September 15,2011 Supreme COUli Nominating Commission Chief Justice Mary Mullarkey, Ex Officio Chair 101 W. Colfax Avenue Suite 800 Denver, Colorado 80202 Re: Judicial Application/Patrick T. O'Rourke

Dear Commission Members: Thank you for considering Pat O'Rourke for the available position on the Colorado Supreme COUli. I believe he is well-qualified and well-suited for either position. I know Pat from my tenure as the President of the University of Colorado. He was the lead attorney in the litigation department. He represented the University in several cases that were important to the University, not only legally, but also in the public's perception of the institution. Because the citizens of the State of Colorado SUppOlt the University, they legitimately expect the University's attorneys to represent it with competency and integrity. Pat has represented the University exceptionally well in the courtroom and in the community. I believe that Pat possesses the skills necessary for him to thrive as ajudge. He cares deeply about his work and about the law. Both orally and in writing, he can communicate complicated legal concepts in a manner that is understandable to lawyers and non-lawyers alike. If the Commission were to nominate him, it could make the nomination with confidence that he would treat all litigants and their attorneys respectfully. More importantly, I believe Pat would give every case fair and equal consideration. Sincerely,

~~
