ACCURACY VS. FLUENCY

Thornbury notes that speaking activities are often simply ways of rehearsing pre-selected grammar items or functional expressions (2005:28). Lewis claims that successful language is a wider concept than accurate language (2002:vi).

Exploit listening tasks to raise awareness of interactional speaking skills

APPROPRIATION
Phrase of the day The teacher puts a target phrase on the board and draws students attention to it. The task for students is to use the phrase in the appropriate context as many times during the lesson as it is possible.

AUTONOMY
Pre-text discussions The teacher puts a set of pre-text discussion questions on the board Warm-up conversation The teacher asks students some general personalized questions, e.g. So, how did you spend your weekend? or What are you going to do during the weekend?

SUMMARY
Balance fluency and accuracy, pay more attention to fluency. Exploit listening tasks to raise awareness of interactional speaking skills Encourage students to control the skill in practice e.g. phrase of the day Praise autonomy!
