BOLLARD PULL TEST PROCEDURE

0. Purpose
This test procedure describes the guidance for bollard pull test on PT.ASL Shipyard Indonesia to
the intended safe & proper operating condition as required.

2. Reference Documents
∼ Class
Requirements & Guidelines;
• ABS
Rules for Building and Classing Steel Vessel under 90 meters (295 feet) in Length, Part
5 Chapter 8 Section 6: Tests.
• ABS
Rules for Building and Classing Steel Vessel under 90 meters (295 feet) in Length, Part
5 Chapter 8 Appendix 2: Guidelines for Bollard Pull Test Procedure.
• And
or other Class requirements/guidelines if applicable.

3. Safety
All personnel engaged in testing shall be informed about the risks and consequences of wire
(steel wire rope or nylon) failure and keep stay aware during testing.
Test data reading should be easily read from a safe location or a remote readout.

4. Equipments
a. 1(one) set calibrated load cell (dynamometer):
1. Load cell: LEPS Model/Type: TLC150T s/n:712701 cap.150T, wireless module/reflector.

5. Test Procedure

5.1. Test Condition Requirements

1. The bollard pull test should be held in a location of reasonably sheltered from wind, current,
tide and wave.
2. Wind speed should be 10 knot or less, or such that it does not measurably affect the bollard
pull result.
3. Sea condition should be calm, current speed should be 1 knot or less in any direction.
4. The depth of water under the keel in testing area should be at least 2x vessel draft at
amidship (D).
5. Towline length should be at least 2x ship length (LOA).
6. Vessel should be on even keel or trimmed to the intended operating condition in tow.
7. The draft of towing vessel should be equal to or deeper than ballast condition, but
need not be down to the summer load line mark.

5.2. Test Preparation

Re-check all load cell units; load cell, load cell telemetry, data logger & LEPS program in laptop,
ensure all equipments in proper connection, sufficient power & function able.
Load cell installation, fitted load cell in suitable horizontal position with 2 bolt & nut shackles,
in 2 ways: to the bollard (fixed point) and to towing vessel wire rope (tow hawser), by secure
connections.
Observe the load cell position in suitable condition in way vessel movement during testing, not in
twisting position, free from other objects what obstruct load cell capabilities.
Check & record the towing vessel draft condition: fore, amidship & after.
Check & record sea water density & temperature.

5.3. Bollard Pull Testing

1. Move the towing vessel to the required position that describe in 5.1.

Towline length = 2 x LOA

Water depth under keel = 2 x D amidship

2. Smoothly extend wire rope to avoid instantaneous spike tension load reading and maintain
towing vessel in steady condition.
3. 1(one) unit Telemetry Indicator should be placed on bridge for load reading reference
onboard.
4. Gradually increased main engine load to maximum continuous rpm (MCR 100%), the
operating condition for bollard pull test measurement and or other required condition
(MCR 50%, 75% & 110%) if applicable.
5. Continuous load cell reading from ashore should be informed to the onboard bollard pull test
officer for reference to determining vessel steady condition with continuous steady tension
load reading indication.
6. Confirmation is required from onboard bollard pull test officer to the ashore officer to start
measurement & recording the tension load reading. Onboard officer should be said
“Start recording now!” on the radio communication to command measurement starting.
7. When onboard confirmation is accepted, the ashore officer should be send a response
by said “Start recording now!” and push the “Start Log” button displayed on the computer,
it is load tension recording begin.
8. Duration of bollard pull test measurement is 5~10 minutes or other duration if applicable.
9. Load tension reading displayed as long measurement duration should be informed
continuously to the onboard by ashore officer.
10. When measurement completed, the ashore officer should be informed to onboard officer by
said “Completed recording!” and push the “Stop Log” button displayed on the computer, it is
load tension recording ended.
11. Testing condition when tension load recording should be recorded by onboard officer and
informed to ashore officer for documentation, i.e.:

Wind speed

Current speed

Towline length

Water depth under keel

5.4. Recording & Documentation
