¶1 John Mason III died about 1842 in Campbell Co VA.
His parents were John Mason Jr

and Elizabeth Gee. He married Nancy Clark on 18 Jan 1791 in Campbell Co. She was born
about 1764 in Louisa Co VA and died after the 1850 Campbell Co census. Her parents
were John Clark (1720-1786) and Ann Paulett (ca 1730-ca 1787).

¶2 Burwell Mason (from ¶1) was born 6 Oct 1791 in Campbell Co VA and died 22 Oct
1859.
According to the Pension and Land Claims in file WC 9063 Burwell Mason fought in the
War of 1812. He was born in Campbell Co VA 6 Oct 1791. He enlisted on 14 Sep 1812 and
served as a private in Captain James Meek's Company of Virginia Militia and was
discharged on 10 Mar 1814. He re-enlisted on 21 Sep 1814 in Richmond VA and served as a
private in Captain Barksdale's Company of Virginia Militia and was discharged on 14 Dec
1814. At time of his re-enlistment he was 5 feet 10 inches tall, with sandy hair and blue
eyes. On 31 Oct 1850 as a resident of Campbell County, age 59 he applied for bounty land
which was due him under the Act of Sep 1850 on account of his part in the War of 1812. (6)
He was granted bounty land for 160 acres by warrant number 15765. His bounty land
claim was dated 31 Oct 1850. He was listed as a private with Captain James Meeks in the
5th Regiment of Virginia Militia, commanded by Col Frances Preston. He volunteered at
James Hurt's muster ground, in 14 Sep 1814 for a term of six months. Bounty Land claim:
Dated 21 Mar 1851. Burrell Mason appeared before a Justice of Peace and declared that he
was a private with Captain Barksdale's Virginia Regiment, commanded by Col William
Morton and that he was a substitute at Richmond for J. Mason. Sep 1814 for the term of
three months. He was discharged at Elliot's Mill on 14 Dec 1814. From papers found with
Bounty Land Claim papers: Burrell Mason served with Captain Cook's Co of Virginia
Militia from 30 Aug to 19 Sep 1814. Actual service was 21 days. (This information was

Burwell Mason married Lucinda Wray on 4 Jan 1838 at Pigeon Run, Campbell Co VA.
She was born about 1817.

¶14 John Granville Mason (from ¶13) was born 12 Apr 1911 in Lynchburg VA and died 17
Nov 1998 in Charlotte NC. He was buried at Fort Hill Memorial Park, Lynchburg. He was
a photoengraver.
John was a member of the Appalachian Trail Club, the Virginia National Guard and the
Hidden Valley Country Club of Roanoke. According to his obituary, he was survived by
five grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and his wife. He married Beulah Gottshall.

Greenville SC. She was buried in Woodlawn Memorial Park. Her obituary said that she
was survived by 15 grand children and 22 great grand children. She married Alfred Harris
Wills Sr, who was also buried at Woodlawn Memorial Park.

Mason married Nancy Bailey on 8 Feb 1820 in Campbell Co VA. She was born about 1802
in Campbell Co VA and died there on 9 Sep 1854. She was buried in the cemetery where
Yancy and Mary Bailey are buried. Her parents were Thomas Bailey (d ca 1823) and his
wife Temperance (d ca 1846)
On 16 May 1866 John Thomas Mason received a deed of gift land from John W. Mason
(Deed Book 34 page 373). It included 100 acres on Little Falling River, the river forming
the North and West boundary. On 11 Jul 1868 John Thomas Mason bought 244 acres for
$550.00 from John W. Mason (Deed Book 34 page 632). This land is in Campbell Co near
or part of Hat Creek Country Golf Club, joining land of E.G. Clark and Edward Gilliam.
In 1876 John Thomas Mason and John W. Mason apparently lost 330 acres of land which
is the golf course and where Leslie Daniel now lives. Charles Radford Berkley bought this
farm 22 Nov 1876 for $6.20 an acre at a sale in which he was highest bidder.

¶56 Mary Jane Mason (from ¶27) was born in 1835 in Campbell Co VA and died between
1900 and 1910. She was buried in the Clark family cemetery near Turnip Creek. She was
Presbyterian. On 21 Dec 1859 in Campbell Co she married (as his 2nd wife) William
Publius Clark, born about 1810 in Charlotte Co VA, died in 1891, and was buried in the
Clark family cemetery. His parents were William Micajah "Cajah" Clark (1778-1854) and
Elizabeth "Betsy" Jones (1784-)
William H. "Billy" Clark and Elijah W. Clark were sons of William Publius Clark and his
first wife Dosha Clark. Both sons died in the Civil War. Both were in 56th VA Infantry.
William died in Richmond VA from typhoid before he drew his first pay. Elijah was ill
with dysentery in Chimborazo Hospital and on 20 Oct 1864 he was furloughed home where
he died on 22 Oct 1864. Dosha is buried beside the sons. William Publius is buried at their
feet, perhaps by second wife Mary Jane Mason, but no there is no marker, just a sunken
area. Mary Jane was living in 1900 census. William Publius was Elder in Hat Creek
Presbyterian Church from 1855 until his death in 1891. To get to this cemetery take State
Road 618 Robin Road from Sugar Hill Road, go about 2 miles to Owl Road, take left about
1/4 mile then right on farm road. There are about 20 unmarked graves in this cemetery.

George Clark was born on the Clark farm which is near the Ward farm and is now owned
by James Poindexter. George Clark was last Clark to live on that farm and his children

Baxter Mason (1811-1883) and Betherland Jane Holt. Ann Liza Mason was living in the
home of her son Alex in the 1910 census, listed as 65 years old. Alex's wife Bell was perhaps
deceased at this time since Bell not listed in the 1910 census.

army. Friends encouraged him to get a discharge as he might otherwise lose his leg. No

Warren. Anna eloped to Washington DC to marry Edwin Warren the day before she was
expected to marry a man she did not love. She made her sister Alice Thompson promise not
to tell until she was sure she and Edward were on the train. The house was already
decorated with flowers, the rings were tied with ribbons and hanging from the ceiling, but
Anna was long gone from a wedding she wanted no part of. They lived in the country near
Richmond after this wedding. This information was from Anna's granddaughter Jane
Marshall who now lives in Raleigh NC.

There is a story to the effect that Ossian did not believe in banks and so buried all his
money. When the banks began failing during the depression, he saw a sign on the Phenix
Bank saying it was closed. He found the banker and asked how much money was needed to
keep the bank open. The banker told him the amount, and he dug up the money and used it
to keep the bank open.

was a farmer. He served in the 56th VA Infantry during the Civil War. His parents were
Garland Anderson Berkley (1800-1885) and Catherine Frances Clark (1812-1897).
Woodson Berkley received a $15 Civil War pension for stomach cramps and dizziness. He
was a POW at Amelia Court House VA on 5 Apr 1865 and was released from Point
Lookout on 23 Jun 1865. After Samatha's death, Woodson married a second time to Emma
Jackson on 6 Dec 1899. One daughter from this second marriage was Mary E. Berkley,
who was born 23 Oct 1900, died 22 May 1988 and is buried in Mt Herman Baptist Church
cemetery, Chesterfield VA. She married Julian Stratton and they owned a farm near
Richmond VA. Mary left a three million dollar estate to Ferrum College. The President's
home at Ferrum College is the Stratton house.
Woodson Berkley was Cecil Marvin Berkley's great uncle.

hundred years old when she died. She was a teacher. On 16 Sep 1909 in Campbell Co VA
she married Hugh Nelson Elliotte, born 16 Feb 1846 in Campbell Co, died 1 Jan 1916 in
Richmond VA and was buried in the Hat Creek Presbyterian Church cemetery. His
parents were John C. Elliotte (1812-) and Anne Margaret Payne.
Hugh enlisted in the Confederate army during the Civil War at Frederickhall, Lousia
County VA in Feb 1864. He served with "Morgan's Raiders." He was never wounded but
he was captured at the Battle of Spottsylvania Court House VA on 12 May 1864. He was in
prison at Fort Delaware for thirteen months, became disabled with consumption of the
lungs, and was discharged on 7 Jun 1865. Hugh and Josie lived at Hat Creek VA. Hugh
gave land for Beulah Baptist Church, but he was a member of Hat Creek Presbyterian.
They attended Beulah Baptist and Hat Creek Presbyterian on alternate Sundays.
