The issue of indigenisation needs to be addressed if knowledge production and

development are to progress. Firstly, there is a need to address the tension and hostility
between social work educators and practitioners. Secondly, though there is a lot of
literature in the core subjects such as casework, group work and community
organisation, there are very few contemporary indigenous texts on these subjects. Most
schools still refer to the old Western texts for these subjects. One strategy to address
these issues could be to form a small core group of educators trained in editing and
writing skills who could then be available to practitioners, who are burdened with
their day-to-day (service) work. Another strategy could be for a teacher to teach a core
course for several years (five to six years) and during this period, document the teaching
material, thus producing indigenous texts.
There is also a need to change from scientism to people-centeredness in journals
of social work. People’s knowledge that is the ‘emic’ perspective is most essential. A lot
of indigenous knowledge, such as kathas and folklore will be lost, if it is not documented
and disseminated. There is very little being done today to document and disseminate
such indigenous knowledge. There is also a need to focus on unpublished NGO material
which is not printed, but which is very useful for knowledge production. Some other
indigenous sources from which social work knowledge can be produced and developed
by institutions of social work education are :
- Dialogue/discussion between social work and allied disciplines, academicians,
practitioners and activists to generate areas of research for long-term partnership.
- Adaptation of knowledge from social sciences for social work.
- Student’s field work assignments and practice-based research.
- Validation of theories/models of intervention through action research.
