1. Write brief descriptions of the following:

a) Galloping
b) Wake-induced oscillations.
Describe the measures taken to minimise the damages produced
due to them.

2. A 3 φ 750 KV horizontal line has a minimum height of 12m, sag at

midspan = 12m, phase spacing of 15m, conductors are 4 × 0.035m
dia with bundle spacing of 45.72 cm. Calculate per kilometre.
a) Matrix of Maxwell’s potential coefficients for an untransposed
configuration.
b) Inductance for untransposed and transposed configuration.

5. A 3 φ ac line and a bipolar dc line are used for power transmission.

The various dimensional details of the two systems are given
below.
3 φ ac line
Height of the phases above ground =13 m
Spacing between the phases = 11m
Radius of the conductors = 1.59 cm
Bundle spacing = 45 cm
Number of conductors per bundle = 2.
Bipolar dc line
Pole spacing = 9m
Number of conductors per bundle = 2
Radius of the conductors = 1.75 cm

If the operating voltage of the bipolar dc line is same as the

maximum line-to-line operating voltage of the 3 φ ac line, calculate:
a) Operating voltage of the dc line
b) Height of the dc line above the ground, if the maximum surface
voltage gradient of the dc line is 1.75 times the maximum
surface voltage gradient of the outer phases of 3 φ ac line.

6. Explain the following:

a) Charge-voltage diagram
b) Attenuation of travelling waves due to corona.

7. Derive the generalised constants for a transmission line under

power frequency conditions. How voltage control is done using
synchronous condensers.

8. Explain the need of static Var compensators. What are the different
schemes used to achieve this?
