Warfield Freshman English Test Preparation Tips

On the next Block day (Wednesday, Feb. 16 or Thursday, February 17) you will take a test on
Academic Vocabulary #6 (symbols and allegory) and the last two short stories that we have read.
This test will consist of the following material:

Part 1: Multiple Choice questions on the following:

• “The Scarlet Ibis”
• “The Golden Kite, the Silver Wind”
• Terms (and their definitions) from Academic Vocabulary #6

Part 2: In-class essay on the following question:

Using the 5-paragraph essay format, write an essay addressing the following:

Explain how the scarlet ibis is a symbol for Doodle. Give at least three (3) specific reasons
(examples) from the story to support your answer. You MUST refer to specific passages and give
page numbers where these passages are found in order to earn a passing score.

How to prepare for this exam: You will be given a 3 x 5 index card on which you
may include anything that will help you on the exam. BE AWARE: I am asking for
specific quotes and page numbers from the story “The Scarlet Ibis”, so I would expect
that your card would contain the passages (quotes) that you will be using in your essay.

You WILL NOT be allowed to use the textbook during the exam, so writing down (at a
minimum) your quotes is ESSENTIAL for earning better than a “C” on the essay
portion.
