Depending upon the context, a sequence like ra _tigm Sn can mean either 'go -' or 'come - out to the restaurant'. The combination @ira may occur with the same meanings as ra alone. Note the parallelism between (ai) ra and (ai) let: ‘come to this restaurant! lei tigm un nay toome out to this restaurant! ra tigm an nay ort di lei tigm an nay ort di ra tigm un ney tgo to that restaurant! lei tigm un a8 tgo out to that resteurantt re tigm un a6 ort ai lei tidm an a6 or: Give tigm an a6 én means tmoott i.e. 'greot! or twoloome', whereas gip means meet! or ‘make the acquaintance oft or ‘encountert, or tmeet with'. Qua is an action verbal which denotes motion across. Depending upon the context, it can mean "go over! or 'come over!. Like Igi and ra, it often occurs in combination with di. Thus, (Gi) que tigm un ndy 'come over to this restaurant', (ai) qua tigm un a6 'go over to that restaurantt. When the context makes the meaning clear, im may occur without vigay moaning ‘work! . dais and si-quén are alternate terms for tembassy!. ‘The former occurs more conmonly in daily conversation, whereas the latter is a more formal term. Words 1ike linh-sy toonsul', which denote professions, coour both with lam and 2: Ong ay 1am lanh-sy. 'He is (i.e. serves as) a consul.! Ong ay 14 1anh-sy. Me 4s a consul.tLESSON 11 However, when the place where the professional activity occurs is included, the lam alternant is regularly used: Ong ay lam lanh-sy o Hus. ‘He is (1.e. serves as) a consul in Hu Grammar Notes I. ime words: Days of the Week and Parts of the Day The days of the week are designated as follows in Vietnamese: ebt-nhgst ‘sunday! thit hai ‘Monday tht ba ‘Tuesday! tnt toe ‘Wednesday? ‘thi nim ‘thursday! thit sdu ‘Friday! thit bay ‘Saturday! The corresponding question word is: thi may? ‘what dey?! The recurring thi in all but the first member of the series is the regular marker for ordinal numbers. Thus, thi haf means Literally "second [day of the week]".* Tht tu ‘Wednesday! is an irregular member of the ordinal series. When a member of this series occurs unmodified it may indicate either the day referred to when it occurs next, or, depending on context, the repeated occurrence of that day. Tims: Tht bay ng dy ai. 'He's going Saturday (i.e. this coming Saturday).' or: 'He goes Saturdays (1.0. in general).! Day name + nao, followed somewnere later in the sentence by cling + verbal refers to every such day. (Compare Lesson 9, Grammar Note VI).
