Setting Up K-PACS with Conquest DICOM

(18-Feb-2008 / gsm)

1. Introduction
This note describes how to setup the K-PACS/Conquest DICOM PACS system used at Sylvania Veteri-
nary Hospital. The requirements for SVH are:

(a) At this time the only source of DICOM images at SVH is a Philips HDI 3500 ultrasound system.
It is located at the network address of 192.168.1.100, and is set to use an AET of HDI3000, on
the default port of 104.

(b) The ultrasound system will talk to the Conquest DICOM server, which is to be setup on the
workstation CONSULT3 at address 192.168.1.15. The Conquest DICOM server will use an AET
of CONQUEST and operate on the default port of 5678. All images from the ultrasound will
be stored on CONSULT3 by Conquest, which will act as the PACS server for the rest of the
workstations.

(c) The K-PACS viewer will be used on each of the client workstations to access images stored
in the PACS. The K-PACS DICOM server in each workstation will be setup with an AET like
KPACS-F1, KPACS-C3 etc. and all client workstations will use port 5679.

2. Downloads
The following software must be downloaded from the internet to setup this system:

(a) The Conquest DICOM software can be dowloaded from:

http://www.xs4all.nl/∼ingenium/dicom.html

At the time of writing, the current version of Conquest is 1.4.13, and the following files should
be downloaded:
dicomserver1413.zip (5685 KB)
bdeinstall5.zip (4022 KB)

(b) The K-PACS software can be downloaded from:

http://www.k-pacs.net

Click on DOWNLOADS, and select the K-PACS All-in-one Installer. The current version is
V1.5.0, and is 6.2MB in size.

3. Setup Ultrasound
Setting up the ultrasound equipment has been covered in an earlier document,1 and the ultrasound
should be setup identically here.

4. Setup Conquest DICOM

Setting up Conquest DICOM has also been covered in an earlier document,1 and the same setup should
be used here except for the following modifications to dicom.ini:
1
See Sylvania Veterinary Hospital: DICOM Image Archive for Ultrasound (2007)

MyACRNema = CONQUEST
FileNameSyntax = 8
The first change simply sets the AET fro the Conquest DICOM server, and the second forces the PACS
hierarchy to be organised as:
ID[32]\Studyuid\Seriesuid\Imageuid.dcm

5. Setup K-PACS
The following procedure should be followed on all the workstations that are to have access to the PACS
system:

(a) Run the K-PACS Installer, and let it install into the default location of C:\KPacs, with images
saved in C:\KPacs\Imagebox.

(b) The AET should be set in accordance with the following table, and the port should be set to 5679
on all workstations.

Workstation AET
Frontdesk1 KPACS-F1
Frontdesk2 KPACS-F2
Consult1 KPACS-C1
Consult2 KPACS-C2
Consult3 KPACS-C3
Pathology KPACS-PA
Preproom1 KPACS-P1
Preproom2 KPACS-P2
Kennelroom KPACS-K
Office KPACS-O

(c) Once the K-PACS installation has completed, start K-PACS and click on the Dicom Configuration
button. Edit the Conquest(Expamle) found there to have the following parameters:
Logical Name: Conquest
DICOM AE Title: CONQUEST
IP Address: 192.168.1.15
Port number: 5678

(d) Click on the Save button to save these changes, and then click on the Local settings button to
open up that dialog.

(e) Make sure the following parameters are set:

Installation directory: C:\KPacs\
K-PACS Server Application Entity Title:
KPACS-F1
Path of local imagebox: C:\KPacs\Imagebox\
Server port: 5679

(f) Click the Server Admin Tool button. When the dialog opens up, you can modify any incorrect
parameters from the previous window. As well, set Overflow management to based on date of
registration, and set max days on local to 30.

(g) Click the stop K-Pacs Server button, and then the start K-Pacs Server button. This will ensure

the server is running with any changed parameters. Close the dialog, and click Save settings to
close the Local settings dialog.

(h) K-PACS should now be fully configured, ready to use.

To test that K-PACS is working properly, start the Conquest server, and start the K-PACS client. In
K-PACS, click on the Network tab in the Query section, and select Conquest. This enables K-PACS to
retrieve images from Conquest.
Now, with nothing entered in the Search filter section, click Search. After a warning message, a com-
plete list of the patients found in the Conquest PACS should appear. Select a study for one of these
patients, and click Viever. If all is well, the DICOM images for this study will be displayed.
