Mechanism of action and indications
(Why med ordered)
Binds to an enzyme in the presence of acidic gastric pH,
preventing the final transport of hydrogen ions into the gastric
lumen.
For IV meds, compatibility with IV drips and/or solutions
0.9% NaCl, D5W, LR.
Rate of Administration
For direct IV dilute each vial with 10 mL of 0.9% NaCl for a
concentration of 4mg/mL administer over at least 2 min. For
intermittent Infusion dilute further with 100 mL of D5W,
0.9% NaCl or LR for a concentration of 0.4 mg/mL
administer over 15 min at a rate of 3mg/min

containing aspirin or NSAIDs, and foods that may cause an increase in
GI irritation. Advise patient to report onset of black, tarry stools;
diarrhea; or abdominal pain to health care professional promptly

Why would you hold or not give this Check after giving
med? Signs of healing of the esophagus and
I wouldn’t unless the pt was NPO, it is the pt’s level of comfort
important to continue therapy even after
symptoms have disappeared. I would however
consult the physician if the pt was
experiencing intolerable side effects.
