Conditions Which Generate This Code: This diagnostic code is recorded w hen the ECM reads the system voltage as being below 23.0 DCV. The possible causes of this diagnostic code are listed: A charging system component is faulty. The machine harness is faulty. The ECM has failed. This is unlikely. System Response: W hen this diagnostic code occurs, a w arning (Category 3) is show n on the monitor. The transmission w ill shift into NEUTRAL if system voltage drops below approximately 18 DCV. Normal operation w ill resume after the problem has been corrected and after the speed/direction control lever has been returned to PARK. The normal operation resumes w hen the voltage recovers above 23 DCV. Test Step 1. CHECK THE BATTERY VOLTAGE. 1. Start the engine and run the engine at high idle for several minutes. 1. Measure the voltage of the battery at the battery posts. Expected Result: The battery voltage should be greater than 23.0 DCV. Results: OK - The battery voltage is greater than 23.0 DCV. The battery voltage is correct. Proceed to test step 2. NOT OK - The battery voltage is NOT greater than 23.0 DCV. Repair: Check the charging system. See Special Instruction, REHS0354, "Charging System Troubleshooting" for more information. Stop. Test Step 2. CHECK THE SY STEM VOLTAGE AT THE ECM. 1. The engine remains running at high idle. 1. DO NOT DISCONNECT the machine harness from the ECM. 1. Use the 7X-1710 Multimeter Probe to measure the positive voltage (DCV) betw een contacts D-1 (w ire 164-W H) and contact D-2 (w ire 202-BK). Expected Result: The voltage measurement is greater than 23.0 DCV. Results: OK - The voltage is greater than 23.0 DCV. The battery voltage is correct. Proceed to test step 3. NOT OK - The voltage is NOT correct. The machine harness has failed. Repair: Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness. Stop. Test Step 3. CHECK IF THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE REMAINS. 1. Turn the key start sw itch and the disconnect sw itch to the OFF position. 1. Disconnect connector B and connector D from the ECM. Inspect the contacts of the harness connectors and clean the contacts. 1. Reconnect all harness connectors. 1. Turn the key start sw itch and the disconnect sw itch to the ON position. 1. Enter the service mode of the Caterpillar Monitoring System and clear all inactive diagnostic codes. 1. Operate the machine. 1. View the status of CID 0168 FMI 04. Expected Result: The diagnostic code is NO longer active. Results: Y ES - The diagnostic code is NO longer active. The diagnostic code does not exist at this time. The initial diagnostic code w as probably caused by a poor electrical connection or a short at one of the harness connectors that w as disconnected and reconnected. Stop. NO - The diagnostic code has NOT been corrected. Repair: Resume normal machine operation. It is unlikely that the ECM is faulty. Exit this procedure and perform this procedure again. If the cause of the diagnostic code is not found, replace the ECM. See Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace". Stop. Donnie :

STOP Donnie : None of these codes are related to the engine. Donnie : I think you should focus on the fuel system. Donnie : The 0790 168F04 is low voltage but, it think this machine has the latching fuel shutoff and w ould not be effected by the low voltage. Donnie : The best things to check on the fuel system is the pressure going to the back of the cylinder head (supply). Then check the suction and return lines for air in the fuel. Donnie : Install a piece of clear line w ere the suction line goes to the engine and run engine to see the flow . Only a small amount of air should be seen. Move line to betw een the w ater separator and the transfer pump second and recheck. Lastly move it to the return line and check for air coming from the engine. If no air is going into the engine but it is coming from the engine (more w ill be seen under load), you have a loose injector and you should have them all removed, cleaned and reseated w ith the press tool for a proper fit. Customer : Lost at the moment: w e have been running the machine only on w eekends, last w eek ran fine, now after a cold w eather start, develops this miss and huge loss of pow er. could this have anything to do w ith using the ether aid? Donnie : No, not unless it over loaded the engine w ith ether and caused to lock and bend a connecting rod. This is not like using the factory system. Donnie : The factory system limits the amount and only allow s one shot per starting attempt. Customer :

That's w hat i used so relieved to know that is probably not the case. Donnie : It is the safest w ay. The most common problem w ith this engine is air in the fuel and/or low fuel pressure. Customer : Does this engine use a mechanical lift pump to feed the injection pump? Donnie : The transfer pump is built into the governor drive housing. This engine does not have an injection pump. It has mechanical unit injectors (MUI) similar to the Detroit Diesel. Customer : I w ill try your first few tips and see w here it takes me. Thanks for responding so quickly, Donnie. Donnie : OK, let me know w hat you find. By the w ay, fuel pressure needs to be above 35 psi, 50 is best. The tranfer pump can only make 80 psi in perfect conditons. You can pinch off the return line to see how high it can get but, only do this for a short period of time.
