definition
• T refers to the transport of energy through
space by electromagnetic waves.
• It depends upon the electromagnetic
waves as a means for transfer of energy
from source to receiver.
• Radiant energy is of the same nature as
ordinary visible light.
• It travels in straight lines around it may be
reflected from a surface.
• The electromagnetic waves with wave length
ranging from0.5to 0.05µm are of importance to
radiant heat transfer.
• EXAMPLE
• Transfer of heat from sun to earth.
• Heat loss from un lagged steam pipe.
Absorptivity-Reflectivity-
Transmissivity
• Any subtance receives and give of energy
in the form of elecyromagnetic waves.
• When energy emited by heated body falls
on a second body, it will partly absorbed,
partly reflected and partly transmitted.
• The fraction of incident radiation absorbed
is known as the absorptivity.
• It may be denoted by letter ‘a’.
• The fraction of incident radiation that is
reflected is known as reflectivity and
denoted by letter ‘r’.
• The fraction of incident radiation that is
transmitted through the body is know as
the transmissivity and denoted by letter ‘‘t’’
• The enercy balance about body on which
the total energy falling is unity
• a+r+t =1
• Most of engineering materials are opaque.

• a+r=1. for opaque material.

• t=1,a=r=0 for transparent material.

• If a=1, r=t=0 for black body.
