ABSTRACT

Sign Language is a visual language based on hand gestures. Deaf people or

dumb people use sign language to communicate with each other .Normal people don’t
understand sign language ,hence they cannot interpret the signs .However, normal people who
communicate using speech cannot convey the information because they don’t know the sign
language. Hence, there is a need to develop a system that converts the sign language to speech.

The main purpose of the project is to bridge the communication gap between a
normal person and hearing impaired. This project intends to design a useful and fully
functional real-world product that efficiently translates the movement of the fingers from Sign
Language to Speech.

Signs are interpreted using a smart glove. This glove contains sensors which
map different hand positions (i.e. signs).Output from sensors is given to a small circuit which
converts the mapped hand positions to corresponding text. This circuit is interfaced to
computer in which Matlab converts the text to corresponding speech .The product also acts as
sign language tutor which helps anyone to learn sign language easily.
