English courses
These are the places to start your studies in the UK. Students want to learn English for many different reasons, and so there are many different courses on offer. The three main types are: general courses, work-related courses and study-related courses. These are the ones you will find most often:

Vacation courses
These courses are popular with adults and teenagers and are the perfect way to combine a holiday with learning some English. Junior courses usually combine English with sightseeing and sports. Adult courses are often called English Plus, because students can choose to study something else often culture, or a sport - as well as the language. Courses often last just a week or two weeks.

General and Intensive English

These are a great choice for most students who want to improve their language skills for education or work. Courses will cover speaking, reading and writing and you can join them for a few weeks or many months. The tutors will make sure that you become better and more confident at speaking during the course. You will also get the chance to take English exams to show what you have achieved. This is a good idea for your career and your studies, and can be helpful if you need to apply for a student visa later.

These courses are for career beginners. The course involves classroom-based learning and English teaching, followed with a work placement or internship and usually leads to a qualification.

Courses for teachers of English

Learning more is the best way to become a better teacher. These courses usually include creative teaching techniques, culture, and using technology in lessons as well as improving your language skills. Longer courses can lead to postgraduate qualifications.

If you need an English qualification at a certain level for a job or more studying these courses are worth considering. You will learn how to pass exams, and how to obtain high grades.

Foundation or Pathway courses

Academic courses in the UK

Thousands of students from all over the world fulfil their dreams every year by working for a UK academic qualification. Our universities and colleges are worldfamous, and our qualifications are recognised everywhere. But our education system can be confusing, so here is a quick guide to the institutions, courses and qualifications you may be considering. Remember that you will be studying in English.
A-Levels: These are the highest level L of academic qualification available in the school system for England and Wales. They are typically taken by 18 year olds at the end of a two year course. An A Level is split into two year long courses. The first year leads to an AS level (which is a qualification in its own right) and the second leads to A2. English and Welsh students applying for university places are usually studying A Levels. In Scotland, school students will study Highers instead. International students may take A Levels in private colleges, private schools, or in public colleges if they are from the European Economic Area. Undergraduate degree/First Degree/Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science/Honours degree: These are the different ways we describe a first university-level degree. It is usually studied at a university, higher education institution, or sometimes a public or private college. Most university courses in England, Wales and Ireland are three years long (though there are exceptions), but Scottish courses usually last four years. Masters qualifications/MA, MSc: This is the next level up from a first degree. Courses are usually for one or two years, and are in a subject related to the first degree or one which the student is considering for a doctorate. Masters courses are usually studied at a university. MBA: Masters in Business Administration courses are becoming very popular and are often taken by people after they have begun their careers. The UK is very well known for its world-class MBA courses, which are usually taught at business schools. MBA students often come direct from business or industry. Doctorate/PhD/DPhil: These are all research-based qualifications. The student must complete an original research programme. They will then write up their research, which will be examined by their universitys specialist panel. This is the highest level of qualification in the UK system.

Where can I take English examinations? Which exams can I take?

English language centres will usually offer you the opportunity to study for recognised qualifications. These are available at different levels and for different purposes. Some of the best-known qualifications are: Basic level: Key English Test Intermediate level: Preliminary English Test, BEC Preliminary Upper-intermediate level: First Certificate in English, BEC Vantage High level: Cambridge English: Advanced, BEC Higher Most advanced level: Certificate of Proficiency in English IELTS can be taken as an academic or general training exam and scores cover the full ability range. TOEFL exams also cover a wide ability range Pearson PTE exams are available from Foundation to Proficient

Why studying for a degree is still a great investment!

The sharp increases in undergraduate fees to be charged in the UK from September 2012 and proposals for tightening visa conditions, have led to a heated debate as to whether it is still worthwhile to study for a degree in the UK.
The average annual fees for UK and EU students are expected to rise from a current figure of just over 3,000 per annum to over 8,000 per annum, with many universities charging the maximum 9,000 fee, at least for some courses. Whilst there has been no major increase in fees for non-EU students, visa conditions have been tightened, for example while non-EU students will still be able to work in the UK for up to two years after graduation, they must now secure jobs which earn over 21,000 per year! Why then bother to study for a degree in the UK at all?! Fortunately for students and for UK universities there is considerable evidence to suggest that investing your time and money to study for a degree in the UK is still very much in your interest. Here are just some reasons why! The average graduate in the UK earns around 24% more than the average non-graduate with A-levels (or overseas equivalent), giving a net additional lifetime earnings to UK graduates of over 120,000. This average figure will vary from the course and subject you study. For example; Accounting graduates in the UK earn, on average, some 40% more than graduates in Arts subjects such as History, English or Geography. Even if you already have a professional qualification, combining this with a degree considerably increases your lifetime earnings. For example chartered accountants with a degree earn 23% more than chartered accountants without a degree, a difference of around 400,000 in gross earnings over a 45 year career. Where you study also matters! The London School of Economics has the highest average graduate salaries

12

International Student Guide

within six months of graduating, currently 30,932, followed by Imperial College (30,512) and University College London (26,304). However don't always assume the older universities with the highest status will necessarily give you the most income! Interestingly, London South Bank University graduates earn an average of 26,307 within six months of graduation; higher than Oxford (26,156) and Cambridge (24,529) Universities.

Master of Business Administration (MBA)

There is certainly good news for those having taken their MBA or who are about to begin their MBA studies, as is clear from the results of a major survey by the Financial Times of the experiences of MBA graduates in 2010, three years after completing their MBA studies (www.ft.com/businesseducation/mba2011).

How can I find out more?

Certainly in an era of higher fees, with the charges varying by university and by course, there is much to be gained by finding out as much as you can before you make your application or accept your offer! There is a growing range of online resources such as Bestcourse4me.com. They include such sources to help you make your choice, giving information on expected future income (and costs) for specific courses in specific institutions. You compare starting salaries, starting occupations and employment prospects across different universities and courses. Being better informed in an era of higher fees is obviously very much in your own interest! It may be useful at this point to give an example of the benefits of finding out more by using one particular and increasingly popular postgraduate course, namely the Master of Business Administration (MBA).

Three years after gaining your MBA you can, on average, expect the following.
Your salary to be an average of 90% higher than your salary in the year before taking your MBA To have achieved the four most important reasons identified by MBA students for choosing this course, namely: - Increased earnings - Enhanced management development skills - A change of employer or of career focus - Improved networking Higher status in terms of changed job title as compared to before starting the MBA 7 times as many MBA graduates had President/MD/CEO in their title 8 times as many MBA graduates had Director/Vice President in their title 3 times as many MBA graduates had Department Head or Senior Executive in their title The MBA has traditionally sought to produce well-rounded senior executives, able to understand and contribute to discussions on all aspects of organisational policy, including strategic direction, finance, marketing, human resource and operations management. However the curriculum of today's MBA is being shaped by increasing organisational awareness of the importance of a number of key themes, including corporate, social and ethical responsibility, environmental sustainability, developing alliances and collaborative behaviour, creative thinking and innovation.

write a personal statement

A personal statement is a vital part of your application, both to the university you wish to join and to the specific course you have chosen. Since many universities no longer interview those who apply, the personal statement is your best opportunity to demonstrate why the university and course should choose you! Almost all university courses have more applicants than places available, so make the most of this opportunity. Important Do's
Do make sure you meet (or are likely to meet) the minimum requirements of the university and course. Visit the university website to find out what these requirements are! Do be university and course specific! Make it clear why you are applying to this particular university and course. Identify aspects of the course that are of particular interest to you. Show that you have thoroughly researched the course and know what is involved. Give examples of your suitability for this course, eg performance in the subject area, work experience, conferences attended, assignments completed, etc. Show how taking the course fits with what you want to do in the future. Do provide evidence that you are reliable, responsible and socially concerned. Work experience, including part-time jobs held Voluntary, community and charity work Membership of clubs, societies and committees Leadership roles Prizes won Help given at school or college events/open days, etc. Do emphasize your personal skills and interests Sport and leisure activities, including musical instruments played Languages spoken IT skills developed Level of English reached (eg IELTS 6.0) Other interests and achievements Do look at some examples of personal statements (eg: www.worldstudysolutions.com )

HOW TO...

Important Dont's
Don't show poor preparation, eg: having little knowledge of the particular course you are applying for Don't try to be funny or make jokes Don't start lots of sentences with 'I' Don't write down lists or bullet points without further explanation Don't make political statements Don't use complex language that you are not comfortable with

Personal Statements and UCAS If you are applying to university using the UCAS online application form (there are no paper-based applications) then there are some extra things you need to remember.
No more than 4,000 characters can be used, including spaces. Use the 'word count' tool on your word processor to check No more than 47 lines can be used Creating a new line after typing 85 characters will help meet both limits Above all, try to be positive and interesting. You are telling the admissions tutor why he/she should choose you for that specific course. Pay particular attention to the start and the finish. The starting paragraph influences the first impression of your application, and the finishing paragraph is what is most likely to be remembered. The box below may help to structure your paragraphs and your overall personal statement.

5-PARAGRAPH STRUCTURE P
Paragraph 1: Paragraph 2: Paragraph 3: Introduction - Why I am applying for this course Why I am equipped to study this particular course Why I should be regarded as a reliable, responsible and socially concerned individual What other skills, interests and achievements I can evidence Conclusion - Why this particular course is relevant to my future development

Sightseeing in Cambridge
We know you'll be busy studying, so to save you time we've put together some of the top attractions in Cambridge. Enjoy!
The Round Church
(Pictured below right) The Round Church in Cambridge was built in 1130 after the first crusade. It is an impressive Norman building based on the Church of the Resurrection in Jerusalem, and one of only four round churches in England. Queen Victoria visited the church in 1843 after it had been redesigned by the architect Anthony Salvin. Old Cavendish Laboratories were at one time the most important scientific laboratories in the world. Founded with a donation of 6,500 by the University Chancellor, William Cavendish, the 7th Duke of Devonshire (back in 1874), the Laboratories have produced over 20 Nobel Prize winners! the architect Henry Hutchinson and completed in 1869. Spectacular student pranks have included punting a small car along the river Cam and suspending it from the Bridge of Sighs!

The Mathematical Bridge

(Pictured below left) One of many famous bridges spanning the river Cam, the Mathematical Bridge was designed by William Etheridge in 1748. The college paid just 21 for the design. The bridge was originally used to link the President's Lodge at Queens' with the former Fellows garden on the opposite side of the Cam. A river tour along the 'Backs' provides the visitor with exceptional views of this bridge.

Shopping
Cambridge has become a fantastic place for shopping with the recent redevelopment of its main shopping centre, the Grand Arcade. With easy parking and most shops undercover, this stylish mall boats designer shopping as well as larger department stores such as John Lewis, alongside high street favourites like TopShop, and New Look. You will easily find most things you are looking for; there is a supermarket (Sainsbury's) as well as two Marks and Spencers in the city centre. Across town, you'll also find the Grafton Centre - another complete shopping experience under one roof, housing larger department stores such as BHS and Debenhams, as well as a cinema, and plenty of places to grab a bite to eat while you take a break from shopping!

Eating out
Cambridge is a fantastic place for eating out. Whether you just want to grab a coffee and watch the world go by, or experience fine dining, there really is something for everyone. Why not sample a drink from Nusha - Cambridge's trendiest cocktail bar, before the cinema, or try fabulous pasta at Jamie's, in the heart of town. Or if you fancy al fresco dining head to Don Pasquale's, on the corner of the Market Square, for great pizzas, and other Italian delights. Or, if you like to experience good food with good music, head to CB2's on Norfolk Street, for live music, good home cooked food and a great wine list!

CAMBRIDGE

CAMBRIDGE

The Corn Exchange and the Arts Theatre, both in the heart of the centre have fabulous productions all year round, many of them touring here prior to a West End debut - guaranteeing quality. And then eat at Jamie's Italian, the Cambridge Chop House or the Varsity - all within a stone's throw.

CAMBRIDGE

Cambridge hasn't got the large selection of nightclubs that many other UK cities offer, but instead it is a city steeped in history reflected in its old pubs and restaurants. Because of the large student population there are also many student activities and performances from concerts to plays - visit one of the outdoor Shakespeare productions in August, or get along to the ADC theatre for Cambridge Footlights, where such stars as Emma Thompson and Stephen Fry started their careers! Cambridge also boasts a good selection of restaurants and bars, both in the city centre and by the river, or head to a pretty village such as Madingley or Grantchester, easily reached by bus or taxi for a fabulous meal and drinks with friends.

Welcome to Edinburgh
With so many things to do and see when you are not in the classroom you will find it hard to decide what to discover next! The UNESCO World Heritage site at the heart of the city combines the medieval Old Town, and the Georgian New Town as well as stunning modern architecture, giving the city the amazing feeling of ancient and modern, all in one, easy to get around, place. With fantastic attractions like Edinburgh Castle and the Camera Obscura, you are guaranteed to find something to interest you. But as well as the terrific city attractions, Edinburgh is in the midst of one of the world's most beautiful natural environments, with breathtaking scenery, coastline and mountain ranges all within easy reach. You can even get up to the Cairngorm mountains to go ski-ing! Edinburgh airport is served by low cost airlines such as Easyjet, and also has an extremely good railway station. The famous Loch Ness (will you be the one to see the famous monster?!), Loch Lomond, the Mull of Kintyre (made famous by Paul McCartney) and the Isle of Skye (read up on Bonnie Prince Charlie!) are all worth a visit. The city is also well-known for the annual events it hosts, including the Edinburgh International Festival, the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, a Hogmanay street party at New Year, and Burns Night. This means you are guaranteed great events whatever time of year you choose to study. With a population of five hundred thousand, plus, 1 million visitors, terrific language schools, and lots of students you won't be bored!

Oxford University is the UK's oldest University. Founded around 1167, it is the second oldest university in the world. Most undergraduate teaching at Oxford is organised around weekly tutorials at the self-governing colleges, and backed up by lectures and classes through the faculties or departments. There are thirty-eight colleges and six permanent private halls. Each controls its own membership and is responsible for its own internal structure and activities. In addition to residential and dining facilities, the colleges provide social and recreational activities for their members. The Colleges take responsibility for admitting undergraduates and organising their tuition; yet for graduates, this responsibility falls upon the departments and faculties.
