2nd Grade Reading Block

Unit 1 Week 3 Fighting the Fire

MONDAY: 8/29/11 Warm up: (vocabulary, phonics, pa) Phonics Worksheet 8 Morning Message: (vocab, fluency, comprehension) Write morning message on chart paper: Have you ever been camping? First you go into the forest and set up a tent. Then you build a nice camp fire. The flames will glow red hot and you can feel the heat. You can cook hot dogs on a stick and maybe eat marshmallows. After you eat, you can sit around the camp fire and tell scary stories. Finally you will crawl into your tent and fall asleep, safe and sound! y y Echo read the morning message. What happened in this little story? (sequence)

Phonics Time: (pa/phonics) Review long a and short a with Tucker. Look at morning message. y Underline short a words in red. y Circle long a words in blue Whats the difference between short a and long a words? MAGIC E show them wand and examples: Cap cape Tap tape Hat hate Man mane Sam same Rat rate Mat mate Give students 2 post it notes. One saying long a, the other saying short a. Stick them on their palms. Read words aloud to students on pg 71a &b. Tell students to raise the correct hand when they hear the long or short a sound. Word Wall Practice: (vocab, fluency) Read pg 72-73 as intro to words of the week. y Ask students to read the highlighted words. Write them on the board. Discuss words. Have each student make a sentence with the words. Assessment: (pa, phonics, vocab, comprehension) Do WBO 17 and 18 Game time;. (fluency, vocabulary, pa, phonics) Sight word memory (2 groups of 4 students)

Setting? What happened in the beginning? Middle? End? Word Wall Practice: (vocab, fluency) Look at morning message. Have students help remember which words are the words of the week. Then make a green square around the words of the week. Do cloze reading of vocabulary words on chart paper (see pg 73h) Begin word study booklet (if time) Phonics Time: (pa/phonics) Review sound and Tucker sign for short a and long a Work with magic e again. Use pg 73F as guide. Check Warm Up Phonics worksheet together in class (trade and grade!) After you read it, they make book cover and create their own title. Game time;. (fluency, vocabulary, pa, phonics) Play Trash Ball with sight words and decodable word cards.
