Thursday, September 15, 2011 Family Life and Sexual Health Curriculum Preview Night November 3, 2011
Parents/Guardians are invited to attend a Family Life and Sexual Health (F.L.A.S.H.) Curriculum Preview Night on Thursday, November 3rd, 6:30 - 7:30PM in room D-105 at the Shoreline Center (18560 1st Ave. NE). Parents/Guardians will be able to preview the Curriculum notebook and lessons for students in grades 4-6. Beth Reis from King County Health, and Teri Poff, Shoreline Director of Teaching and Learning, will give an overview of the curriculum, the districts adoption process, and the guidelines for teachers to use when teaching the curriculum. The curriculum materials can also be viewed online at www.kingcounty.gov/health/FLASH. The Shoreline School Board has approved the use of FLASH (Family Life and Sexual Health) curriculum in grades 4-12. The Board acted on the recommendation of the District Instructional Materials Committee and the Committee to Select Sexual Health Curriculum. The District received a grant in 2010 to adopt new sexual health materials. A committee of parents, teachers, nurses and students has been working throughout the year with facilitators from King County Health and the Center for Health Training to evaluate the state approved programs and ensure that the District is in compliance with current state laws regarding sexual health education.
