SinceitsfoundingtohelpWWIconscientiousobjectorsservethoseinneed,theAmericanFriends ServiceCommitteehasworkedinareashitbyhumanitariandisaster. WhennaturaldisastersstrikeinareaswhereAFSChasprogramsorlongtimeexperience(suchasin Haiti),weworktomeetimmediateneeds.AndAFSCcontinuestoworkwithcommunitieslongafterthe immediatecrisisisover,supportinglocalpeopleastheyrecoverandrebuildlivesandcommunities. Forseveraldecades,AFSCoperatedamultifaceteddevelopmentprogramintheremoteGrandAnse regioninsouthwestHaiti.Inaruralarea,weconstructedthefirsthealthclinictoservesome40,000 people,trainedvillagehealthpromoters,andconductedadultliteracyclasses.Economicendeavors includedreforestationwithfruittrees,providingequipmentforfishingfamilies,establishingcooperative storestosellcommoditiesatfairprices,andsupportingtheraisingandpropercareofindigenousCreole pigsandgoats.AFSCturnedtheseprojectsovertolocalleadershipin2009. Aspartofanongoingresponsetothe2010earthquakeinHaiti,AFSCisworkingintwocommunities locatedinMartissant(PortauPrince)andLeogane,atownclosetothecapitalthatsuffereddestruction ofupto8090%ofitsurbanarea.Ourapproachistohelpthecommunitiesidentifytheirneeds themselves,andworkinpartnershipwithlocalorganizationsandcommunitymemberstomeetthose needs. TheoverallgoalofAFSCsworkinHaitiistostrengthenlocalcapacitytomanageconflictsandreduce violence.Thestartingpointforthisworkhasbeentocreateasafespaceineachcommunitybysetting upalarge,mobiletentineachoftheshelters.AFSChasnowerectedlargetentsinbothcommunities, wheretheyserveascommonmeetingareasandplaceswhereimmediateassistanceandconflict resolutionworkcanbeprovided.
