2 2
How many ways can the bunny hop 12 steps?
3 3
How many ways can the bunny hop 15 steps? 4 5
SUPER Challenge: 5 8
Can you make a REASONABLE estimate for the 6 13
number of ways the bunny can hop for 100

Polya stated the following:

I can understand the problem

I can devise a plan
I can carry out the plan
I can look back (reflect)
I can understand the problem
How did I get you to understand the problem?

What is the data?

What is the unknown?

What is the condition?
I can devise a plan
How did I get you to come up with a plan?

You used charts

You used patterns You used cubes and pictures to

to ensure all possible hops model the bunny's hops
I can carry out the plan
Do not write this slide down yet

What happened when we tried to carry out

your plan last week?

The 12 step problem was too complicated!

So what did I have you guys do yesterday?

I can carry out the plan

We made the problem EASIER by changing the

data. Instead of 12 steps, we started with 1. Then what?

Then we kept going from the 1 step

problem up to the 6 step problem, and
discovered a PATTERN! That pattern
helped us find our SOLUTION!!
Hey cool! We did all of
this..except....

I can understand the problem

I can devise a plan
I can carry out the plan
I can look back (reflect)
Your job today:

Come up with a different type of bunny problem by changing the

condition or the data. You will be writing up your problem on
chart paper. Other groups will try to solve your problem! This will
help you reflect on what it means to change and expand on a
problem!

Checklist for Problem Making

does the problem make sense?
