1. If a = cos r î + sin r ĵ , find ∇ a .

2. If r = r , where r = x î + y ĵ + z k̂ , find:
(a) ∇Φ , where Φ = sin r
(b) ∇ • e r r
(c) ∇ × r r

3. If a and b are constant vectors, and r = x î + y ĵ + z k̂ , show that,

(a) ∇(a • r ) = a

(b) Without considering the components of the respective vectors, show further that,

∇{(a • r )(b • r )} = (a • r ) b + (b • r ) a

4. ( )
Show that ∇ • r n r = (n + 3) r n , where r 2 = x 2 + y 2 + z 2 and n is a constant.

5. If C1 , C 2 and λ are constant scalars, show that, H = e -λx (C1sin λy + C 2 cos λy )

satisfies Laplace’s equation, ∇ 2 H = 0 .
