Do not grow on MacConkey agar
Pathogenesis
A local abscess at the site of dog or
cat bite, with cellulitis, adenitis and
osteomyelitis (sometimes)
Meningitis following head injury
Infection of the respiratory system
>> penumonia, bronchitis etc…
Laboratory Diagnosis
Specimen
– Swabs from bite wounds
– CSF from cases of meningitis
– Secretions from suppurative respiratory tract
infections
Culture
– Blood agar
Identification
– Cultural and Biochemical tests
Treatment
Penicillin, Tetracycline,
Erythromycin, TMP-SMZ
Osteomyelitis following dog or cat
bite >> 8 weeks treatment
