another researcher Dr. Kenneth Kinzeller says
that generally change in genes becomes helpful in de-
tecting tumour. A gene called IDH has been recog-
nized that can help detect brain tumour. The patient
dies within one year due to this cancer.
According to Dr.Victor Welculescu, brain tumour
is considered to be one disease but actually it is two
diseases. The researcher says that the pharmaceuti-
cal companies should make some technical changes
in the process of drug manufacture so that the medi-
cines can be useful for all types of cancer.
Smoking affects around five lakh Americans ev-
ery year
Around five lakh people are becoming victims of
cancer in America due to the consumption of tobacco.
According to a report, around 24 lakh people suffered
from cancer between 1999 and 2004 due to consump-
tion of cancer. This report was published by the dis-
ease control and prevention center of America (CDC).
According to the report half of the cancer cases
are related to lungs and respiratory tract. The report
says that use of tobacco increases the risk of mouth,
stomach and kidney cancer. The deaths taking place
due to consumption of tobacco every year is more than
the total deaths taking place due to road accidents,
suicides, AIDS, alcohol addiction. It has been said that
the nation is facing a loss of 167 billion dollars annually
in the form of loss of productivity and medical ser-
vices due to smoking.
This is the reason that revered Swami Ji Maharaj has
taken the mission of making the Ganga water pollution
free. Ganga affects the life of 40 crore people.
Awareness campaign related to polythene:
Create public awareness in your areas against that
polythene is a harmful factor for creating polluting.
Organize public awareness campaigns against plas-
tic.
Keep a proposal in front of the administration to com-
pletely prohibit the use of polythene on the banks of
river Ganga.
Solutions
Stop the use of polythene completely.
The Yog teachers of Patanjali and devotees
should be aware of this fact so that they can inspire
others to follow it.
Use a bag made of cloth or jute to purchase
vegetables and provision items.

Word meaning: Karmana: type of work, form of
work, Hi: undoubtedly, Api: also, Bodhavyam: should
know, bodhavyam: worth knowing, cha: and, vikarmana:
opposite work, prohibited work, form of sins, Akarmana:
truth of false work, cha: also, bodhavyam: should be
known, Karmana: element of work, Gati: movement,
secret, Gahana: serious, depth.
Meaning: Lord Shri Krishna says to Arjuna, Oh
Arjuna! Man should undoubtedly know the form of work
and also of opposite work. He should know wrong work
because the pace of work is very deep.
Explanation: The meaning of the above verse is
very simple and clear. It does not seem to have any
depth. But it is not possible that the words of Krishna
are meaningless. Therefore we are forced to under-
stand its meaning. The word Karma has been used
thrice in this verse. The work was used singly at first,
later it was used with opposite and wrong. Therefore
there are three words, work, opposite work and wrong
work. The man has to understand just these words. If
the man understands these then the whole meaning will
be clear automatically.
Work means work combined with mind. This work
can be auspicious-inauspicious, religious- irreligious,
good-bad, mental or physical. But Shri Krishna is talk-
ing about only the religious good works. Now the ques-
tion arises as to what is religion?ar =r frv=
f=fq. = rn.' it means the works, which give good
position to man and give spiritual progress along with
worldly progress, in other words help in attaining libera-
tion is called religion. However, progress can be seen
with sinful works also. We see people progressing in
life through dishonesty, bribery, theft, dacoity, kidnap-
ping, adulteration, illegal occupation of houses, shops,
land etc, and crime. Not only that the pace of such
progress is considerably quicker. But progress made
with such illegal sources become obstacles in the path
of liberation and hence irreligious. Therefore it has con-
cluded that responsible works done as per classics is
work. But this does not clarify the form of work. Actu-
ally it is necessary to understand the feeling behind the
performance of a work, with what feeling the work has
been done, which work has been done in which situa-
tion and in what manner. The form of work changes
with the variance in feeling. For example, when a sol-
dier kills an enemy in the battlefield, or kills a terrorist
or a criminal, then he is performing the duty of warrior.
However if the same soldier kills his colleague or of-
ficer then it is irreligious. Although the place and weapon
to kill is the battleground but the form of work has
changed due to change in the feeling. In the same way
if the same soldier kills an innocent person due to ven-
geance or anger then also it is his irreligious work. Here
both the place and feeling have changed. Therefore it
is very important to understand the feeling, type, place
and condition of work. Only a great knowledgeable
person can tell which person should perform which work
as per classics.
The second word is opposite work, the negative work
as opposed to those mentioned in the classics like speak-
ing lies, stealing, violence, indulging in extramarital af-
fairs, consuming food that increases passion, gambling
etc. are vices or sins.
There are some sins, which are extremely serious
kind of sins like disrespecting religious gurus, indulging
in sexual acts with the wife of teacher, similarly estab-
lishing sexual relations with daughter-in-law, or own
daughter come under such serious sins. The person
committing such sins gets results very soon and in the
same birth. It has been said in classics

r f tr nr a ' there is a story in
Shrimadbhagwadgita. When king Nahush kicked sage
Agastya and disrespected him then he turned into a snake
due to the curse of the sage. This is a good example of
the result of heinous sins. But this alone does not clarify
the form of negative work. Some ignorant people con-
sider virtue to be sin and vice versa. A poet, writer and
intellectual person of a highest order consumes alcohol
and tries to prove logically that the thoughts cannot be
focused, or that creativity cannot be expressed without
it. It is necessary for deep thinking. I had read some-
where that whenever the President of America deliv-
ered a speech after sexual act, which used to be his
best, energetic and inspiring speeches. The person who
accepts bribe says that if I have to work then I have to
accept bribe. I can manage my household expenses with
limited salary but how do I fill the pockets of my supe-
riors and officers in order to save my job? You do not
understand my compulsion. I am forced to work against
my inner conscious due to this pressure. In this way
many people consider sins to be virtuous responsibili-
ties. On the other hand there is a person who considers
worship, prayers, devotion, meditation as pretence, cra-
ziness or pomp and show (in one considers it to be sin).
He says that it is better to do some creative work or
enjoy life instead of wasting time in such tasks. There
is a famous saying in this context, Even Devils quote
Bible in their favour. Here it needs to be clearly un-
derstood that a work can be responsible work for one
person whereas negative work for another person. For
instance, earning money for running a family, education
of children, their marriage etc. is a work for a house-
hold man. Whereas the same work is a sin or negative
work for an ascetic. Sexual act with own wife is a reli-
gious work for a married man but the other stages
celibacy, living in forest and asceticism are negative
works for him. It means that a work can become nega-
tive work with the change in situation. Only a learned
person can understand this deep meaning.
The third word is wrong work. Many people have writ-
ten it as incapability. I do not agree with this because
man cannot live without work. It is necessary to do the
work whether it is auspicious-inauspicious, physical or
mental. This is a human tendency. The man remains
active every moment, every second. Had it been just
for livelihood then why would the children of Tata, Birla,
Ambani and other multi-millionaires been working? Sev-
eral generations to come can live happily with just the
interest received on the capital. But man had to do work
due to his own nature. In a nutshell, the meaning of
wrong work cannot be incapability. Then what is the
meaning of wrong work? According to me, wrong work
means, work without desire, work without expectation,
work done without thinking about the result. This is
known as selfless work. A suspicion arises as to why
should a man work without expecting results? The an-
swer is that it is possible to do it. How? If I think re-
move ego while doing work and think that it is gods
work, divine work and that he is making us work and he
will only give results, I am just a source. I have to be
sincere with full capacity and depending on my inter-
est. The strength that is making us do the work and that
which gives us strength is something else. Lord Krishna
explains this fact in the second chapter.
r ntr = nr fr = n --r =
f=q f=q r . =nr +r -r =n- r n s-a ntar-z.+s
god gives results according to his own judgment. The
result can be achieved in this birth or after 10, 20, 100
or thousands of years. Only god knows as to whose file
will be processed at what time. However, it is definite
that a person does get the results for good and bad deeds.
It has been said, =rn +rr a a n rr +rrrr +rn '
work cannot be completed without doing it. God gives
unbiased judgment. He does not accept any recommen-
dation or discount. According to Hitopadesh:
tnr- rr r - r- r
rr +rrrr +rnr-nn atnr- a arr ar a-
ar- ar fra rrr fa'
it means when a man performs some task with some
purpose, source, type, time and duration, then that work
controls the man to the same place, same duration, with
the same purpose, same source and in the same man-
ner.
The last sentence is nrr nrr nfa.'
It means the pace of work is very deep. An ordinary
man cannot understand the secret of work. He only
sees that many people do negative works but still enjoy
happiness. on the other hand a person who does virtu-
ous work is unhappy. Therefore it is meaningless to get
involved in sins and virtues. A man should live accord-
ing to the situation. Who knows about the next birth?
But as has been mentioned earlier that every person
gets the results of the work. The words, work, negative
work and negative work have very minute differences,
and it is necessary to understand the deep meaning.
Every man cannot differentiate it. Many learned, intel-
lectual and scholarly people also commit mistakes in
understanding the meaning. Hence it is necessary to
live in the proximity of learned people in order to under-
stand the element of work thoroughly.

Execution cell in Gorakhpur (U.P.),
Where Bismil Was hanged
The martyrs of our nation strived for freedom but
never bothered about name or fame. There are a num-
ber of martyrs whose names are not known but they
should be always remembered and saluted. The wind
sings songs in their praise and the sunrays also bow in
front of them.
The moon showers its soothing light on the Martyrs
memorial (Keerti Sthambha) built in memory of the
martyrs. The future generations will sing in their praise
and remember their valour forever. They will get inspi-
ration, strength and feeling of determination to protect
the motherland and its freedom
Their souls are resting in the foundation of monu-
ments. Their blood was used to gain leadership. Castles
of freedom were constructed on their crushed bodies.
Each drop of their blood had immense strength that
gained freedom for the nation. Had our great martyrs
not sacrificed their lives for the motherland then we
would still be slaves under British leadership.
The freedom struggle, which started in 1857, came
to an end only after India became free on 15
th
August
1947. A number of martyrs shed their blood in this pe-
riod of 100 years. A few names are found in the history
and the rest are lost. These sacrifices are as relevant
today as they were in yesteryears. At that time they
had the question of freeing India and today it is the ques-
tion of protecting it.
Gorakhpur dist jail Sri Rajendranath Lahidi main
accused in the Kakori event sacrificed his life for the
motherland on 17
th
December 1927 two days earlier to
his friends. On 19
th
December 1927 three other revolu-
tionists gave their lives. Each one of them had serious-
ness that cannot be described. They had the passion of
playing with their lives. They were not afraid of death.
They were not brought to the lasso in unconscious stage
like others. They were preparing themselves for this.
Pandit Ramprasad Bismil prepared himself for death.
Bismil was waiting for the time. He got the notice of
the time of hanging along with sunrise; he smiled and
shouted slogans Vande Mataram and Bharat Mata
Ke Jai. He was very happy to be hanged, he shouted
I wish the downfall of British Emperor. He was ready
to sacrifice for the motherland and came to the lasso
with smiling face. The air of his body blended with the
atmospheric air. After a few seconds his body hanged
from the noose and there was complete silence every-
where. He sacrificed his entire life for the nation. The
nation was in deep sorrow. Everybody showered flow-
ers on his body. His name is written in golden words in
the history of freedom struggle.
The Gorakhpur region has a unique feature. Many
eminent personalities have worked in different regions
of India but chose this place for their salvation. We can
recall Lord Buddha and Kabirdas in this regard. The
; YOG SANDESH-ENGLISH ; 50
great martyr Pandit Ram Prasad Bismil is one of
them.
Bismil did not work in Gorakhpur but he breathed
his last here. The British hanged him to death as an
accused in Kakori event on 19th December 1927. His
last rites were performed on the banks of the river Rapti.
Bismil wrote many letters and articles during his stay in
the jail. These articles played an important role in the
freedom struggle. His martyrdom was a ray of hope to
the complete mankind.
His work was very effective and he became dear to
the people of Gorakhpur and remains in his heart even
today. Bismil wrote a letter before the Kakori event,
which brought freedom successfully. The British seized
his letter and literature. This paved way for his revo-
lutionary ideas and an armed revolutionary group namely
Hindustan Republic Association took birth, which
spread all over in due course of time.
Bismil studied Lenins literature thoroughly, after
being arrested in Kakori case, the police and the Dis-
trict Magistrate pressurized Bismil and said that if he
revealed about Bengal, he could be given 15 thousands
cash prize and sent to England immediately after he
was released from the jail.
His famous song titled, Sarfaroshi ki Tammanna,
was very inspiring for the people who sacrificed their
lives at the time of freedom struggle. Even today these
words inspire us to struggle and save the motherland.
