TEACHING PROCEDURES
Objectives of the lesson should be written on the board. Tell the students the objectives of the lesson.
Teacher Strategies:
Teacher should:
-Say, "As we have learned from the past lesson, adjectives describe nouns. We also need some words to
describe verbs. The words that describe verbs are called adverbs."
-Ask students: What do you notice about the word adverb? (It has the word verb in it.) This is because it
describes verbs. An adverb tells us more about the verb it describes.
-Explain, we add "ly" to an adjective to form an adverb, e.g. nice, nicely. If the adjective ends in "y", we
remove the "y" and add "ily" (e.g. happy, happily).
-Give more examples (lucky, luckily).
-We have different types of adverbs, but we will only study one type today. It is called "Adverbs of manner"
(write it on the board).
-Explain to students that adverbs of manner tell us how something is done or how someone does something.
They usually come after the verbs they describe.
-Write some examples on the board. (How does Mohamed sit? He sits nicely. How does Nasser eat? He eats
quietly.)
-Write some adverbs on the board. (Ask students to offer some adverbs with your help and list them on the
board, e.g. slowly etc.)
-Help students compose sentences using these adverbs. The teacher uses an adverb in a sentence as a model
(e.g. The tortoise walks slowly.), then asks the students to orally compose sentences using other adverbs.
-Underline the adverbs in each sentence (or write them in a different color).
Student Activities:
The first activity is group work; the second one is to be done individually.
Modifications/Differentiation:
- For students with special needs or language difficulties, teacher will use pictures to explain the lesson, if it is
still hard for them, she can explain in Arabic.
- Using peer assistance can be an alternative.
- The early finisher can write sentences including adverbs of manner.
Lesson Extension:
Students can play "Adverbs game". Two groups play against each other. Each group is given all A-3 sheets
of paper with a table of adjectives and adverbs. They will need to find the missing adjectives or the adverbs to
complete their tables.
Closure:
The teacher and the students will summarize the lesson:
-Let's look at the objectives of the lesson, today we learned about adverbs. Tell me what an adverb is and what
it describes (an adverb is a word that describes the verb; it tells us more about the verb).
- Tell me what is an adverb of manner (adverbs of manner tell us how someone does something or how
something is done, it describes the verb).
- How do we change adjectives into adverbs (we add "ly" or" ily")?
- What adverbs can we form using the adjectives angry and beautiful (angrily, beautifully)?
- Tell students that they will study in detail other types of adverbs.
Assessment:
Through the closure, "Matching Game", and the worksheets teacher should be able to assess student's
comprehension.
