of the world trade. Without shipping, the import and export of goods on the scale necessary for
the modern world would not be possible. There are over 50,000 merchant ships trading
internationally, transporting most kinds of cargo. The world fleet
is manned by over a million seafarers of virtually every
nationality. India is a large manpower supplier to the
international shipping industry especially in the officers
segment and is reputed for providing highly qualified and well
trained personnel to work on foreign owned merchant ships.
Expert opinion and statistical forecast suggests that Indian
Officers will continue to be in demand in the foreseeable future.

and own training institute at Navi Mumbai, India. FML employs
crew from 15 nationalities but, strategically FML is focused on
Indian crew (officers and ratings) and presently about 70% of its
crew come from India.

Currently, we manage more than 195 modern ships, owned by


the most reputable ship owners. The average age of our fleet is
around 10 years. We intend to recruit smart, young and
intelligent candidates who will be employed onboard our ships
after undergoing 12 months of pre-sea training ashore at
. . government approved training centers.

Pre-sea course leading to B.Sc. (Nautical Science) approved


by D.G. Shipping, Govt of India & IGNOU
This program is approved by Director General of Shipping,
Government of India. This training provides a (10+2) pass
out student a sure path to become a qualified Deck Officer.
On selection, you will undergo a 12 months residential
pre-sea training (semester 1, 2) at any of our chosen
maritime training institute in India.
At the pre-sea institute, apart from the academics you will
undergo practical training in seamanship, navigation, cargo
work, chart work, collision prevention, machine shop,
electrical shop and hot-work training.

On successful completion of the semester 1 & 2 you will be awarded a Diploma in Nautical
Science by Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU).

On completion of the pre-sea training of 12 months, you will undertake the sea phase training,
comprising of 18 months training as deck cadet on board
our ships. It is divided into 3 semesters, comprising of
semester 3, 4 & 5 of ship-board residential training along
with correspondence course from Indira Gandhi National
Open University (IGNOU).

On successful completion of Phase 2 (semester 3, 4 & 5)


IGNOU will award you with Advance Diploma in Nautical
Science. During the onboard training period of 18 months on our ships, you will be paid a stipend.

After obtaining Advance Diploma in Nautical Science, you will be required to undergo 4 months
of post-sea training. On successful completion of the training & passing the exam you will be
awarded second mates Certificate of Competency by Director General of Shipping and B.Sc.
degree in (Nautical Science) by IGNOU.

Eligibility:
Education : 10 + 2 with minimum 60% marks in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics or aggregate
& minimum 50% marks in English at 10 + 2 or in 10th Class. Should be fluent in written and
spoken English. We aim to induct students who have above average marks in their cohort.

It is compulsory for all the candidates to qualify IGNOU OPENNET examination, which will be
held in June 2009. The application form for this examination will be available in May 2009.

Age : Born after 01.08.1989

Medical fitness : Medically fit as per the company/ regulatory standards. Eyesight 6/6, without
visual aids and no color blindness. Speech deformity such as stammering, lisping or slurring
should not be present. Minimum height should be 5’4”. Candidate should not have any physical
handicap or contagious disease.

Fees:
Approximately Rs. 3,00,000/- including boarding and lodging, study materials, uniform etc.
Training cost is directly payable to the training institutes by the student.

Selection procedure:
Candidates will undergo written test, interview, medical test and psychometric test at our offices
located at Chennai, Delhi, Kochi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Patna & Vizag . Date of selection
procedure will be intimated to you. Selection criteria and selection procedure depends on
Director General of Shipping existing rules and can change anytime.

Subjects of examination:
I. General Knowledge
II. English
III. Physics
IV. Mathematics
V. Chemistry

Total examination time - 2.5 hours.

Objective type question paper for all the five subjects combined,
comprising of 100 marks. Use of calculator is permitted. Candidates,
successful in written test, will be called for psychometric evaluation,
interview, medical test and final selection. The Company will not
provide any lodging or boarding to the candidates attending selection
process. The successful candidates selected by the company will be

starting their pre-sea training on 01 August 2009.

Note: It takes about 12 years before you can expect to command a merchant ship in
international trade with a minimum sailing time of about 8 years.
