    Chapter 1:

    Exposition

    Setting: Devon School

    Time Period: Flash backs to 1940’s (WWII) assoc. w/ fear

    Characters:

     Gene Forrester- Narrator, best friends with Phineas.


     Phineas “Finny” – Roommate w/ Gene, Daredevil- dares others to jump off of a tree into the
    river.
     Finny’s friends- Elwin “Leper” Lepellier, Chet Douglass, and Bobby Zane

    Devon School: Prepares boys for the war.

    Places that are assoc. w/ fear: stairway, tree

    Tone: dreary, sterile, fear

    War is represented by the boys leaping off the tree- adventure and bravery.
