Passive Voice
In passive sentences, the object of an active sentences becomes a subject of the
passive sentence.

For example

Active : a. Dian helps the students in the classroom.

S Verb Object Adverb

Passive : b. The students are helped by Dian in the classroom.

S Verb by phrase Adverb

“The students” in (a) becomes the subject of the passive sentence in (b). (a) and (b) have the
same meaning. Only transitive verbs (verbs that are followed by an object) are used in
passive sentences. It is not possible to use verbs such as : cry, sleep, come (intransitive
verbs).

Present continuos tense

Formula

Active :

(+) Subjects + (is , am , are) + verb-ing + object + adverb

(-) Subjects + (is , am , are) + not + verb-ing + object + adverb

Passive :

(+) S + (is , am , are) + being + verb-3 + by phrase + adverb

(-) S + (is , am , are) + not + being + verb-3 + by phrase + adverb

Example :

1. The book is being read by the boy. (passive voice)

The boy is reading the book. (active voice)


2. She's being hugged by her brother. (passive voice)

Her brother is hugging her. (active voice)

Simple Present Tense

Formula

Active :

(+) Subject + verb-1 + object + adverb

(-) Subject + (does not / do not) + verb-1 + object + adverb

Passive :

(+) Subject + (am, is , are ) + verb-3 + by phrase + adverb

(-) Subject + (am, is , are ) + not + verb-3 + by phrase + adverb

Example

1.Active    : He meets them everyday.

Passive  : They are met by him everyday.

2.Active    : She waters this plant every two days.

Passive  : This plant is watered by her every two days.


Simple Past Tense

Formula

Active

(+) Subjects + verbs-2 + object + adverb

(-) Subjects + did not + verb-1 + object + adverb

Passive

(+) Subject + (was/were) + verb-3 + by phrase + adverb

(-) Subject + (was/were) + not + verb-3 + by phrase + adverb

Example

1.Active    : He met them yesterday

Passive  : They were met by him yesterday

2.Active    : She watered this plant this morning

Passive  : This plant was watered by her this morning

Past Continuos Tense

Formula

Active

(+) Subject + (was/were) + verb-ing + object + adverb

(-) Subject + (was/were) + not + verb-ing + object + adverb


Passive

(+) S + (was/ were) + being + verb 3 + by phrase + adverb

(-) S + (was/ were) + not + being + verb 3 + by phrase + adverb

Example

1.Active    : He was meeting them yesterday.

Passive  : They were being met by him yesterday.

2.Active    : She was watering this plant in the garden.

Passive  : This plant was being watered by her in the garden.

Present Perfect Tense

Formula

Active

(+) Subject + (has/have) + verb-3 + obejct + adverb

(-) Subject + (has/have) + not + verb-3 + object + adverb

Passive

(+) S + (has /have) + been + verb-3 + by prahse + adverb

(-) S + (has /have) + not + been + verb-3 + by prahse + adverb

Example

1.Active    : She has watered this plant for 5 minutes.

Passive  : This plant has been watered by her for 5 minutes


2. Active : Alif has sung many songs this year

Passive : Many songs have been sung by Alif this year

Simple Future Tense

Will or Shall

(+) S + (will/shall) + verb-1 + object + adverb

(-) S + (will/shall) + not + verb-1 + object + adverb

Be going to

(+) S + (is,am,are + going to) + verb-1 + object + adverb

(-) S + (is,am,are + not + going to) + verb-1 + object + adverb

Passive

Willl or shall

(+) S + (will/shall ) + be + verb-3 + by phrase + adverb

(-) S + (will/shall ) + not + be + verb-3 + by phrase + adverb

Be going to

(+) S + (is,am,are + going to) + be + verb-3 + by phrase + adverb

(-) S + (is,am,are + not + going to) + be + verb-3 + by phrase + adverb


Example

1.Active    : He will meet them tomorrow.

Passive  : They will be met by him tomorrow.

2.Active    : She will water this plant this afternoon.

Passive  : This plant will be watered by her this afternoon.

3.Active    : The farmers are going to harvest the crops next week

Passive  : The crops are going to be harvested by the farmers next week.
