Abstract
The project is entitled as "Book store management system". It uses VB.NET as the
platform. It allows the user to exploit the services offered. It is an e-form of the already
existing manual system where all activities are performed without or little machine
intervention.

To use this facility each user should have their username and the password registered.
User name is the name of the user and password is a unique alpha-numeric key. As Book
store management system is built using the VB.NET platform, it maintains a secured database
for recording the user's transaction details.

Book store uses today's computer technology to give their customer the option of
bypassing the time-consuming, paper based aspects of traditional banking in order to manage
the transactions between the customers and the book store more quickly and efficiently. It is
very user friendly and interactive, user feel more comfortable working with the services.
Once registered user can adopt all the services offered by logging-in to the application with
their user name and the password.

A new user can also switch to this online form of Book store by registering with their
details.
INTRODUCTION
The application "Book store management system" is going to be developed using
Microsoft's VB.NET technology platform, which is a very convenient tool for designing and
developing web applications.

The development of "Book store management system" once again depicted that both
the technology and business organizations can work hand in hand. The application has a fully
integrated customer database. Sales or purchase on the Internet enables customers to use a
whole variety of products, from PCs on desks in the office and at home to consumer devices
such as Mobile phones and PDAs.

The customer profile fits Book store management system perfectly. Customers are
typically busy; they travel a great deal and need access to the Book stores.

Security is always a major issue with the Web Applications and the "Book store
management system" surely provides very high security as it is going to be developed using
the Microsoft's .NET technology which is a secured platform for building multi-tier web
applications. It works very fast as compare to its' Corner branch stores.

To utilize the services offered by the "Book store management system" user must
have the PC connected to Internet. "Book store management system is specially targeted for
Retailers and distributors where customers can purchase books and pay the bills etc.

Various factors result the growth in Online shopping, such as competitive cost,
customer service, and demographic considerations - are motivating Book stores to evaluate
their technology and assess their electronic commerce and Internet strategies.

Book store management system is divided into the following modules

1. Purchase

2. Sales

3. Customer

4. Employee

5. Authentication

6. Reports

Purchase: In these module transactions such as placing an order for the books from other
distributors is accomplished. Book store executive will look up the required books and can
place an order for them. Number of copies, author, title and price for each copy will be sent
back by the book provider.
Sales: This activity will store and maintain the information regarding the books which are
sold. Sale as well as the mode of payment has to be specified such as credit or cash.

Customer: Regular customer’s information will be made available instead of entering the
details every time and hence avoiding redundancy. New customer’s information can also be
added easily.

Employee: Employee's information that belongs to the Book store will be made available in
the database in a way to manipulate the employee tasks. Employee information includes name
of the employee, basic salary, age etc

Authentication: User login and password are managed by this module. New user can register
for their account, and existing user can change their passwords and manage their accounts.

Reports: Output reports in the form of pages or in the form of computer files can be
generated whenever necessary. Getting reports is very easy using Computer Applications and
is also very fast.
SYSTEM ENVIRONMENT

The Book store user information are stored and manipulated in a highly secured way. The
RDBMS furnishes the privileges where the data are organized in tables consisting of rows
and columns. As Book store is developed using VB.NET technology, data is much secured
while accessing and updating. There are several RDBMS packages existing, among them MS
SQL SERVER satisfies all the security features, and opted MS SQL SERVER as back end,
and VB.NET as the front end tool in Windows environment.

1. SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS

Front end VB.NET

Back End MS SQL SERVER
Operating System MS Windows 2000, NT 4.0 or XP
Web server IIS

Web Client Web browser

2. HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS

Here are the minimum requirements for running the .NET Framework and Visual
Studio.NET are

Processor Intel Pentium processor; 450 MHz or equivalent

processor
RAM 128MB of available RAM

Hard disk 3GB of available disk space

Monitor Color monitor capable of 800 × 600 resolution

SYSTEM STUDY

THE PROJECT LIFE CYCLE

The development life cycle of a project usually involves three phases

1. Project initiation

2. Project execution

3. Project completion

In the project initiation phase, the phase result the project plan and finalizes the
outcome of each phase. In this phase, the preparations of comprehensive list of tasks are
finalized. The actual development of the application is involved in the project execution
phase.

EXISTING SYSTEM

Considering the existing system as the manual system, the transactions take place
manually. The book store keeps the different ledgers, files for maintaining different accounts
and rates are calculated manually, during the transaction the amount is added or deducted
manually depending on the type of transactions. Finally the daily or monthly transaction
information is to be submitted to the administrator.

DRAWBACKS OF THE EXISTING SYSTEM

MANUAL WORKING:

1. In the existing system data are maintained manually in ledgers and files,
which use lots of space to keep the records of customers and books for
long time.
2. More resources and materials are required
3. Delayed execution of the process. The existing system takes a lot of time
for its processing.
4. Non availability. Existing system or the corner book store is not always
available for the customers.
5. Only one or few customers can be served at one time. The main drawback
of existing system is, it can serve only one or few customers at one time.
6. Redundancy of data. As information passes through different registers,
each register is consolidated and sent to next register. So the same
information is being tabulated at each register, which involves lot of
complication and duplication in work, thus it causes redundancy.
PROPOSED SYSTEM

Need of Computer-based information system:

As long as there are small and have limited operational goals manual information
systems are satisfactory. Many trends in the development of technology and commerce have
made computer-based information systems essential to efficiently run organizations. These
are

1. The size of the organization is becoming larger, particularly countries with increase in
population and rapid rate of industrial development.

2. Computer-based processing enables the same data to be processed in many ways,

based on needs, thereby allowing managers to look at the performance of any
organization from different angles.

3. As the volume of data has increased and the variety of information and their
timeliness is now of great importance. Computer-based information processing has
now become essential for efficiently managing organizations.

4. Book stores are now distributed with many branches.

5. Markets are becoming competitive.

Book store management system helps to overcome from the drawbacks of the existing
paper based system. As it executes on the Internet it can be used to access financial
applications which are available on the Internet.

BENEFITS OF THE PROPOSED SYSTEM

1. Convenience: Unlike manual processing, online Book store system never

closes. It is available 24X7. It is just only a mouse click away.
2. Ubiquity: If customer is out of state or even out of the country when there
will be a requirement for placing an order, they can log on instantly to
their Book store system and take care of the business.
3. Higher transaction speed: Online Book store system executes and confirm
transactions at or quicker than manual processing.
4. Efficiency: Customer can manage and access all of their account details.
5. Online bill payment: Online bill payment is easier and less expensive than
generating and mailing a paper check. User can pay their bills online.
That is not true in the existing manual system.
6. Cost benefit: Using the services offered by the online Book store system
it is less expensive.
7. Secured: Online Book store system customer details are maintained with
higher security features.
