Sightseeing in Cambridge
We know you'll be busy studying, so to save you time we've put together some of the top attractions in Cambridge. Enjoy!
The Round Church
(Pictured below right) The Round Church in Cambridge was built in 1130 after the first crusade. It is an impressive Norman building based on the Church of the Resurrection in Jerusalem, and one of only four round churches in England. Queen Victoria visited the church in 1843 after it had been redesigned by the architect Anthony Salvin. Old Cavendish Laboratories were at one time the most important scientific laboratories in the world. Founded with a donation of 6,500 by the University Chancellor, William Cavendish, the 7th Duke of Devonshire (back in 1874), the Laboratories have produced over 20 Nobel Prize winners! the architect Henry Hutchinson and completed in 1869. Spectacular student pranks have included punting a small car along the river Cam and suspending it from the Bridge of Sighs!

Grasshopper Clock
The stunning Grasshopper Clock at Corpus Christi College was unveiled by Professor Stephen Hawking in September 2008. It was created by the inventor, Dr John Taylor, a former student and now an honorary Fellow at Corpus Christi College. The timepiece took five years to complete at a cost of 1million. This beautiful golden clock has been predicted to run for a further two centuries.

the University libraries. Designed by Giles Gilbert Scott and opened in 1934, the University Library is a copyright library that is entitled to a copy of every book that is published in the United Kingdom. If laid end to end, its current stock of 7 million books would stretch from Cambridge to Brighton on the south coast of England! Scott, was also responsible for designing the traditional red British telephone box, many of which are still visible in towns and villages throughout the UK. (The Library is closed to members of the public apart from access to various exhibitions throughout the year).

This area of the town would have been a building site at the time, with masons responsible for King's Chapel also working on Great St Mary's.The combination chimes on the clock tower were developed by Dr Jowett, a member of Trinity Hall in the 1790's, and were copied for the Westminster chimes at Big Ben in London. There are impressive views of the city and river from the top of the church tower which is open to the public at various times.

Shopping
Cambridge has become a fantastic place for shopping with the recent redevelopment of its main shopping centre, the Grand Arcade. With easy parking and most shops undercover, this stylish mall boats designer shopping as well as larger department stores such as John Lewis, alongside high street favourites like TopShop, and New Look. You will easily find most things you are looking for; there is a supermarket (Sainsbury's) as well as two Marks and Spencers in the city centre. Across town, you'll also find the Grafton Centre - another complete shopping experience under one roof, housing larger department stores such as BHS and Debenhams, as well as a cinema, and plenty of places to grab a bite to eat while you take a break from shopping!
Eating out
Cambridge is a fantastic place for eating out. Whether you just want to grab a coffee and watch the world go by, or experience fine dining, there really is something for everyone. Why not sample a drink from Nusha - Cambridge's trendiest cocktail bar, before the cinema, or try fabulous pasta at Jamie's, in the heart of town. Or if you fancy al fresco dining head to Don Pasquale's, on the corner of the Market Square, for great pizzas, and other Italian delights. Or, if you like to experience good food with good music, head to CB2's on Norfolk Street, for live music, good home cooked food and a great wine list!
27
CAMBRIDGE
CAMBRIDGE
The Corn Exchange and the Arts Theatre, both in the heart of the centre have fabulous productions all year round, many of them touring here prior to a West End debut - guaranteeing quality. And then eat at Jamie's Italian, the Cambridge Chop House or the Varsity - all within a stone's throw.
CAMBRIDGE
Cambridge hasn't got the large selection of nightclubs that many other UK cities offer, but instead it is a city steeped in history reflected in its old pubs and restaurants. Because of the large student population there are also many student activities and performances from concerts to plays - visit one of the outdoor Shakespeare productions in August, or get along to the ADC theatre for Cambridge Footlights, where such stars as Emma Thompson and Stephen Fry started their careers! Cambridge also boasts a good selection of restaurants and bars, both in the city centre and by the river, or head to a pretty village such as Madingley or Grantchester, easily reached by bus or taxi for a fabulous meal and drinks with friends.

Bookshops galore!
Cambridge is famous for its colleges and students so naturally bookshops abound. Visit the oldest bookshop site in the country at the University Press Bookshop, opposite the famous Senate House, or wander up the road to Heffers, opposite Trinity.
Going out
Life on the river
Cambridge is famous for its punting - travelling in a long low boat, steered by a long pole. Have a go yourself, or be in the safe hands of a chauffeur, whilst admiring the colleges along the 'Backs'.
Afternoon tea?
Take a punt or a stroll over the meadows to Grantchester the home of famous English Poet, Rupert Brooke. Enjoy tea in the leafy and beautiful Grantchester meadows before strolling back by the river to town.
28
Both the Arts Theatre and the Cambridge Corn Exchange are great venues to see famous faces, great gigs and classic plays. Or see what's on at the ADC theatre, home to the Cambridge Footlights and the stars of tomorrow!

Welcome to Edinburgh
With so many things to do and see when you are not in the classroom you will find it hard to decide what to discover next! The UNESCO World Heritage site at the heart of the city combines the medieval Old Town, and the Georgian New Town as well as stunning modern architecture, giving the city the amazing feeling of ancient and modern, all in one, easy to get around, place. With fantastic attractions like Edinburgh Castle and the Camera Obscura, you are guaranteed to find something to interest you. But as well as the terrific city attractions, Edinburgh is in the midst of one of the world's most beautiful natural environments, with breathtaking scenery, coastline and mountain ranges all within easy reach. You can even get up to the Cairngorm mountains to go ski-ing! Edinburgh airport is served by low cost airlines such as Easyjet, and also has an extremely good railway station. The famous Loch Ness (will you be the one to see the famous monster?!), Loch Lomond, the Mull of Kintyre (made famous by Paul McCartney) and the Isle of Skye (read up on Bonnie Prince Charlie!) are all worth a visit. The city is also well-known for the annual events it hosts, including the Edinburgh International Festival, the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, a Hogmanay street party at New Year, and Burns Night. This means you are guaranteed great events whatever time of year you choose to study. With a population of five hundred thousand, plus, 1 million visitors, terrific language schools, and lots of students you won't be bored!

University Parks
Located near a lot of language schools, the The University Parks consist of about 70 acres of parkland on the west bank of the River Cherwell, together with a 4 acre spur of land running towards the south. The Parks include sports areas and a large collection of plants and trees in landscaped surroundings. This is a great place to bring a picnic and relax from your studies.
Port Meadow
At 440 acres, Port Meadow is the largest area of common land in Oxford. Access to Port Meadow is via Walton Well Road or Aristotle Lane in the south or from Wolvercote in the north. It is a typical English flood meadow and is a favourite area for walking, with easy access from the city of Oxford. This is where the Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (aka Lewis Carroll) and the Reverend Robinson Duckworth rowed in a boat on July 4th 1862 up the river with three young girls Lorina, Alice, and Edith Liddell. While journeying slowly from Folly Bridge to near Godstow, Carroll began at their request to make up a magical story that later was expanded into 'Alice in Wonderland'.
Magdalen College
Magdalen provides some of the most picturesque sights in Oxford, with buildings that span its 550-year history and award-winning gardens.

Shopping
Oxford is a great place to shop. Crammed full of antique shops, and bookshops, as well as the famous high street names - everything is so close to each other, it's only ever a stroll away. Don't forget to visit the covered markets too, and if you're looking for souvenirs, compare prices at the many shops selling them on Broad Street. Or stay out of the rain in the Clarendon Centre where everything is under one roof.
Nightlife
Oxford has a great deal to offer both its students, residents and visitors in terms of nightlife. The whole 'town and gown' attitude of the past is on the way out, and although students enjoy the entertainment and bars their colleges offer, they are also a prime audience for the city centre nightlife, and ID is a must if you are studying here (to claim many discounts). Or why not make the most of the scenic riverside pubs and their gardens on a sunny evening - head to the river and settle in with friends and enjoy the view. Being a city steeped in history, the old pubs and taverns are well worth a visit for fine ales and good wines - drink in the atmosphere as well as the liquids, and immerse yourself in culture. It is also well worth visiting the independent cinemas and the theatres - they are plentiful here!
Eating out
You really are spoilt for choice in Oxford..you can go from a quick sandwich on the run to a complete fine dining experience. Or enjoy traditional English 'pub grub' in one of Oxford's many fine hostelries and inns. Chinese and Indian restaurants are plentiful, as are some well established chains, such as Pierre Victoire, Jamie's Italian and fast food outlets such as Burger King and KFC. You will never go hungry here!

University of Oxford
Oxford University is the UK's oldest University. Founded around 1167, it is the second oldest university in the world. Most undergraduate teaching at Oxford is organised around weekly tutorials at the self-governing colleges, and backed up by lectures and classes through the faculties or departments. There are thirty-eight colleges and six permanent private halls. Each controls its own membership and is responsible for its own internal structure and activities. In addition to residential and dining facilities, the colleges provide social and recreational activities for their members. The Colleges take responsibility for admitting undergraduates and organising their tuition; yet for graduates, this responsibility falls upon the departments and faculties.
