The Physics Assignment 5

Subject: IMPULSE AND MOMENTUM

Class : XI – Science Class

Do the exercises below

1. An 8 g bullet is fired horizontally into a 9 kg block of wood which is free to

move. The velocity of the block and bullet after impact is 40 cm/sec. Calculate
the initial velocity of the bullet.

2. Two Inealastic masses of 16 and 4 grams move in opposite directions toward

each other with velocities of 30 and 50 cm/sec. respectively. Find the resultant
velocity v in collision if they are stuck together.

3. A 15 g bullet is fired horizontally into a 3

kg block of wood suspended by a long cord,
and the bullet remains embedded in the wood.
Compute the velocity of the bullet if the
impact causes the block to swing 10 cm above
its initial level.
Solution :
The velocity V of (block + bullet)just
after impact is equal to the velocity which
(block + bullet) would acquire in falling
freely through a vertical distance of 10 cm.
V = 2 gh = 2 (9.8 m / sec 2
) (0.10 m) =1.4 m / sec

4. A 0.5 kg ball moving with the velocity 4 m/s by a bat which causes it to move
in a reserved direction with velocity 12 m/s. The force of the blow acts on the
ball for 0.01 sec. Find the average force F exerted on the ball by the better.

5. A 500 gram gun fires a 20 gram projectile with a muzzle with velocity of 300
ft/sec. Determine the initial recoil velocity v of the gun. If the recoil is againts
a constant resisting force 150 N.

6. An 80 g bullet is fired horizontally into a 9 kg block of wood which is free to

move. The velocity of the block and bullet after impact is 40 cm/sec. Calculate
the initial velocity of the bullet.

7. Two Inealastic masses of 16 and 4 grams move in opposite directions toward

each other with velocities of 30 and 50 cm/sec. respectively. Find the resultant
velocity v in collision if they are stuck together.
8. A 0.5 kg ball moving with velocity 5 m/s is hit by a bat which causes it to
move in a reserved direction with velocity 20 m/s. the force of the blow acts
on the ball for 0.01 sec. Find the average force F exerted on the ball by the
better.

10. A 20-ton locomotive moving at 20 m/s collides with and coupled to a 15 ton
car at rest on the same straight track. Find their common velocity after impact.

11. An empty coal car weighing 15 tons is coasting on a level track at a constant
speed 10 m/sec. A load of 5 tons of coal is suddenly dumped (at zero
horizontal velocity) into the car from above. What is the new speed of the car
and contest?

12. Sands drops at the rate of 2000kg/min from the bottom of a hopper onto a belt
conveyor moving horizontally at 250m/min.Determine the force required to
drive the conveyor, neglecting friction. Ans 139 N

13, Two inelastic bodies of mass 8 and 4 kg move in opposite directions with
velocities 11 and 7 m/sec respectively. Compute the resultant velocity on
collision if they are stuck together.

14. A 1200lb gun mounted on wheels shoots and 8lb projectile with a muzzle
velocity of 1800ft/sec at an angle of 30o with the horizontal. Find the
horizontal recoil velocity of the gun. Ans 10.4 ft/sec

15. A 400 gram bullet is fired into a 10 kg block of soft wood suspended by a long
rope, and the bullet remains embedded in the block. The impact causes the
center of gravity of the block to rise 3 m. Find the initial velocity of the bullet.

16. A 6 ton truck traveling north at 18 km/jam collides with a 4 ton truck traveling
west at 36 mi/hr. if the two trucks remains locked together. With what speed
and in what direction do they move immediately after the collision?

17. What average resisting force must act on 3 kg mass to reduce its speed from
65 to 15 m/sec in 0.2 sec?

18. A jet of water from a nozzle 1 cm in diameter has a velocity of 40 m/sec and
strikes a flat plate held normal to the jet and moving away from the jet at 20
m/sec. (a) Compute the force exerted by the jet on the moving plate. (b) What
