Fuselage structure

• Five stress act on it

• 1. tension
• 2. compression
• 3. bending (a) on wing spar (interior structural member).
(b) lower side tension, upper side compression.
. 4. shear (a) on rivets and bolts.
5. torsion (a) due to engine on crankshaft or turbine axis.
The wings
• Wings should hold its shape under extreme stress.
• Spars  carry all wing load.
Air force skin ribs spars.
• Mainly wings have two spar. (front, rear)
• As load increases wings may have as many as 5
spars.
• Ribs support covering and provide airfoil shape.
Empennage (tail assembly)
• Main purpose is to give stability to aircraft..
• Horizontal stabilizer prevent airplane from pitch
up or down.
• Elevator movable airfoil, controls up and down
motion of aircraft’s nose.
• Vertical stabilizer
(a) used to prevent aircraft from yawing back and forth.
(b) also used to offset tendency of aircraft to roll in
opposite direction in which propeller is rotating
• Rudder used to turn aircraft.
Propeller

• Convert rotational motion into thrust.

• Pressure difference create at forward and rear surface.

• Two types (a) fixed pitch propeller. ( Bernoulli’s principal)

(b) variable pitch propeller. (climb performance and fuel efficiency,
controlled by throttle and prop control both)

. Prop control changing angle of propeller blade.

Why we are using balsa wood.

• Light in weight.
• Withstand at high speed.
• Best strength to weight ratio.
• Easily shaped, glued and painted.
• Non-toxic and it can absorb shock and vibrations also.
• Cheaper than aluminum.
• Fastening of aluminum pieces is difficult.
