Lesson Title: Growing Plants

Application Notes:

This range of activities is a useful summary task that

pupils can complete towards the end of their work on
the QCA SOW on Growing Plants (1b).

The plant parts labelling application is a simple to use

science vocabulary exercise. Label words are simply
dragged and dropped into the correct place in the
diagram. When all words have been placed the user
clicks on the check button to get feedback on their
selection. If the plant has been labelled correctly
positive feedback is given and a secondary task about
identifying the factors needed to support growth is
undertaken. If the picture is incorrectly labelled then
the user returns to the diagram to try a different
arrangement.

Sound support is given on the plant diagram to

develop pupil’s sight vocabulary.

Class: Subject: Science

Pupils use a plant parts wordbank to label a diagram. Supports work in Year 1.

Why ICT is appropriate: Allows open exploration and supports pupils to work more independently.

Resources Required: Plant part files and Multimedia PC

Pre-requisite knowledge/skills/understanding: Basic mouse control skills, word recognition skills and
understanding of vocabulary used.

Learning Objectives taken from the QCA Science SOW

program. • Outcome : identify the parts of a plant

Plenary: Share the printouts made by the pupils. The teacher checks the children’s understanding by
asking questions to get children to indicate location of
named parts of the plant, what they need to grow and
any other facts established.

Assessment Strategy:

Mainly through observation and questioning – a printout of the pupils work can be kept as a record of
achievement.
