PREFACE

Turkish Basic Course, Units 31-50, is the second of a projected

three-volume patterns

series

being produced not covered

by the Foreign Service Institute.

It presents expanded

the principal

grammatical

of Turkish

in the first volume, with a vocabulary

by some 2,000 items.

This is essentially a new text, although it occasionally draws on earlier draft versions of FSI Turkish materials. Basic dialogues and structure drills, familiar in form from the first volume, are supplemented with exercises which are designed to lead the student into freer conversation. Narrative pa.uages serve as an introduction to the style of written Turkish and enrich the vocabulary control of the course. An effort has been made to keep current with rapidly changing language usage in Turkey.

The glossary, about 2,500 items, is cumulative for the first and second volumes. Certain conventions common to good dictionaries have been adopted to help students progress toward intelligent use of such works. The composition of all the Turkish part of the text has been the work of Selman N. AKral., Turkish instructor. Lloyd B. Swift, Assistant Dean of the School of Language Studies, has overseen the organization and provided the grammar notes. Mrs. Berit Fletcher assisted with some of the earlier units and Mrs. Uzma Alral., although not an FSI staff member, was of great assistance to her husband. particularly in checking current usages. The typescript was prepared by Mrs. Irma C. Ponce. The tapes to accompany this text were recorded in the FSI studios. In general, but not absolutely invariably, the passive in Turkish is used Thus where we say in English: 'I was taught.' the 'It was taught to me.'

Perhaps the most common use of this verbal noun is with possessed suffix indicating the performance of the action by a certain person or other performer - before laz1m 'is necessary', and before verbs like istemek 'to want' and soylemek 'to say' before which verbs, of course, the possessed verbal noun He wanted me to go there at once.
