“The Case of the Misplaced Evening”

Exodus 12:6 gives very specific instructions when to kill the sacrificial
Passover Lamb. The lamb is to be kept UNTIL the 14th day, then killed
“between the evenings.” A careful study of “between the evenings,” will
reveal that it is the period between the setting of the sun and dark; the
twilight or dusk period of the day. The question is; which day? Since the
setting of the sun is “ba erev” and considered the change from one day
to the next in the sunset reckoning, “between the evenings” is the period
of twilight at the beginning of the new day. In this case the 14th day. If
“between the evenings” is the beginning of the day, what then is the end
of the day?
Exodus 12:18 gives us the example of the other end of the scriptural
day. Exo 12:18 In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month
at even, ye shall eat unleavened bread, until the one and twentieth day of
the month at even. This time-specific instruction defines the transition
between the 14th day and the 15th day in a sunset reckoned day, which
is the beginning of the 7 days of the Feast of Unleavened Bread.
