AEI305.75 1
Objectives

Upon completion of this topic, you will be able to

know about
• Weight measurement

• Introduction

• Types

AEI305.75 2
Introduction

• The weight and force terms are used exchangeable

• The weight measuring systems are calibrated in

kilograms

• The force measuring systems are in calibrated Newton

AEI305.75 3
Definitions of weight & its related terms

Mass :

• The mass of a body is defined as the quantity of

matter in that body and it remains unchanged when
taken to any location.

• Units of mass: kilogram

AEI305.75 4
Definitions

Force

• Force is that which produces or tends to produce a

change of velocity in a body at rest or in motion.

• Force has magnitude, direction and a point of

application.

AEI305.75 5
Definitions

F = ma

• Where, m is a mass

• a is the acceleration

• Units of force : Newton

AEI305.75 6
Definitions
Weight

• Weight ‘w’ of a body of mass ‘m’ at rest relative to the

surface of the earth is defined as the force exerted on
it by gravity.

• W=mxg
where, g is the acceleration due to gravity

• Units of weight: kilogram (Kg)

AEI305.75 7
Types of weight measurement

• Weighing principles

• Weight is unaffected by temperature

• If the material can be physically handled, it can be

weighed.

AEI305.75 8
Types of weighing

There are basically three types

1) Mechanical types
• Lever scales
• Spring Balance scales

2) Load Cells tips

• Pneumatic
• hydraulic

AEI305.75 9
3) Electronic types
• Strain gauge type

• Capacitance type

• LVDT type

• Magnetostrictive

• photoelectric
