HWK SET #7
Assigned the week of Apr 4, 2011 Due Apr 12, 2011

Problem #1 Go to the interweb and download a pump characteristic curve for a

real live industrial pump.
2. How much power (not energy) is consumed in the hydraulic jump described in
HWK Problems #3.3a and #3.3b ?

From Problem 3a:

Q= 35 cfs Given
Delta E = 0.81 ft Given
gamma = 62.4 lbs/ft3 KBH

1769. P = gamma Q
P= 04 ft-lbs/sec H
horsepow 1 hp = 550
3.216 er ft/ls/sec

From Problem 3b:

Q= 35 cfs Given
Delta E = 2.36 ft Given
gamma = 62.4 lbs/ft3 KBH

5154. P = gamma Q
P= 24 ft-lbs/sec H
horsepow 1 hp = 550
9.371 er ft/ls/sec
3. Determine the flowrate of a water pump that overcomes an energy head of 52
ft. A 600 kW motor drives the pump. The motor efficiency is 70% and the pump
efficiency is 80%.

1 kW = 1.341 hp and 1 hp = 550 ft-lbs/sec.

Power from motor to pump = 600 kW ( 0.70 efficiency ) = 420 kW

at 1.341 hp/kW = 563.22 hp

at 550 ft-lbs/sec per hp = 309,771 ft-lbs/sec

Power from the pump to the water = 309,771 ft-lbs/sec (0.80efficiency) =

247,816.8 ft-lbs/sec

Rearrange the Hydraulic Power Equation:

P = Ύ Q H to solve for Q:

Q = ( 247816.8 ft-lbs/sec ) / ( 62.4 lbs/ft3 )(52 ft) = 76.37 cfs

4. Given a pump with the following performance characteristic:

a) Develop a graph of the performance curve for two pumps in series.
