This is but one of Manaus, Brazil's ferry docks, and a picture can't describe the chaos each experiences when entire
families, farm animals, products of all description and other entities are put on board the ferry of choice. The stalls
in the middle of the dock sell food and refreshments, and some rent (and sell) hammocks for overnight journeys
on the river. There is no air conditioning on the ferries, and in this very hot climate I was quick to wonder how

Baltic Sea
The Baltic Sea is positioned
in Northern Europe and
bordered by Sweden (a
part of the Scandinavian
Peninsula), Finland, Russia,
Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania,
Poland, northeastern
Germany, and eastern
Denmark and its numerous
islands.
In the north, above the
Aland Islands, the Baltic
Sea is referred to as the
Gulf of Bothnia. In the
east, the Gulf of Finland
connects the Baltic Sea to
St. Petersburg, Russia. In
the south and southeast it
forms two small gulfs,
including the Gulf of Gdansk and the Gulf of Riga.
The definitive western end of the Baltic Sea is difficult to determine, as well as
indicate on the map, but in general terms its waters flow on through Kattegat Bay
into the Skagerrak Strait, and then merge with the North Sea.
Estimating the size of the Baltic Sea is based on where the sea actually ends, so
all known measurements are estimates, at best. Wikipedia references a surface area
of 377,000 sq km, while Baltic Resources uses 375,600 sq km. Average depth runs
near 55 meters (180 ft), while the maximum depth is measured at 459 meters
(1,506 ft).
The Kiel Canal in northern Germany, is one of the world's busiest artificial
waterways. International sea traffic uses it to connect between the North Sea and the
Baltic Sea, thus saving hundreds of miles of additional travel time around Denmark,

The Devil's Islands archipelago consists of three small

islands, located just a few miles off the coast of French
Guiana. The group includes Ile du Diable (Devil's Island),
Ile Ste-Joseph and Ile Royale.
Their original name was the Triangle Islands, but after

decades of proving hazardous to shipping, their name
was appropriately changed to the Devil's Islands, and
how prophetic that name would later become.
Known throughout the modern world by the brutal history

of the 19th century French penal settlement that was
located here, it was Ile du Diable (or Devil's Island itself)
that perpetuated that story across the planet, especially
with the release of a novel and movie called Papillon.
Although a fictional tale, it contained accounts of the
difficult daily life gathered from actual surviving prisoners.
This is a look at the infamous Devil's Island from high atop Ile Royale.
The island's most famous prisoner, Captain Dreyfuss, a Access to the island is not granted to tourists, and trying to get there is

This is one of the haunting cell windows in the prison complex, behind which
conditions were reportedly deplorable. Solitary confinement was often used,
and men would spend 6 months to 5 years in a dark, closet size cell.
We walked around the entire shoreline of Ile Royale, and its beach areas
were literally covered by thousands and thousands of coconuts.
Most prisoners, and many of the prison guards, contracted Malaria and other
aliments. This is all that remains of the large prison hospital.

Colorful flowers provided the few-and-far-between bright spots on Ile Royale.
Death was an everyday occurrence within the prison and this ugly (rather
scary) building was used as the island mortuary.

Another bright spot in this rather dreary place were the colorful, independent
roosters that roamed the island at will, just like in Key West, Florida.

In the local gift shop, postcards were popular purchases for ship passengers.
This one illustrated the unfortunate souls that were imprisoned here.
This cemetery on Ile Royale contained graves of non-prisoners, mostly

children and those of early settlers. Prisoners that died were often
(unceremoniously) throw into the sea.

Finally, after all of the doom and gloom, a cute and happy prisoner. She
willingly broke out of jail and joined me on the ship.

The Arctic
This region of the planet, north of the Arctic Circle, includes
the Arctic Ocean, Greenland, Baffin Island, other smaller
northern islands, and the far northern parts of Europe,
Russia (Siberia), Alaska and Canada.
The Arctic Circle, incidentally, is an imaginary line
located at 66º, 30'N latitude, and as a guide defines the
southernmost part of the Arctic. The climate within the Circle
is very cold and much of the area is always covered with ice.
In the mid winter months, the sun never rises and

temperatures can easily reach lows of - 50º F in the higher
latitudes. In the summer months (further south), 24 hours of
sunlight a day melts the seas and topsoil, and is the main
cause of icebergs breaking off from the frozen north and
floating south, causing havoc in the shipping lanes of the
north Atlantic.
The primary residents of the Arctic include the Eskimos
(Inuits), Saami and Russians, with an overall population (of
all peoples) exceeding 2 million. The indigenous Eskimos
have lived in the area for over 9,000 years, and many have
now given up much of their traditional hunting and fishing to
work in the oil fields and the varied support villages.
The first explorers of the Arctic were Vikings. Norwegians Posters and Prints of the Polar Regions
visited the northern regions in the 9th century, and Erik the
Red (Icelander) established a settlement in Greenland in
982. In 1909, after numerous attempts by regional
explorers, Robert E. Peary reached the North Pole.

Manaus, Brazil, nearly 1,000 miles inland from the

Atlantic Ocean, is a modern city (literally) surrounded by
the Amazon rainforest.
Positioned at the confluence of the Negro and Solimoes

rivers, it's a hectic cosmopolitan area where the daily life
of its population revolves around those rivers, and the
hundreds of ferries that travel the local waters.
From its busy port (on ferries stuffed to the rafters),

animals, people and products of all description travel up
and down the rivers 24/7, and there is no other
choice....as conventional roads are few and far between.
In the 19th century fortunes were made in this part of

Brazil from rubber trees that grew (only) in the Amazon.
Manaus was ground-zero for those rubber barons, and
the city became known as the "Paris of the Tropics."
Remnants of that era remain today, with the city's
opulent Opera House its most famous symbol.
At sunset, this is a partial view of the downtown skyline of Manaus, Brazil.
This one of the city's many ferry docks, and a picture can't describe the
chaos each experiences when entire families, farm animals, products of all
description and other entities are put on board the ferry of choice. The stalls
in the middle of the dock sell food and refreshments, and some rent (and
sell) hammocks for overnight journeys on the river. There is no air
conditioning on the ferries, and in this very hot climate I was quick to
wonder how locals endure their journeys, as addicted to AC that I am.

Another look at the colorful ferries that cover the waterfront in Manaus.
Fishing is obviously a huge business in the Amazon Basin, and early morning
boats of all sizes come to Manaus to unload the overnight catch.
This is a typical city street in central Manaus where dozens of vendors and
countless locals fight for some personal space in this very crowded metro.

Many scale the fish right on their boat, before moving them to the street
above. A few fisherman sold their catch right from their boat.
Like all cities in South America, Catholic churches are dominant structures.
This is a small part of the beautiful "Catedral Metropolitana."
The Mercado Adolpho Lisboa (fish market) is a busy and smelly place. Fish
of all description (some unidentifiable by me) are quickly sold to locals, as
well as to grocery stores and restaurants. Based on the current conversion
rate, for $10, I could've had my fill of fish.

Here's another example of a classic 19th century Catholic church in Manaus.
And speaking of smelly, a wide variety of raw meat is commonly hung along
the street, or in open markets across South America. At first (early morning)
it seems to work, but trust me when I say that the mid-afternoon
experience (at least for me) was a hold-your-nose event.

These colonial buildings near the city's exciting waterfront are long
abandoned. To me, they look like false-front buildings used on Hollywood
movie sets.
On a side street near the opera house in Manaus, I noticed this second
story restaurant dripping in ambiance and I couldn't help but take a picture.
Inaugurated on December 31, 1896, Teatro Amazonas (a Renaissance-style

opera house) is a real treasure. Its cupola (above) was created using 36,000
ceramic tiles from the Alsace region of France, and you can see this
glittering dome from many parts of the city.

While photographing the roots of this unusual tree in the city center, I
hadn't noticed the two lovers on the bench to the left of the tree.
Gracing the city's waterfront, this is the world's (only) prefabricated Customs
House. Built in 1902, its stones were fashioned near London, England then
assembled in Manaus. Up close, behind all of the poles and electrical wires,
it's a beautiful structure.
This fountain caught my eye because of the marvelous sculptures at its

base.

depth is measured at 295 meters (965 ft).
Numerous rivers drain into the gulf from both Finland and Sweden. Most of the
northern areas freeze solid in winter, as its waters have less salinity than the
southern reaches of the Baltic Sea.
