Attention Western Sydney Visual Arts

Teachers

Teachers’ Meeting
The Arts Shape Paper: Australian Curriculum
National consultation on ACARAs The Arts Shape Paper will take place from 0ctober
8th to December 17th, 2010. The purpose of this Shape Paper is to provide a broad
outline of the proposed Australian Curriculum in the Arts K-12. This includes the
artforms of Visual Arts, Music, Drama, Dance and Media Arts. The Shape Paper is now
available ACARAs website: http://www.acara.edu.au/default.asp.)

At the July VADEA annual conference 120 Visual Arts teachers rejected the structure
and content of the lead up documentation for the Shape Paper. At a recent VADEA
forum in September, 180 Visual Arts teacher also rejected the proposed content.

Find out more about what is proposed at this meeting from speakers from Western
Sydney schools. Download the Shape Paper. Be involved at an individual, school and
professional level; know what is at stake and make your voice heard in this
consultation through public meetings and through surveys on the ACARA and Board
of Studies websites. Our future depends on it! Why would we want to trade away
what is regarded as a world-class syllabus?

• Are you prepared to compromise the practical and conceptual rigour of the programs
you teach and reduce student expectations of learning in the Visual Arts?
• Are you prepared to allow Visual Arts to be integrated with the other Arts at the
expense of your own professional knowledge and the achievement of student outcomes?
• Are you willing to lose our Mandatory Course (100 hours) in Years 7 and 8 Visual Arts?
Would 20 minutes per week or 13 .5 hours per year permit you to achieve what you do
with students now?
• Would you be happy to forgo the achievement of students (e.g. in the HSC and
ARTEXPRESS), through specialist teaching/programs in schools, timetabling, teachers’
jobs, university pathways, and opportunities for students to pursue careers in Visual Arts
& Design?
