1. Introduction - What is Sanskrit?
-|| || sl| -|-|| (samyak kRutam iti saMskRutam) That which is done very well (refined) is called
Samskrutam. Samskrutam or Sanskrit, also referred to as 'devabhaasha', is a very ancient and complex language.
It's origin is older than the oldest of the languages. It is highly scientific, phonetic and linguistically advanced
language. There is culture, spiritual, moral, medical, mathematical, grammar, astronomy, architecture, art, drama,
poetry, humor and many other genre of literature in the language!! The variety, richness and depth of topics are
unsurpassed yet! The guru-s of the past, transcended knowledge to their pupil exclusively in Sanskrit.
The grammar is so intricate and complex like none other that, it is considered the most unambiguous language
that is suitable for programming computers even! Only, we need people very well versed in both computers and
Sanskrit.
It has been proven by research that the specialty of Sanskrit lays in its entirety. Just the reading, reciting and
speaking in Sanskrit, has proven to stimulate and active different energy points in the body that it provides an
overall wellbeing of that individual! It is one of the very few languages that use all the nerves of the tongue.
Speaking and reciting in Sanskrit, is like a cleanser for the tongue, I once heard! vaakshuddhi (clarity of speech),
comes very easily with this language.

2. Vocabulary:
Built over a period of time
Constant practice
Talking in the head
Substituting words from another language (if lost )
Skimming through the dictionary periodically
Observing the similarities between a language already known
Samskruta Kranti- Commencement to Spoken Sanskrit 2011

3. Pronunciation:
Example 1:
|| |l|
raamaH vadati.
|| ||l|
raamaH vadhati.
What an appalling difference in the meaning! Vadati means tells, vadhati means kills!! Now, is the message,
raama tells or raama kills?
Example 2:
|-|| ||
vasudaiva kuTumbakam|
The whole earth is itself a family.
|-|| ||
vasudeva kuTumbakam|
Mr. Vasudevs family.

4. Speaking and Understanding:
Comes with constant practice
Keeping the ears open
5. Reading and Writing:
It is best to read and write the language in its own script.
If not aware of the devanaagari script, reading a transliteration is okay. But then, one should learn the
transliteration rules correctly and know the corresponding pronunciations.
6. Sharpening the skills:
Practicing with peers
Speaking
Reciting and comprehending the meanings
Improving the vocabulary
Attending more classes
Once the cornerstone for the language is strong, any kind of architecture on it will automatically hold up!

vindhyaachalaH kiM karibhiH karoti |
shrIkhanNDakaNDaiH malayaachalaH kiM
paropakaaraaya sataaM vibhUtayaH ||
- subhaaShitaratnabhaaNDaagaara
Meaning of the subhAShita:
What will the ocean do with his own gems? What will the vindhyaa mountain do with the elephants (dwelling)
there? Of what use are the sandal trees to the malaya mountain? Wealth of the noble is for the benefaction of
others.
Samskruta Kranti- Commencement to Spoken Sanskrit 2011
www.e-gurukul.net | Ancient Scientific Knowledge Meets Modern Technology
Connotation:
Anyone will splurge their wealth on themselves. There is no greatness in that! An ocean is a store house of
multitudes of gems. But does he use even a single piece of rock to deck himself up! The vindhyaa mountain is the
house for many a herds of elephants. He doesn't direct them to work for his needs! There are sandal trees on the
malaya mountain like no other place. But the mountain doesn't have any use for it either!
Similarly, the noble do not obsess over their possessions, but put it use for the benefit of others. They neither have
any selfishness nor attachment towards their material possessions. 'The utility of their wealth for the right
purpose' takes more priority for them, than 'for whom it is being used'!
If you have much, give your wealth; if you have little, certainly give your heart :). There is never a scarcity for that!
Do anything heartily. The results will increase multifold.

Meaning of the subhAShita:
The teeth of a snake are poisonous, so is the bees head. The tail of a scorpion is poisonous whereas durjana (evil
doer) has poison in all parts of his body.
Connotation:
Animals have poison in different parts of their body as a mode of protection from their predators. They have it
only in a particular part of their body, like - a snake in its teeth, a bee in its head (the sting is located in its head)
and a scorpion in its tail. Also, they don't use it unless provoked. But an evil doer has poison in all parts, in the
sense that his thought, actions, words, intentions, etc are all poisonous. (Many a times, he doesn't even need to be
provoked). Beware of them!

Meaning of the subhAShita:
The adornment of the hand is giving; embellishment of the throat is the truth; enhancement of the ear is good
counsel (scriptures); what is the use/need for (other) ornaments?
Connotation:
To look pretty, one may consider decking themselves up with necklaces, bracelets, ear rings, toe rings, finger rings,
what else and what not! That is what is promoted (by the media) all around, in every which way possible. The
poet opines that these are futile and worthless. The true adornments are totally different!
The true adornment for a hand is not a shiny bracelet, but the act of giving. Giving something to the needy,
assisting someone in their hardships, extending a hand of assurance to someone in distress. The true act of giving
is done in discretion. It is not advertised to the world with cameras, photos and pictures. It is done with no
expectations in return either. That beautifies the hand.
The purpose of the throat or neck is not to hang a sparkling necklace around! Truth is the true embellishment for
the neck. How can one tell small white lies here and there, a couple big ones somewhere... and hope to achieve the
eternal purpose of life - the quest for truth!! Speaking the truth always is the very purpose of having a voice.
Samskruta Kranti- Commencement to Spoken Sanskrit 2011
www.e-gurukul.net | Ancient Scientific Knowledge Meets Modern Technology
Flashy ear rings may entice the eye from the outside. But the reason these sense organs were given to us was, to
perceive the scriptures. Listen to good counsel and put them to use. That enhances the both the presence and
purpose of the ears.
Beauty is skin deep. External ornaments can only beautify so much. Beautify the soul from the inside with these
true adornments and that lasts forever.

Transliteration:

Meaning of the subhAShita:
In a forest, in a battle, amongst enemies, amidst water or fire, in a vast ocean or on the tip of a mountain, while
asleep, awake or in danger - virtuous deeds from the past are the protectors.
Commentary:
As you sow, so shall you reap!
If one has performed virtuous deeds in the past, the fruit of those deeds will come to his rescue in times of trouble.
puNya (pure, holy deeds) is as if, it were a bank. If we have a positive balance, we could withdraw cash in times of
need. If it is already marked in red with a negative balance, there is no way that we can count on getting any
returns from that account.

When a person is facing any kind of calamities, natural or manmade, he does not have to worry about coming out
of the situation. His prior deeds of virtue will bring him out unscathed, at the end of the tunnel.
Keep the faith and do good to others!

Sanskrit Pearl to remember:
||
pustakasthaa tu yaa vidyaa parahastagataM dhanam |
kaaryakaale samutpanne na saa vidyaa na taddhanam ||
Meaning of the subhAShita:
Knowledge which is in the book, money which has passed on to another hand - in times of need, they are neither
(your) knowledge nor money.
Commentary:
Book knowledge is no knowledge. One can't claim the knowledge, that is in his book, as his own! In a time critical
situation, one can't refer to his book before acting. One's intellect should be the store house for his knowledge.
Only then can he proclaim mastery over that vidyaa. Similarly, one may be wealthy to the brim. But if he has
given away the possession, he can't claim it back because he needs it again.
Store thy assets where they belong. Or, they may not be thine in times of need!

- mahaabhaarata, udyogaparva
Meaning of the subhAShita:
A (student acquires a) quarter from the teacher, a quarter from his own intelligence, a quarter over time, a quarter
from classmates.
Commentary:
For one's learning, sources are many. He cannot rely just upon a teacher to prepare a potion of the lessons and feed
it to him all at once. The teacher's contribution to one's learning is only twenty five percent. The other twenty five
comes from the student's own interest and perceptions. The other quarter comes over time. Although one has
learnt by heart all the chapters and scriptures, new meanings shall dawn to him over a period of time. With age
and maturity come, a deeper understanding of the concepts learnt in grade school sometimes! The last quarter
comes from his fellow mates. Due to differences in perception, they might have a different outlook. That, many a
times gives insight into the topic in a different angle. Hence, even classmates contribute to one's learning.

Also, learning doesn't stop after graduation. Like the poet says, over time, they gain a quarter of the knowledge.
Learning is a constant process. Someone once said, I am learning all the time; my tombstone will be my diploma!
Anyone who stops learning is old; his chronological age doesn't matter. There is something new to learn every
day, if one pays attention. Learning is a treasure that follows its owner everywhere. Why not earn it with all effort!
