Let it be known that the Allied Veterans Council of Milwaukee County voted unanimously to
endorse and support the efforts of the Dryhootch, a veteran nonprofit, to lease space on the
grounds of the Zablocki VA Center in Milwaukee. The mission of Dryhootch is to provide a safe
place, consisting of a coffee house and meetings rooms for veterans to reconnect with their
brothers and sisters. The meeting rooms will be used to provide space for veteran
organizations, as well as AA meetings, PTSD peer to peer groups, or governmental
organizations to host informational meetings and services for veterans.
Since the Civil War, the VA Grounds in Milwaukee were specifically designed to serve and
provide refuge for fragile veterans, including those who are disabled, homeless or at-risk, and
economically oppressed. The original name of this site was the National Home for the Disabled
Volunteer Soldiers. We believe the Dryhootch embodies the spirit of this hallowed history in
providing a safe place for veterans who are at-risk, disabled, or seeking to reconnect with their
brothers and sisters to maintain the camaraderie of service.
We ask the Veterans Administration to approve the lease of space in the Historic District. We
also call upon the citizens and businesses in Wisconsin to support the Dryhootch, both spiritual
and financially, for the creation of this necessary endeavor.
Sincerely,
Allied Veterans Council of Milwaukee County
