TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION FOR AAAC (AL-59) EQUIVALENT TO ACSR

DOG CONDUCTOR
1.0 Scope:
This specification provides for the manufacturing, testing before dispatch supply and
delivery of all aluminium alloy stranded conductors for use on 33/11 KV and L.T.
overhead lines in Electricity Distribution System as per details given below:
2.0 Conductor Size:
7/4.26 mm (100 mm2 nominal Aluminium area)=Equivalent to ACSR Dog.
3.0 Standards:
The conductor shall conform to the following Indian Standard Specifications which shall
mean latest revisions with amendments/charges adopted and published unless specifically
stated otherwise in the specification.
1. IS: 398(Part-IV) 1994 Specification for aluminium conductors
2. IS: 1778-1980 Specification for Reels and Drums for
bare conductors.
4.0 Material and Workmanship:
4.1 Material used in manufacture of the conductor shall be of the highest quality of its kind
obtainable and except where modified by the specification, shall comply in all respect
with the standards laid down by Indian Standard Institution.
4.2 The conductor shall be manufactured at hot treated aluminium-magnesium-silicon alloy
wires containing approximately 0.5% magnesium and approximately 0.5% silicon and
having electrical and mechanical properties as contained thereof in IS: 398(Part-IV)
1994.
4.3 All the wires (strands) shall be reasonably smooth, uniform and shall be free from all
defects such as die-marks, scratches, abrasions and kinks etc. after drawing and also after
stranding.
4.4 The wires shall be smooth and free from all imperfections such as spills, splits, etc. The
finished conductor shall have a smooth surface without any surface dent, abrasions,
scuffs marks and shall be free from dirt, grit etc. Also the finished conductors shall be
free from loose strands. The ends of the conductor shall be properly sealed to avoid
unwinding of the strands.
4.5 Particular care has to be taken by the supplier/manufacturer during the manufacture,
handling, packing and transportation of the conductor to see that the surface is not dented,
cut or damaged in anyway.
5.0 Properties of Conductor :
The properties of stranded aluminium alloy conductors shall be as in table-I below :-

6.0 Properties of wires :
The properties of aluminium alloy wire to be used in the manufacture of the stranded
conductor shall be as in table-II below :-

7.0 Modulus Of Elasticity And Coefficient Of Linear Expansion:


The Modulus of elasticity shall as per IS: 398 (Part-IV) 1994 and amendments thereof.
The values of the coefficient of linear expansion for AAAC shall be 23.0x10-6.
8.0 JOINTS:
8.1 Conductor Containing Seven Wires:
8.1.1 There shall be no joints of any kind in any wire of a stranded conductor containing 7
wires, except those made in base rod or wire before final drawing.
8.1.2 A certificate shall be recorded by the supplier on each and every invoice/bill and challan
as follows:
"Certified that there is no joints of any kind in any wire of the conductor."
9.0 Stranding:
The wires used in manufacture of stranded conductor before stranding shall conform to
all the relevant requirements of IS: 398 (Part-IV) 1994. The wires shall be evenly and
closely stranded.
10.0 Lay Ration Of Conductor:
The lay ratio (ratio of the axial length of a complete turn of the helix formed by an
individual wire in a stranded conductor to the external diameter of the helix) shall be
within the limits given below:-

11.0 Guaranteed Technical Particulars:
The guaranteed technical particulars of the conductor shall be as per details annexed
herewith.

12.0 Tests:
The wires used for alloy conductor shall comply with the following tests as per IS: 398
(Part-IV)1994 and /or as specified by the purchaser.
Samples for the tests specified herein under shall be taken by the manufacturer before
stranding, from not less than 10% of the individual lengths of aluminium alloy wire
included in any one final heat-treatment batch which will be included in any one
consignment of stranded conductors.
All the tests given below shall also be carried out by the representative of the purchaser
and samples by cutting 1-2 meters from the outer end of the finished conductor from not
less than 10% of the finished reels or drums (except of Test no. 6)
12.1 Check for diameter of individual Aluminium Strands.
12.2 Check for lay ratio of various layers of Aluminium Alloy wires.
12.3 Breaking load tests on individual Aluminium Strands.
12.4 Elongation tests.
12.5 Electrical resistance test on each strand.
12.6 Checking of conductor surface, declared length and its weight.
12.7 Visual examination test on conductor drums as per IS: 1778/1980.
12.8 The rejection & retest procedure shall be followed as stipulated in IS: 398 (Part-IV) 1994
13.0 Test And Test Certificate:
The conductor shall be subjected to all tests laid down in the relevant ISS at contractor's
works or at approved test laboratory at contractor's cost. Certified copies of test certificate
in respect of tensile test of Aluminium and electrolytic quality of Aluminium and all
other tests as prescribed in the relevant ISS shall be furnished by contractor in duplicate,
one copy to respective consignee officer, second copy to Superintending Engineer(MM),
KESCo, Kanpur.
The contractor shall intimate the quantity of material to be offered for inspection at least
4 weeks in advance to Kanpur, KESCo, Kanpur.
As per clause 14 of General Conditions of Contract Form 'B', the contractor shall give 15
days advance notice to the Kanpur/Chief Engineer (Equator), KESCo, Kanpur of every
lot of material being ready duly packed for dispatch alongwith routine test result of the
material offered, and details of dispatches made against last authorization for dispatch in

addition to the test specified in the technical specification. Chief Engineer KESCo,
Kanpur shall there upon arrange inspection and testing of material. However dispatch
instructions shall be issued by CE, KESCo, Kanpur
The contractor shall also render necessary assistance to the inspecting officer(s) in
making random sampling. Wherever considered necessary, the material shall be marked,
embossed or sealed by the inspection officer after inspection has been carried out and the
material approved for dispatch.
The purchaser shall reserve the right to draw required number of samples of other major
items of raw materials. These samples shall, however be drawn and sealed in the presence
of contractor or his authorized representative. The purchaser further reserves the right to
get these samples tested form any government recognized test house/laboratory or
Government test house/laboratory.
The contractor shall record either of the following certificates on the invoice/packing list
(challan) as the case may be.
"Certified that the consignment (lot) of material supplied through this invoice/packing list
(challan) has been inspected and tested by representative(s) of Chief Engineer KESCo,
Kanpur and has been approved for dispatch.
OR
"Certified that the inspection and testing of consignment (lot) of material supplied
through this invoice/packing list (challan) has been waived off by the purchaser vide his
letter no. _______ dated ___________ . It is further certified that materials have been
tested and results have been found to be within the values specified in the relevant
ISS/contract as per copies of test certificate enclosed."
Not with-standing the inspection carried out by the officers of DISCOMS, in case of any
short/defective supply of material detected by the consignee, the contractor shall be liable
to make good such shortages/rectify the defects. The consignment also be subjected to
joint inspection by representative of the contractor and the purchaser in the stores of
KESCo in case of any dispute regarding quality and/or quantity of the material supplied.
In case the material offered for inspection in not found ready when the inspecting party
reaches the works of contactor, the cost incurred by the KESCo on this account will
become payable by the contractor on demand by Kanpur, KESCo, Kanpur within 30
days.
14.0 Calibration Of Testing Equipments:

The tensile testing machine and Kelvin's Bridge machine etc. shall be got checked from
the competent authority for calibration once in a year. Calibration certificates, when
demanded by the inspecting officer, shall be produced for verification purposes. In case
of dispute regarding calibration the instruments shall be jointly sealed and sent to
institution/lab of repute for calibration at the cost of supplier. The result of such checking
shall be binding on the supplier.
15.0 Packing & Marking:
15.1 The conductors shall be supplied on strong non-returnable wooden drums so that it is not
damaged during transit and can withstand all the transit and weather hazards. The
supplier/manufacturer shall be responsible for any damage to the material during transit
due to improper/inadequate packing. The drum shall be painted on the inside and outside
with Aluminium paints and fitted with under the lagging. The conductor drums shall
conform to IS: 1778/1980. The drums shall be strapped with steel wire. Each drum shall
have the following information marked on it with indelible ink along with other essential
data.
1. KESCo Kanpur
2. Designation of Consignee.
3. Drum no. of the conductor
4. Contract/Specification number.
5. Size and type of conductor
6. Number and length of each conductor in the drum.
7. Gross weight of the drum
8. Weight of the empty drum.
9. Net weight of conductor
10. Position of conductor end.
11. ISI mark.
The reels shall be of such construction as to ensure delivery of conductor in the field free
from displacement and damage and should be able to withstand all stresses due to holding
and the stringing operation so that conductor surface is not dented, scratched or damaged
in any way during manufacture, transport and erection
15.2 All wooden components shall be manufactured out of seasoned wood preferably soft
wood free from defects that may materially weaken the component parts of the drum
wood. Preservative treatment shall be applied to the entire drum with preservative of such
quality, which is not harmful to the conductor.

15.3 The gross weight of each packing in case of AAAC conductor shall not exceed by more
than 10% of the values given in the following table:-

16.0 Length And Varations In Lengths:
The standard length for all AAAC conductor shall be as given below. However, longer
lengths shall be acceptable. Non standard length not less than as mentioned below against
each shall be acceptable subject to the condition that non standard lengths shall not
exceed 10% of the ordered quantity.

ACSR Dog
17.0 Tolerance Of Quantities:
The total permissible variation for the entire quantity ordered shall be subjected to limit
of ±1% (one percent) for orders upto 500 Kms. and ± ½% (half percent) for orders above
500 Kms. However, the permissible variation in case of individual consignee may be
±5%.
18.0 Checking Of Conductor Length:
Sufficient facilities should exist at contractor's premises to measure the conductor length
by the inspecting officers. For this purpose motorized system to facilitate quick
measurement should be available at the works.
19.0 Checking Of Conductor Surface/Declared Length And Weight:
The supplier/manufacturer shall arrange for the inspection of conductors by the
representative of the purchaser specially authorized for this purpose. At least 5% of the
total number of drums of conductors taken at random shall be checked to as certain the
surface declared length and weight of conductor.
