Executive Tutorial Objectives

Action Session Focus : Improve national network service level (increase availability, reduce network downtime, improve network troubleshooting and customer response time across multiple IT and operation teams. Action Learning Team: A cross-functional team of IT and Telecom operations managers A basic knowledge of IT & Telecom terminology is required, however, I will explain each new term as needed. Action Learning Team Goals Demystify telecom infrastructure and operations Bridge the knowledge and communication gap between IT and telecom operation teams Provide big picture of the wireless telecom architecture (how all these technologies fit together) Facilitate collaboration between teams (learn & work together)

BSS (Base Station Subsystem) Radio Handset/IMSI = Intl Mobile Subscriber Identity: Assigned MSISDN (Voice Telephone ID #) + IP (Data ID #) BSC (Base Station Controller): Responsible for radio cells management (cell handover, transmission power, etc.) GSM (Global Standard for Mobile Communication ) Voice HLR (Home Location Register): A central database of the subscribers (IMSIs) MSC (Mobile Switching Center): A voice call switch (sets up and connects calls). SMSC (Short Message Service Center): Sends/Receives short text messages via SMPP Gateway (another box not shown in diagram) GPRS (General Packet Radio Services) Data PCU (Packet Controller Unit): Responsible for handling user data packet traffic between the BSC and the SGSN SGSN (Server GPRS Support Node): Sits at the same hierarchical level as the MSC/VLR to perform data mobility management and manage the logical links to mobile terminals. SIG (SS7/IP Gateway): A gateway that translates between SS7 (voice) network and IP (data ) network communications GGSN (Gateway GPRS Support Node): Sits between the PLMN and external networks to provide border gateway functions such as security and accounting. (Will also work for other supporting servers like RADIUS, LDAP, DHCP, NAT, etc.)

Q&A
Qn 1: Are our IT & Telecom operations aligned with each other (org, process, tools) ? Qn 2: Do we have internal SLAs and tools that our measure the necessary business & technical metrics? Qn 3: Do we have plans to improve communication, collaboration and troubleshooting across multiple systems?
