PREFACE

Nowadays, our country is experiencing erratic power shortage. Brownouts occur from four to
eight hours. Sometimes we do not know when power will come in; it may either be in the
morning, afternoon, or evening. Such a situation results in low productivity and idleness.

This module was conceived to convert idle time during powerless hours into productive use for
people like:

(1)Those without knowledge of typing;

(2)Those with a little knowledge of typing but with “sight method of approach”;
(3)Those who know touch typing but would like to learn about word processing.

It is of great importance that one knows how to type and better still has a mastery of the
keyboard as this knowledge will facilitate learning word processing.

All the exercises in this module can be done on a standard typewriter, electric typewriter, or
personal in performing office tasks due to the voluminous paperwork and numerous advantages
of word processing. For instance, one can erase instantly without the use of an eraser or
correction fluid; one can center automatically with the command of a function key; one can
create, insert, alter, edit, move, save, and retrieve documents. One can enhance his text by
underlining or boldfacing. One can select the letter printing from the finest to the largest. These
are but a few of the many possible advantages of word processing.

TYPEWRITING/KEYBOARDING AND WORD PROCESSING is programmed to develop typing

dexterity and computer flexibility. The first unit acquaints you with the operational parts of the
computer keyboard. After you have acquired a mastery of the entire keyboard, the building of
speed and improvement of accuracy and emphasized.
UNIT I – PREPARING TO TYPE

A. The Keyboard

The keyboard is the primary user input device. It enables you to communicate with your
computer. While the mouse is also a fundamental device to control the PC, the keyboard goes
one step further by allowing you to enter specific information as opposed to simply pointing and
clicking.

The keyboard connects to the computer

through a wire, although wireless
keyboards are also available. Variations of the classic keyboard include the addition of action
specific buttons, most commonly for Internet features, and split keyboards which angle the two
halves of the keyboard to reduce stress on your wrists as you type.
