PASTEURELLA

Pasteurella multocida
 Gram-negative, non-motile
Coccobacilli
 Aerobic and facultatively AnO2
 A parasite of domestic and wild
animals
 May infect man >> after dog bite
 Do not grow on MacConkey agar
Pathogenesis
 A local abscess at the site of dog or
cat bite, with cellulitis, adenitis and
osteomyelitis (sometimes)
 Meningitis following head injury
 Infection of the respiratory system
>> penumonia, bronchitis etc…
Laboratory Diagnosis
 Specimen
– Swabs from bite wounds
– CSF from cases of meningitis
– Secretions from suppurative respiratory tract
infections
 Culture
– Blood agar
 Identification
– Cultural and Biochemical tests
Treatment
 Penicillin, Tetracycline,
Erythromycin, TMP-SMZ
 Osteomyelitis following dog or cat
bite >> 8 weeks treatment
