Principles of Electrical Engineering - Standards and Units: the basic electric circuit and Ohm's

Law, resistors in series and parallel, double subscript notation, cells with internal resistance.
Circuit Analysis: Kirchoff's Laws and Thevenin's Theorem.
Electromagnetism: magnetic field strength, magnetic flux density, permeability, Faraday's
Law and Lenz's Law, inductance and magnetic circuits
Electrostatics: electric field strength, electric flux density, permittivity, capacitance,
capacitors in series and parallel, energy stored in a capacitor
Alternating Current: frequency, period, amplitude, angular frequency, average value, r.m.s.
value and form factor, representation of alternating waveforms by phasor diagrams, addition
and subtraction of phasors.
Single Phase circuits: circuits with resistance, inductance and capacitance, phase
relationships in single phase circuits, power measurement using a wattmeter, power factor
angle and power diagrams.
Three Phase circuits: star and mesh connected systems with balanced loads, relationships
between line and phase voltages/currents in star and mesh connected systems, power
measurement using two wattmeters, power factor angle, power diagrams, three-phase
squirrel cage induction motors

Principles of Electrical Engineering - The basic electric circuit and Ohm’s Law. Resistors in
series and parallel. Circuit analysis, Kirchoff’s Laws. Relationship between Electrical and
Mechanical systems. Faraday’s Law and Lenz’s Law. Meters and Potentiometers. Loading
effects. Bridge circuits. Amplifiers. Measurement of Force, Velocity, Displacement and
Temperature
Digital systems and instrumentation - (this will form half the course)
Number systems and codes: Binary, Hexadecimal, BCD, ASCII
Logic systems: Logic function, Boolean algebra, Truth tables
Logic gates and digital circuits: Principles of combination and sequential logic circuits
Digital Interfacing: D/A and A/D converters
The Laboratory requirement for the course will be 4 labs of two hours duration per student
