INTERVIEW -
Captain C. P. Krishnan Nair
New York is a city that Captain C P Krishnan Nair loves. "I have
walked the length and breadth of it. There is no better way to
Even after being away from Kerala for an incredibly long period
of time, a visit back home is eventful. "We have a group of
friends and we make it a point to watch the late night show at
one of the theatres," he says. Films are something that the man
enjoys and he speaks of the recent multi-starrer Twenty:20, as
something that was very well made. "Even in, Mumbai, I watch
films at the multiplex. I quite liked Chak De," he exclaims.
Nair's interest in films has also brought him into close proximity
with actors from the Malayalam film industry. Among them are
Mammootty, Mohanlal and Suresh Gopi. "Mammootty stayed in
this hotel for almost two years while he was shooting for
Ambedkar," says Nair. Well known singer Yesudas is another
good friend.
Nair is a multi-faceted man and has a razor-sharp memory. "I
love gardening and some of the flowers here are from the
Thailand and Argentina," he says as he shows us around the
garden. A believer of Buddha's teachings and the five principles
of Panchsheel, the man is supremely confident about what
India can achieve. "We will be a completely literate nation in a
decade and will be the knowledge centre of the world," says
Nair in a manner that can at best be described as understated.
To him, India and its youth are the beacons for a bright
tomorrow.
There is an interesting anecdote he shares. A few years ago, his
granddaughter was applying to the Culinary Institute of
America. She was told all new admissions were full for the next
two years. "She was quite determined and wrote back to them
saying her grandmother owned four hotels in India," recollects
Nair. Suitably impressed with the credentials and having taken
a good, close look at the lineage, she was admitted.
"I got into the hotel business when I was 64. To me, my wife,
Leela has been the spirit behind the hotel and that has been
the most important thing," he says very candidly. Looking at
how large the business today is, it will be hard to disagree with
that statement.
Krishnan Nair: When I was nine, maybe ten, I was the rebel
in the class. My teacher in the class was a socialist leader. He
gave me study classes. He organized a group of students to
come together for a study class. The slogan he gave us Nothing
to lose, you have the whole world to win. That means you may
be a pauper but you have nothing to lose. And you can win the
whole world. That is a very great thought. I don't think it'll be in
any textbooks. That spirit, that idea, still dominates me. Some
people may think there is no meaning in it. There's a world of
meaning in it.
a great one but you still have to pay compensation. And I said,
Okay, I am prepared to pay compensation. Now listen to what
happens next. 17 Magazine contacts me and says, they want to
do a story about the fabric. America had not seen fabric like
that before. It was something nice, something new, something
different, something to talk about. So I said, Okay, I'll be glad to
talk to the magazine. And a 19 year old woman came to
interview me at the hotel. I had many photographs, the people
in the pit doing the weaving, the washing the cloth on the
riverside. Everything. The interviewer said, Can I have these
pictures? I said, Of course, you can have all of them. Now what
did she do? She wrote a ten-page article called: Bleeding
Madras, miracle fabric from India. Available in America only at
Brooks Brothers. It hit the news-stands and people said, My
God, what a wonderful fabric from India. And you know what?
10,000 inquiries came to Brooks Brothers. People wanted to
buy it but then, well, they had to say that the fabric had been
all returned!
So the American trader called me. He said, we want to take the
fabric back and I said, No return. Now you must pay the price.
25 dollars for the fabric. Remember it had been two dollars
before. Yes, he said, 25 dollars. We'll take it. And not only did
they take back all that we had sold them before, we took an
order for 100,000 more pieces. And the orders kept coming in.
That's how I started my career in America. And there was no
looking back.
Now about the hotel, back in the 1980s the airport was coming
here [Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, in Mumbai]. You
can see the airport from my lobby. At the time the textile
factory was here. So I said, the airport is coming, there must be
an airport here. Why not take the location advantage and start
a hotel here? But I hardly had any capital. Not even five
thousand dollars. But I had the will, the will to start a hotel. So I
went to the bank and said I want to put up a hotel and they
said, How much money do you have? I said, Five thousand
dollars. And they said, How can you put up a hotel? I said, We'll
make money. And can you believe it, I went to America, I
contacted about 200 people, people I had met during the
handloom and fabric days, you see. And everyone said we are
interested in your hotel. How much of a share can you give?
And it was like that that we got a million dollars collected that
became the seed capital. I remember speaking to someone in
LA who said, Why are you hawking around to the people? I'll
give you a million, I'll give you five million dollars! But I said,
No, I only want five thousand dollars from you. I wanted a
broad base. And from that start the hotel was made.
As for the Indian work force, there are so many colleges rising
up everywhere for hotel management courses. A billion people,
youngsters studying in the colleges to join the industry. It's not
a big problem. We won't find any difficulty in getting people.
• And attrition?
the land mass, in lakes, in ponds, with the help of these water
bodies you could cultivate much more, you could grow more
food everywhere. So much of India is still not cultivated or
under-cultivated. If the rivers were linked, there could be one
crop, two crops, three crops in a year. You could not only
supply India, but you could supply the whole world. India should
be doing that. That is the biggest task for India.
Now how did I become an environmentalist? I would say, My
childhood friends were trees. I was living with coconut, mango,
jackfruit, tamarind. Our life is mingled with the trees. In those
days I never thought of anything else. My wife brought in 5000
coconuts to plant on the roadside here near the airport. Now
the whole area around the airport has been landscaped by us.
My new hotels all use water harvesting. And the water for the
gardens here [in Mumbai] we collect here. We also use solar
and windmill technologies. In Madras we bought ten acres of
land for solar power and are linking that power to the grid. All
the lighting in the hotel there is done by solar power.
Chairman's Message
We love people. It is this that has made The Leela what we are
today and must inspire us in the years to come.
“GROUP DHARMAS”
The Upanishads, or the summation of The Vedas are ancient
Indian scriptures that date back to the 4th century B.C. They
describe various 'Dharmas' which means - something
established or firm that forms the basis for philosophies, beliefs
and practices originating in. Across Leela properties in India, we
practice the eight 'Leela Dharmas'.
A doctrine of duties and simple virtues which are to be followed
by each individual employee. Derived from the deep rooted
Indian tradition of hospitality 'Atithi Devo Bhava' ( Guest is God
as translated from Taittiiya Upanishad), these Dharmas stand
for what the Leela Group firmly believes in. Principles that
orient our key employees and form the foundation of our code
• PRATHAMA DHARMA
As an integral part of the Leela Group, this will be our primary
dharma. No matter what role we perform as team members, we
shall place the guests first and foremost, the organization
second, and the self last, while performing our duties to the
finest standards.
• DVITIYA DHARMA
Everything we do shall be laced with courtesy and
consideration for others and the highest standards - whether
qualitative, ethical, intellectual, social, monetary or moral.
• TRITIYA DHARMA
It shall be our constant endeavour to understand, anticipate
and satisfy the needs of our guests with warmth and attention
to detail; apart from maintaining excellence, aesthetics, style
and the utmost regard for comfort and privacy.
• CHATURTHA DHARMA
Trust and team spirit will be the foundation stones upon which
we raise our company's future and success. The taller we grow,
the deeper we shall attempt to cultivate these virtues.
• PANCHAMI DHARMA
We shall be fearless in performing our duties with conviction
and pride, while seeking constructive feedback and dissent in
order to enhance our standards. We shall adhere to industry
standards of quality and certification and constantly strive to
outperform ourselves.
• SASHTI DHARMA
We respect each other as much as we cherish our guests. We
are not an organization of employees, we see ourselves as a
company of stars. Here, every employee is rewarded on an
individual basis, in terms of stellar achievements as well as
personal growth.
• SAPTAMI DHARMA
Like Mother Nature, we seek to nurture and protect. In all
aspects of business, we shall diligently safeguard the wellbeing,
• ASHTHAMI DHARMA
We believe in the dharma of fairness. While we may encounter
challenges, we shall never forsake the establishment of a
healthy code of conduct or adopt practices influenced by
personal preferences or prejudices.
• Overview :
Founded in 1957 by Capt. C.P. Krishnan Nair, the Rs.450 crore
Leela Group is engaged in the business of ready-made
garments and luxury hotels and resorts.
• Background :
It was in 1957 when Capt. Nair, after completing his stint in the
army, set up a small industrial unit in suburban Mumbai.
Inspired by the handloom weaving industry in Cannanore,
Kerala, this was the Leela Scottish Lace Ltd., India’s first and
only lace manufacturing plant.
With a commitment to excellence and innovation, Leela Lace
Ltd. grew from a small beginning to become the first company
to introduce the “Bleeding Madras” fabric and other handlooms
such as Cheese Cloth and gauze fabric to the fasion capitals of
the west, specifically the USA. Their runaway success was
reflected in the magic words “Guaranteed to bleed”, which
became the key to the popularity of India’s textile export.
In the early 70’s, the company launched its ready-made
garments unit and is today, India’s premier export house. Since
the 80’s, the client list of Leela Lace reads like the veritable
who’s who of the American fashion industry : The Gap, Liz
Claiborne, Polo Jeans, Tommy Hilfiger, JC Penney, Macy’s, Van
Heusen, Walmart…..
Mr. Dinesh Nair, the present Managing Director of Leela Lace
Ltd., took over from his father Capt. C.P. Krishnan Nair, in the
early 80’s. After consolidating the the company’s position, he
shifted his focus to the American woven sportswear market
with a continuous emphasis on fast turnaround and big
volumes. Rapid growth has been the result, and has made
Leela Lace the largest garment exporter from India to the USA.
Today Leela Lace has 20 factories with state of the art
equipment – 10 in Bangalore, 5 in Chennai and 5 in Mumbai,
with an annual turnover of US$ 75 million. It is Leela Lace Ltd.,
the parent company, which is the promoter of Hotel
Leelaventure Ltd.
• Hotel Leela Venture Ltd.
The Leela Kempinski Mumbai and The Leela Kempinski Goa are
two of the best hotels in India, and have also won considerable
international acclaim. For this to have been achieved in 12
short years is nothing short of remarkable.
In fact, The Leela Kempinski Mumbai has received many
rewards for being the best 5 star deluxe hotel in India, and The
Leela Kempinski Goa voted the best luxury beach resort in
India.

Scottish Lace Private Limited. He was also instrumental in

small exporters. He promoted The Leela Kempinski Mumbai in
1986, The Leela Kempinski Goa in 1990 and The Leela Palace
Kempinski Bangalore in 2001.

Rs 10,500 a night for a Beach View Deluxe Room. Includes
buffet breakfast, use of the gym and swimming pool. Valid from
October 16 to 31.
We were staying in the suite (Rs 25,000 per night plus taxes,
double occupancy. Rooms at the Club cost Rs 11,000 per night
plus taxes while rooms at the main hotel start at Rs 5,000). A
living room led into the bedroom and both were fronted by a
balcony with a view to the Arabian Sea. We lived our days to
the original soundtrack of waves crashing, churning and stirring
up a cappuccino of foam all around us. Did I mention the
butler? He's complimentary in both room and suite stays at The
Club. Ours, Mr Pintu, made our stay hassle-free. He held on to
my camera when we were busy going back and forth between
buffet and table, and made reservations at the hotel's
restaurants for various meals. And when the sun came on too
strongly, Mr Pintu fetched our sunnies from our room. He was
also the conduit between the housekeeper and us. So
everytime we moved out, even if it was just for 10 minutes,
we'd come back to find our room touched up. Pillows
straightened out, duvets tucked back in, waterbottles and
chocolate tray replenished.
Club members also have an exclusive gym, cigar lounge and
library. The last has high tea presentations every day with petit
fours and tartlets. And there is the café exclusive to The Club,
open only to residents, around the clock. Whether you're sitting
indoors or out, there's some serious unwinding coming your
way. Outdoor, you sit next to another infinity pool - and this
one is right on the edge of the world. If it trembled, you'd fall
off its lip.
Every morning saw us attack the breakfast buffet at The Club's
café. The fruit - papaya, watermelon, muskmelon - all as sweet
as sin. Stuffed parathas as good as any we'd had. Eggs, south
Indian snacks, pancakes with fruit compote, baked croissants,
Danish tarts, a spread of muesli, yoghurt with fruit, cheese.
every day was a Sunday brunch day.
Though the mains were not always as sophisticated as in most
major cities, they got local and basic international dishes right.
But the crème brulee that we had for one lunch was an
unappetising greyish yellow without the crisp caramel. The
Kerala style prawn curry was sumptuous, and you could taste
the freshness of the ingredients. I can't say we ate till we felt
sick because our food experience was inconsistent. But we
loved the atmosphere - inside the hotel and of the gorgeous
coastline of Kerala that it was imbedded in.

KNOW BANGLORE
Culture
Bangalore’s a refreshing mix of the latest technology and time-
honoured traditions. So there is a lot to experience in Bangalore
that will give you an insight into the city of kings.
Do visit the VidhanaSoudha, a magnificent granite structure
that houses both the Legislative Chambers of the State
Government and is a symbol of Bangalore’s pride. You could
visit the museum, or the Palace of Tipu Sultan, an ornate two
storeyed wooden palace that has been converted into a
museum and living tribute to the glorious reigns of kings like
Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan. And if you want to take back a
memento, there are few places better than Cauvery Handicrafts
Emporium, where you can get exquisite traditional handicraft
items make from rosewood, sandalwood, wood-inlay, lacquer
and bidri.
Please get in touch with us and we’ll gladly arrange a guided
tour for you.
Language
Kannada is the official language of the state. English is spoken
at offices and commercial establishments, while shopkeepers
and street vendors speak Kannada.
Weather
At an average height of 3000 feet above sea level, Bangalore is
blessed with what many citizens of the more tropical parts of
India call “perfect weather”.
Mild summers run from April – June, and while the mild
monsoon is from August – October, evening showers are a
delightful, around-the-year surprise. November – February can
be nippy, but overall, Bangalore is blessed with a pleasant,
equable climate.
Transportation
Bangalore has amongst the most efficient network of private
taxis in India, which are available on call and around-the-clock.
The more adventurous could take a ride in the three-wheeled
autorickshaws.

KNOW KOVALAM
According to a legend, Kerala was raised from the sea by
Parshuram, the famed Hindu warrior priest. Kerala was where
St. Thomas first landed and while it has one of India’s oldest
synagogues, it has a large population of both Syrian Christians
as well Muslims. Add strong matrilineal traditions and India’s
highest literacy rate and you have a state that is a beacon of
harmonious prosperity.
Culture
Wherever you go in Kerala, you will find people aware and
proud of their traditions and culture. From ancient dance forms
like Kathakali to Kalaripayattu, rumoured to the first martial art
in the world to Ayurveda, the time tested path to rejuvenation,
every cultural tradition of Kerala is observed with as much
enthusiasm as it is practiced. So it comes as no surprise that
festivals like the Snake Boat Race in Alappuzha and Elephant
Race at Guruvayoor are still performed like the first one many
generations ago. Do get in touch with us and we’ll be happy to
arrange a guided tour that will let you experience the true
culture of Kerala.
Language
Malayalam is the local language and is widely spoken. And
since Kerala is the most literate state in India, a fair number of
its people are conversant in English.
Weather
Kerala is the most southerly of India’s states. Bound by the
Arabian Sea on one side and the Western Ghat mountain range
on the other, Kerala is one of the wettest places in India. As
much as 5000 mm of rain can fall in some parts, while average
rainfall is around 3000 mm for the 4-5 wet months of the
Southwest Monsoon. As a result of this phenomenon, Kerela is
blessed with the lushest green landscape in India. The summer
months from March to May can get quite hot, while the winter
months of December and January are best for visits.
Transportation
Kerala is fairly easy for tourist travel. Private taxis are both
readily available and easily arranged for. The more
adventurous can try out the local buses.
DELUXE ROOM
Perhaps the premier reason for giving these rooms their well-
deserved name is that they start from a sprawling 52 sq. mts.
At The LeelaKempinski Gurgaon, Delhi (NCR), the Premier

rain shower, a spacious work area with both wired and Wi-Fi
internet access, integrated IP technology and a 40 inch LCD

In what seems like no time at all, Gurgaon has gone from being
a sleepy village on the outskirts of Delhi to becoming perhaps
the most important satellite city in the National Capital Region,
where modern technology perfectly coexists with ancient
folklore.
Culture
Located in the National Capital Region of New Delhi, Gurgaon's
roots are millennia deep. The name Gurgaon is an evolution of
"Guru Gram" or "The Guru's Village"; this is the site of the
village of the great teacher Dronacharya from the great Hindu
epic Mahabharata. In fact, his tank can still be visited on the
western side of the Railway Road. Gurgaon also has the famous
temple of Sheetla Mata, which attracts droves of devotees
every Monday and Tuesday.
It's proximity to New Delhi also ensures that shopping delights
of Delhi like the fabled Meena Bazaar, ChandniChowk, Asia's
largest wholesale market and cultural delights like the Jama
Masjid, the Red Fort and myriad Mughal masterpieces are a
short drive away.
Language
Hindi is the main spoken and written language of the region
while English is spoken at offices and commercial
establishments. Due to New Delhi's Mughal past, Urdu is fairly
common, as is Punjabi.
Weather
The Gurgaon, Delhi NCR region straddles the Gangetic Plain
and sees extremes of heat and cold. The hot summers run from
April to October, when afternoon is best spent indoors. June to
July sees the arrival of the monsoon, which alleviates the heat
to a degree. Cold winds sweeping south from the Himalayas
make for bracing winters where woollens are a must.
Transportation
Gurgaon has an efficient network of private taxis in India, which
are available on call around-the-clock. The more adventurous
could take a ride in the three-wheeled auto rickshaws.
