INTRODUCTION
The Automobile industry in India is the seventh largest in
the world and one of the prime drivers of international
economic development and social improvement too.
The history of the automobile industry goes back to the
1900s, when the industry began to develop in France. But
it was only in the US that automobiles came of age, when
Henry Ford innovated the moving assembly line that
marked the birth of mass production in the 1920s.
The automobile industry had evolved continuously
with changing times from craft production in 1890s to
mass production in 1910s to lean production
techniques in the 1970s.
Company Wise Analysis
Maruti
Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL, formerly named
Maruti Udyog Limited) is a subsidiary of Suzuki
Motor Corporation, Japan.
Maruti Suzuki is one of India's leading automobile
manufacturers and the market leader in the car
segment, both in terms of volume of vehicles sold and
revenue earned.
The company annually exports more than 50,000 cars
and has an extremely large domestic market in India
selling over 730,000 cars annually.
Hyundai
The opening chapter of Hyundai Motor’s international
story began in 1974 with the unveiling of the Hyundai
Pony at the Turin Motor Show.
HMIL is the first automotive company in India to
achieve the export of 10 lakh cars in just over a decade.
The company first entered the export market in 1999,
with a shipment of 20 Hyundai Santro.
In March 2008 it crossed 5 lakh unit mark and become
the fastest Indian passenger car manufacturer to
achieve this stupendous milestone in record time.
Currently Hyundai enjoys a 66% market share in the
segment of passenger car export segment in India
TATA Motors
Indian manufacturers Tata Motors have quite the
history under their belt, starting with the company's
foundation in 1945 as a locomotive producer.
Tata got into the motoring business in 1954 when it
starting producing heavy trucks in a joint venture
with Daimler-Benz AG.
