..1. Verb: Class verbs - 'contracted' and 'non-contracted' fOrmB.
H1stor1calJ.y, the verbs wll1ch are called Class 11 verbs' in our Course used to have
two alternate forms: a 'non-contracted' form and a contracted' one. 'lhe 'non-contracted'
fOrmB had the first person s1ngular present eIXiings wh11e the contracted
ones the preceding the was lost aIXi the stress W8S carried to the last syllable
(e.g.
In modern spoken Greek (see Note 13.') the non-contracted forms are used e1ther
(GrOUP 1), interchangeably (GrOUP 2) or not at a11 (Group 3). This divis10n 1s
not applicable to modem katharevousa, where only the contracted forms these verbs are
used; but the conjugat1on pattem 1s pred1ctable from their ancient non-contracted forms.
