Ageing with a Smile Initiative

Vision, Mission and Values


Ageing with a Smile Initiative (ASI) is a new and
innovative drive launched in The Gambia in January 2010 by
Dr Abubacarr Gaye, the Hon. Minister of Health and Social
Welfare. The initiative aims to improve the health and
general welfare of the elderly people in the country.

Vision Statement:

The elderly in The Gambia enjoy good health,


remain productive and are valued and cared for by
society.

Mission Statement:

ASI exists to support the elderly in The Gambia to


lead healthier and dignified lives.

Value Statements:

Members of ASI will execute the mission of the


organisation and will be guided by the following values and
principles:

1. Respect the dignity of the elderly and protect and


promote their fundamental human rights
2. Non-discriminatory to the elderly in the
implementation of our programmes- be it in terms
of gender, religion, ethnicity or other variables.
3. Implement programmes and activities that are
locally relevant, appropriate and responsive to
the needs of the elderly
4. Initiate and support programmes and services that
are effective, evidenced-based and sustainable
5. Provide information to the elderly and the wider
public that is correct and up-to-date
6. Involve the elderly in the design, implementation
and evaluation of our programmes
7. We value the input and participation of community
members and other stakeholders to promote the
welfare of the elderly
8. Our partnership with other organisations will be
based on a shared vision and values.
