NCSMA, THE NEWS & OBSERVER TO HOST

CENTRAL CAROLINA HIGH SCHOOL JOURNALISM DAY

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The North Carolina Scholastic Media Association

and The News & Observer will co-host the 13th annual Central Carolina High

School Journalism Day at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Thursday, Oct. 21.

The event will take place from 8:15 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. in Carroll Hall on

the University’s north campus. Admission is $10 per guest and includes lunch.

During the workshop, students and teachers will have the opportunity to

attend three sessions with journalism professionals to discuss topics such as

photography, design, writing and editing. Participants will gain valuable, hands-

on experience in the field and learn important news gathering techniques.

The 17 workshop sessions will be taught by UNC-Chapel Hill faculty

members and journalists from The News & Observer. Tentative speakers from

the newspaper include David Menconi, Thomas Goldsmith, Corey Lowenstein,

Tim Stevens, Kevin Keister, Josh Shaffer, Matthew Fortner and Nate Taylor.

“The News & Observer is committed to offering quality workshops and we

are very grateful for the volunteers who are participating in this event,” said

NCSMA Director Monica Hill.

UNC-Chapel Hill Professor Charlie Tuggle will teach a video production

session, encouraging storytelling using a visual format.

“Students will learn how to write stories using video, utilize audio and

understand the issues that accompany video storytelling,” Tuggle said. “I like to

keep the session lively while pointing out examples and engaging students in

hands-on writing exercises and activities.”

Student participants are encouraged to bring copies of their high school

newspapers or yearbooks to display at the registration table.

Registration is limited to the first 350 participants, and forms are due by

Oct. 8. Teachers will receive e-mail confirmation in October with parking passes

and additional information.
