%6 Transactions of the Lodge Quatuor Coronati A SYMBOLICAL CHART OF 1789. RO. W. G. P. GILBERT, P.M. of the Phennix Lodge, No. 257, has kindly lent ua a curious old Chart, of which the annexed plate is « very slightly reduced facsimile, Te was given to him by Bro. B. W. Bradloy, the Senior Past Mastor of the Lodge. ‘Tho dato, “Published as the act directs, London, 1789” will be found just above the rect- ‘angular baso in the lower left hand portion. ‘This same design, somewhat larger, was republished, December 27th, 1813, by Jno. Postal Ais Suse Stocy Charing Gran” Treontatve, hoveven the follwing adlcons ‘At the top, the well-known Rose Croix jewel between tho title ‘The Mysterious Mirror of ‘Wisdom’ in Latin to the left, and in English on tho right. Below, in a double circle, “Union of the Ancient and Modern Masons ® enclosing interlaced triangles, on which is the date “ Dect: 27, 1813,” with o triangle, resplendent sun, etc,, im tho contre, " Also stretching crs the whol shott the dedication ont Rappectflly Dodiostad to all Loyel Brethren ‘on the Late Happy Union.” ‘The Rev. Bro. Oliver reproduced this later design in bis *"Rovelations of a Square,” 1845. * = ‘The publication of this Chart in 1789 is remarkable, becanso it contains allusions to several degrees which, as far as I can ascertain, have nover becn current in England at all. ‘Tho duplicate title in French, and the French form of some of the words written in cypher, point also to. Continental crigin, and I should not be surprised to leara that it is simply English version of some plate which had found favour in France. But its republication fand special dedication in 1613 fs more remasable stil, not only for the above raooe, but because Grand Lodge had just decreed that Freemasonry consisted of threo degrees and no ‘more, not one of which is correctly typified by any of the aquares figured on the Chart. According to Dr. Oliver, in the abore mentioned work, “The first square, beginning at the top, is tho Carpet or Floorcloth of the Degree of Knights of the Bast and West, surrounded by the letters B. D. 8. H. P. F. G., which signify Beauty, Divinity, Strength, Honoar, Power, Videlity, Glory. "The second, on the left hand, represents the Birth of Light from Darknoss ; the next contains tho emblems of the Degree of the Rose Croix ; and tthe fourth is an allegorical representation of the Order of Harodim. ‘The fifth is tho Brato Stone (our Rough Ashlar) symbolizing the elements of Bluo Masonry. Then we havo the Arches of Enoch, as illastrative of the ‘of the Knights of tho Ninth Arch; and after it the Cubical Stone (Perfect Ashlar), which, according to a legend at the foot, contains the Sacred Name; and last of alla diagram of the Degree of Prussian Kuights, or Noachites: and in the lower spandrela are vestiges of the Spurious Freemasonry."” ‘The inventor has taken much pains to render the cypher used dificult of compreben- sion, for he has employed no les thea four eipbabets, ‘This haa caused mo some trouble, which however has not proved insurmountable. In the top corner he bas obligingly furnished a key, and a little way down on each upright band may bo discovered drawing of a key. Beginning from tho key on tho left hhand sido with the cypher >, which representa A, wo have the first, half of the alphabet, ABCDEFGHIR LM and in the right column, beginning with L (which represents N) wo hare NOP QRS TV WXYZ. This alphabet corvenponds, with tho key inthe ‘corners, but i not made use of in the rest of the Chart. It is simply a blind. The legend on the base requires a totally different key, and reads “ And wil Ihim a white stoue and a now namo which no maa kooweth it T'mal name of the city and write my new name divinity support morality.’ Yor the inscriptions at the top and sides the key is in the eamo sequence as the first described, only it ogine at tho right hand ido, . L = A. and eo on to Mf, and then > fand goon to Z. This trouble. In the squares a fourth key has been mac ABDEFGHHILMNOPSTV BVv
