I, Marianne T. Watson, independent genealogist and historian, of Lehi, Utah, MAKE OATH AND SAY
AS FOLLOWS:
1, Taman independent Fundamentalist Mormon and polygamist. Iam a founding Director of
Principle Voices. Principle Voices is a non-profit (pending 501c3 status) education and
advocacy organization, the mission of which is to (1) educate others about polygamous
families and their culture, to (2) encourage empowerment of individuals and families from
the polygamous culture, and to (3) provide ctisis referrals and response to those in the
culture. I am also the co-author of Voices in Harmony: Contemporary Women Celebrate
Plural Marriage.
2. Iwas bom in Murray, Salt Lake County, Utah, and grew up in Salt Lake and Utah Counties
in Utah.
3. Tam currently 52 years of age.4. graduated from Lehi High School in 1975; I graduated with a 1-year certificate in
Secretarial Studies from LDS Business College in Salt Lake City, Utah, in June 1976. I
‘earned an Associate Degree in General Studies from Salt Lake Community College in
‘May 2001. I graduated May 2003 from the University of Utah with a Bachelor of Arts
degree in History with a double minor in Spanish and Latin American History.
5. Ihave been retained by Amicus Curiae to provide my expert opinion on the practice of
religiously-motivated polygamy and the experiences of practitioners.
6. Attached hereto and marked as Exhibit “A” to this my Affidavit is a true copy of my
paper titled, “Celebrating Plural Marriage in the Twenty-First Century” which I presented
on January 23, 2010, at the first Mormon Studies Conference in Brazil held in Sao Paulo,
Brazil, in which I set out my true opinion on the issues addressed therein, That report
also sets out in more detail my own experience in being raised in polygamy and choosing
polygamy for myself as an adult.
7. Teertify that I:
am aware that in giving my opinion to the Court, I have a duty to assist the Court.
